How to Write a Personal Statement for Purchasing, Materials, and Warehouse Roles

This blog post introduces effective methods for writing a personal statement when applying for purchasing, materials, or warehouse roles, along with specific experiences.

My Success Story

I served as a cook in the Air Force. The role of a cook involved not only preparing food but also encompassed a wide range of responsibilities, including the transportation of ingredients and warehouse management. During my service, I encountered several instances where issues arose with warehouse management or the transportation of supplies. Sometimes, transportation delays meant necessary supplies didn’t arrive on time. Conversely, inadequate warehouse management led to vegetables and other ingredients spoiling. Through these experiences, I naturally came to understand the critical importance of warehouse management and transportation. From that point on, I began deeply contemplating how to efficiently manage food supplies and optimize warehouse space.
After much such contemplation, there was one day when the warehouse was nearly full, yet we had to serve military dumplings as the meal. Looking at the condition of the remaining vegetables in the warehouse, I realized that serving only the dumplings would likely mean discarding the vegetables. I didn’t want to let this situation pass. After much thought, an idea came to me. I chopped the leftover vegetables finely, mixed them with the dumplings along with a spicy sauce, and created a new menu item called ‘Bibim Mandu’ (Spicy Mixed Dumplings) to serve. The response was far more enthusiastic than expected, and many soldiers showed an explosive positive reaction, likely because it tasted good. Most importantly, we were able to properly use up the vegetables piled in the warehouse. Since we used everything before it spoiled, we avoided wasting any ingredients and also freed up warehouse space.
I later heard that if we hadn’t consumed those vegetables that day, the warehouse space shortage would have prevented us from storing incoming supplies. This experience made me keenly aware, beyond just preparing food, of the critical importance of overall logistics flow and space utilization. Ultimately, a single menu item could positively impact more than just meal provision—it could even resolve bottlenecks in the logistics flow.
This experience provided me with strong motivation, and after my military discharge, I began studying logistics and transportation in earnest. As a result, I obtained the Level 1 Trade English and Level 2 Distribution Management certifications, and I am currently challenging myself to earn the Origin Management certification. The more I studied, the more I realized that the world of logistics is a complex field, far beyond simply moving goods, involving an intricate web of industrial structures and systems.
Throughout my studies, the company that always stood out in my mind was undoubtedly CJ GLS. As the first in Korea to introduce the WMS system to transportation, I believe CJ GLS is a company that has led unparalleled innovation in the Korean logistics industry. For me, CJ GLS is not just a company; it represents an ideal and a goal within the logistics field. I believe my sociability, communication skills, and passion and knowledge about the logistics industry as a whole can serve as a stepping stone for CJ GLS. With someone like me joining, CJ GLS can gain a competitive edge, take another step forward, and grow into Asia’s premier logistics company.

Extracurricular Activities and Achievements

During my first summer break after entering university, I worked part-time at a glass factory to help ease my parents’ burden of tuition fees. The company I worked for was ○○ Glass Co., Ltd., which manufactured industrial glass for overseas delivery. I still vividly remember those days of waking up at 4 a.m. daily, climbing into the back of a truck, and commuting to work. Physically, it was quite demanding, but at the same time, the vague thought that ‘I am doing something significant right now’ made my heart race.
My assigned task involved vacuum-packing glass weighing up to 15 tons and then loading it into the warehouse. Factory work was completely new to me and felt unfamiliar. More than anything, most tasks were done in teams, so if the team members weren’t perfectly in sync, it was difficult to even meet the daily quota. In the beginning, with no prior knowledge, I made frequent mistakes and was often scolded by my seniors. One day, while moving over two tons of tempered glass, I accidentally broke it. As I faced my seniors’ criticism, I felt a wave of doubt: ‘Do I really have to do this kind of work?’
But I quickly decided to change my mindset. ‘Since I’ve already messed up, I might as well see this through to the end. I’ll take full responsibility for the glass I broke and learn this job through hands-on experience.” From that day on, I didn’t hesitate to ask seniors when I had questions. I started actively brainstorming ideas on how to improve packaging efficiency. As time passed, I gradually began to understand the factory’s workflow, and the team’s coordination naturally improved. When my proposed change to the packaging workflow was actually implemented on the shop floor thanks to my seniors’ recommendation, I felt an indescribable sense of pride. That idea wasn’t just a simple suggestion; it was recognized as a practical solution that improved on-site efficiency.
By the time the job was finished, the teamwork had improved beyond comparison to the beginning, and I had grown into a team member working in perfect sync with my seniors. Through this experience, I believe I gained a valuable opportunity to develop practical skills in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, rather than just performing physical labor. The vivid, hands-on reality of the workplace taught me far more than any book ever could. And even now, I never forget that ‘teamwork’ is the core element that determines the true value of any organization.
