How can I write a compelling motivation statement for pursuing a degree in multimedia?

This blog post provides specific writing strategies on how to effectively connect your personal experiences and interests to your motivation for pursuing a degree in multimedia, based on its artistic and technical characteristics.

Reasons for Choosing a Major

I believe the advancement of multimedia enables revolutionary progress that breaks down the boundaries of time and space. The transformation brought about by social media (SNS) serves as a prime example. With the rise of SNS, anyone can communicate with people worldwide whenever they choose, and it has become possible to instantly check the current situation ‘right now’ in ‘that place’. In the 21st century, I believe ‘multimedia’ is not merely an academic field confined to information or technology, but a discipline possessing the power to dominate the world and culture.
Furthermore, I am convinced multimedia will soon exert a dominant influence even in the artistic realm. This is because multimedia is already making the incredible possible: anyone can become a director using videos shot and edited on a smartphone, and one can become an internet writer without needing to be formally published.
I possess a deep passion for music, evidenced by my involvement in a band during high school. I vividly recall the fresh shock I felt while arranging music during band activities, realizing that beautiful melodies could be created using cold machinery. This experience sparked my interest in exploring the fusion of music and multimedia. While I haven’t yet received specialized training, I don’t fully grasp the specific synergistic effects this combination of art and multimedia could produce. It is with the goal of exploring and implementing this specific process that I am applying to your university’s Multimedia Department.

Academic Plan and Goals

I believe university is a space where the spontaneity of chosen individuals is perfected into dreams. Armed with my proactive personality that fears no challenge, I will realize the completion of my dreams through my university life. However, recognizing that will without a plan often leads to failure without results, I have formulated the following academic plan.
First, during my freshman and sophomore years, I will focus on building the foundation necessary to understand major courses. I believe ‘multimedia’ is, above all, a field where the crucial question is what A meets what B. Consequently, developing a perspective that considers the application and variation of knowledge from multiple angles will be an essential quality. Without a solid foundation, progressive application is impossible, so I will dedicate my full effort to grasping fundamental principles. I believe this journey will likely begin by understanding the principles of vast and diverse computer systems.
By my third and fourth years, I will immerse myself in advanced studies within my major. Specifically, I aim to build my own dataset by analyzing results and documenting possibilities through simulations that combine A and B. Through appropriate club activities, I will channel my passion for music and explore excellent multimedia approaches to engage with it. I also wish to participate in the diverse social activities available at university, actively interacting with experts across many fields to expand my social network. I believe communication with diverse people will play a crucial role in fulfilling the academic task of multimedia: exploring the means and outcomes of mass communication.

Post-Graduation Plans

I am keeping my options open regarding plans after graduating from university. As a student still preparing for college entrance, it is difficult to predict the professional achievements or career success within the field of multimedia. However, I am confident that multimedia will lead the culture and arts of the 21st century. As a multimedia scholar, my ultimate goal is to create positive synergy through the fusion of art and multimedia.
Just as one can become an internet writer without formal publishing processes, my first goal is to develop accessible composition systems—like word processors—enabling the emergence of internet musicians. Building on a diligent university life, I will infinitely expand my potential and dedicate my full efforts to becoming a professional who advances multimedia’s development to directly influence popular culture and arts.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

I reflect on how profoundly blessed it is to have someone worthy of respect in life. Having such a figure means possessing a mentor to emulate. I believe this role guides one back to the right path whenever they waver. Thankfully, my father is that person of respect for me. Though he has since passed away, he profoundly shaped my character and formed my tastes. His words, “Challenge rather than hesitate,” nurtured me into an active and courageous person. My choice to pursue music as my passion and love was also heavily influenced by him. In my father’s study, a music lover’s sanctuary, music flowed freely—from classical to jazz to popular songs, transcending genres and nationalities. The little boy who first listened to music on my father’s LP records has grown into an adult who listens to music on MP3, dreaming of the dazzling fusion of art and multimedia. Since this is a challenge in a specialized field I never studied until high school, I do feel some apprehension. But as always, I will choose to challenge rather than hesitate, forging my future with a proactive attitude.
