This blog post explores how the aspiration to interpret economic indicators and understand societal changes became the core motivation for choosing economics as a major. We trace how an interest sparked by a single book expanded into academic goals and future research directions.
Motivation for Further Education (Reason for Choosing Major)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading a book titled Freakonomics during middle school. While economics often conjures images of abstruse theories and complex formulas, this book was intriguing right from its title. The author, a former professor, explained various economic theories in an accessible, entertaining, and sometimes offbeat way through diverse social phenomena. Regardless of the content, I found it genuinely enjoyable and gained a taste of the pleasure economics can offer.
I wish to study economics in depth. This is because economics is one of the most fundamental driving forces shaping modern society. While economic phenomena are difficult to predict in a world governed by complex and diverse variables, I aspire to interpret the world’s major and minor indicators, communicate them to society, and guide positive change.
To achieve this, I first wish to enroll at your esteemed institution to study the most fundamental ‘economics’ in depth. Furthermore, I aspire to pursue economics on a global scale at universities and graduate schools in the United States and Japan. Throughout this journey, I aim to gradually build an extensive economic network spanning the entire world. This is because applying academic knowledge to the world requires not just my individual efforts, but the collaborative insights of numerous pioneering scholars to analyze the diverse facets of our world with depth.
Academic Plan and Goals
Upon admission to your university, I will strive to cultivate the fundamental skills and competencies required to become a professional equipped with economic analytical skills, rational judgment, and competitive work capabilities. By comprehensively studying both theoretical and applied economics, I will study to gain a balanced perspective on understanding economic phenomena and practicality in real-world application. I will join an economics research club to engage in activities involving in-depth research and discussion of current affairs and economic issues. Beyond economics, I will choose accounting as a minor to gain opportunities for broad intellectual experience. During my undergraduate years, I will focus on comprehensively understanding socio-economic phenomena, aiming to pursue work after graduation that allows me to apply my academic expertise.
Post-Graduation Plans
As society grows increasingly complex and expansive, the scope and content of economic activities broaden, leading to a rising demand for specialized economic researchers who seek rational solutions to the diverse economic and social problems this creates. In response to this societal need, I aspire to become an economic researcher who maintains a constant interest in concrete societal problems, logically analyzes them, and seeks solutions.
To achieve this, after graduating from your university, I wish to earn a Master’s and Doctorate in Economics from UCL, a world-renowned economics institution. My goal is to become a top-tier economic researcher capable of grasping the underlying principles driving various economic phenomena that significantly impact human life, understanding complex economic problems, and devising solutions for them.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
My mother taught me to embrace a mindset where I can challenge anything I’m passionate about. When I was deeply engrossed in drawing historical comics as an elementary school student, she once took me by the hand to a small local publishing house. There, she meticulously asked questions, ranging from evaluations of my comics to the methods for a cartoonist to publish their work.
Through this, my mother taught me that dreams aren’t just something you hope for passively; they require actively moving your body and mind toward them. Influenced by her, I maintain an attitude of confidently tackling anything with a positive mindset. My passion for diverse fields and the perspectives gained through them will foster deeper insight, and that insight will create new power to see the world.
Though I still have much to learn in any field, I will strive forward with all my strength to cultivate the power to see the world.
