Reason for Pursuing Art (Why I Chose This Major)
My mother was a piano teacher, so I learned piano from a young age. Though I played piano for over a decade, I strongly felt that music required mastering something someone else had created through technically repetitive practice. My desire for art, which I first felt at an art academy I visited with a friend as a child, continued to grow stronger than my interest in music. However, I couldn’t pursue art due to my mother’s opposition, as she dreamed of me becoming a pianist. Then, while deeply moved by an exhibition titled ‘Painters of the Bauhaus,’ I decided to choose art at the crossroads between music and painting. Having chosen art over music, which I had pursued for so long, I was determined to commit everything and give it my all. Your teaching approach resonated powerfully with me. I understand that while the undergraduate program is rigorous enough that one might drop out without effort, it hones the foundation necessary to live as an artist. Compared to friends who have studied art for much longer, I undoubtedly have shortcomings. However, I believe my untarnished potential could be my strength. Furthermore, having started late, your school, which can forge me into a resilient artist, is crucial for me.
Academic Plan and Goals
First, I intend to build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of art. After all, compared to friends who have been drawing for a long time, I will likely be lacking in technical skills. While strengthening my fundamentals, I also want to achieve a level of immersion I haven’t experienced before. During my school years, my mother’s opposition made it difficult for me to draw. Therefore, I plan to dedicate time solely to immersing myself in my work. Furthermore, I intend to dedicate myself to language study to ensure smooth communication about my work when I become an artist or designer.
Since my goal is to connect with others through my art, I will enhance my language skills as a means to communicate with more people. Art that cannot connect with others is meaningless. Of course, art gives me the joy of freely expressing myself. However, if that were merely a solitary pleasure, I probably wouldn’t need to consider becoming an artist or designer. I want to breathe together with many people through art.
Plans After Graduation
I want to exhibit my work in a small gallery in Insadong or on the streets. If possible, I want to meet people through channels that are easily accessible without burden. This is because my first goal is to share what I feel with many people. Additionally, as time permits, I plan to travel to many regions around the world. Since art is another language that transcends words, I want to experience communicating with people from other countries through painting. Acquiring language skills is also part of my academic plan, so after graduation, I intend to engage in more exchanges with artists from different cultural backgrounds. In today’s increasingly globalized world, I believe interacting with people from other cultures is crucial. My plan is to create, albeit modestly, a platform for interacting with people worldwide as a stepping stone to connect with more people, gradually expanding it.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
I believe the process of creation is just as important as the final result. That’s why I don’t stubbornly paint solely for completion. Rushing just to produce a result often lacks sincerity. I believe people can recognize sincerity and dedication. Even if it isn’t immediately apparent, I think such authenticity will eventually resonate. The reason works by artists from long ago gain recognition, even belatedly, is because people empathize with the artist’s heart through the work. That’s why I strive to paint pictures that are simple yet sincere.
Before focusing on outward appearances or listening to others’ evaluations, I believe the effort and heart that I can acknowledge within myself are what truly matter.
Perhaps that is the fundamental attitude for living as an artist. When everyone rushes by shouting “Quickly!” and fails to see, when we gradually forget things while living in disguise, I believe it is the artist who enables us to see those things. And I believe the most important thing for such an artist is affection for people and sincerity.
