In this blog post, I will explore how my personal experiences sparked an interest in healthcare policies for the elderly and evolved into choosing nursing as my major. I will also outline the values and career direction revealed throughout this process.
Reasons for Choosing My Major
Having spent my childhood with my grandmother, I grew up as a particularly devoted granddaughter who still calls her every weekend. However, at some point, the thought of calling her began to fill me with worry. This was because, as she aged, she developed more health issues. Living alone in the countryside, she often struggled to visit the hospital by herself when she felt unwell. Whenever this happened, my father would bring her home, or my mother or I would visit and care for her. As these situations became more frequent, I developed an interest in healthcare policies for the elderly and nursing. This interest evolved into a dream: to create and implement healthcare policies for the elderly. To realize my dream, I believe I need extensive knowledge of healthcare and nursing policy, along with nursing experience. I am confident that your university’s nursing department, with its outstanding faculty and comprehensive curriculum, will provide me with the high-level knowledge and experience I need. This conviction led me to apply.
Academic Plan and Goals
I believe every endeavor begins with a crucial first step. Simply gaining admission to your university would already be an excellent start for me. Having been granted this valuable opportunity, I plan to diligently and methodically complete your educational program. During my first year, I will focus above all on building a solid foundation in my major subjects. I firmly believe that a strong foundation is essential for progressing to the next stage. Starting in my second year, I will engage in advanced study of my major subjects. I will strive to thoroughly master knowledge in Community Health Nursing and Geriatric Health Nursing. Additionally, I will concurrently study healthcare and nursing policy to pursue my dream. I plan to research and analyze healthcare policies to identify areas for improvement and directions for development.
From my third year onward, I will focus intensely on the increasing number of practical training sessions. Through practical training that provides real-world experience, I believe both my weaknesses and strengths will become apparent. I will dedicate my full effort to address my weaknesses and maximize my strengths, ensuring progressive growth. In my fourth year, I plan to focus intensely on thesis research, leveraging all the experience and knowledge gained throughout my university years. I will invest significant time filling the necessary gaps to write a thesis related to healthcare and nursing policy.
Post-Graduation Plans
My ultimate goal is to create and implement essential healthcare policies. To achieve this, I believe it is necessary to study social welfare systems and nursing policy more professionally and gain practical experience. Therefore, after graduating from university, I plan to pursue two paths concurrently. I will enroll in graduate school to dedicate myself to in-depth policy-related research and work under the Ministry of Health and Welfare to gain firsthand experience of the necessity of welfare and policy. Additionally, I plan to volunteer in diverse ways wherever I am needed. Through extensive social engagement, I aim to build networks with like-minded individuals to expand possibilities. Through consistent research and action, I will develop the capability to create and implement policies, ensuring the provision of essential medical services to the public.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
I often imagine the moment when the policies I envision become reality. Though my knowledge of healthcare policy is still limited, the alternatives I propose are simple and modest. For now, my hope is something as straightforward as assigning medical personnel to local community centers to regularly visit elderly individuals with mobility issues. Yet, I firmly believe that if even this modest vision becomes reality, it will save and help countless people.
Of course, right now, it’s literally just a dream. But I believe no miracle ever began without a dream. If I enroll in your university’s nursing department and dedicate myself fully to my studies as planned, I believe I can achieve this dream. Dreams make challenges possible, and challenges bring us one step closer to success. Through consistent effort and unwavering will, I will absolutely make my dream a reality.
