This blog post examines what expertise and capabilities aspiring PD applicants should highlight in their academic plans. We outline key elements to enhance persuasiveness, from understanding their major to production experience and content analysis skills.
Motivation for Pursuing Higher Education (Reason for Choosing Major)
During middle school, I developed a deep admiration for the profession of PD after watching the works of PD ○○○, a cultural documentary producer who garnered attention by winning various international awards. To my younger self, a PD was simply a glamorous image and a vague fantasy. However, as I contemplated high school choices, I began to realize that achieving this dream required clear expertise, a meticulous perspective, a sense of social responsibility, and other essential qualities. I concluded that enrolling in the Broadcasting and Film Department would provide the systematic academic foundation needed to pursue the path of the PD who was my childhood idol. It was with this excitement that I chose this department.
During my first and second years of high school, I participated in the broadcasting club, producing videos for the school’s broadcasting festival and taking charge of directing and filming. Through these activities, I met several alumni, including ○○○, a current MBC PD, and gained valuable interview experience. This further solidified my aspirations. Among my favorite programs is the documentary ○○○. This show conveys to viewers the will and hope to pioneer the future through a perspective that reflects on history. If I pursue the path of a PD after graduating from your university, I aspire to direct outstanding documentary programs that similarly leave a lasting impression and chronicle the era.
Academic Plan and Goals
Should I be admitted to your university, I intend to first deeply explore my major studies and diligently build the foundational skills necessary to become a PD. Based on my major knowledge, I will consistently read books in related fields to understand social phenomena and issues from multiple angles. I will also diligently clip current affairs news and professional journals to grasp the changing media environment and industry trends. I am well aware that the broadcasting and video industry is rapidly changing due to the proliferation of OTT platforms and the advancement of digital production technology, making continuous learning to understand this environment even more crucial.
In my sophomore year, I plan to go on a language study abroad program to improve my language skills, effectively strengthening my English ability while interacting with university students from around the world. In my junior year, I will choose psychology as a minor to develop the ability to understand and analyze viewers’ emotions and reactions. This will form a strong foundation for enhancing content quality. Subsequently, in my fourth year, I plan to systematically receive practical production training at a broadcasting academy to become a PD. Additionally, I will diligently fill my undergraduate years by continuously building broad cultural literacy and current affairs knowledge through newspapers and books, and practicing viewing diverse social phenomena—including culture and music—through a PD’s perspective.
Post-Graduation Plans
After graduation, I aim to join a broadcasting station and grow as a producer of current affairs documentaries. While the joy provided by entertainment programs certainly has its value, I feel the world I wish to depict is better suited to the format of current affairs documentaries—programs that observe society with a deeper perspective and earnestly record and convey people’s lives. As a station producer, I aspire to create meaningful programs that capture humanity and the value of community.
Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, honed himself relentlessly as a master tailor in his youth before ultimately becoming a great statesman. This story illustrates a truth: it is not one’s current or future position that matters most, but the principle that those who give their all to their present work will eventually reach their desired goals. I believe that by giving my utmost where I stand now, I too can one day reach the pinnacle in my chosen field. Deep within my heart lies the dream of becoming Korea’s top producer, and this dream serves as a powerful driving force that makes me envision what I will be like 20 years from now.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
I want the name ‘○○○’ to be remembered with a distinct color in any group I belong to. I believe that if someone is recognized as indispensable while present but forgotten without a trace after leaving, their social presence has not been fully realized. Therefore, I aim to clearly express my unique color and way of thinking in my workplace and relationships, so that I am remembered not only where I stayed but also where I left. The desire to be regarded as the best in my field stems from the same mindset.
An unpolished diamond is merely a hard stone, similar in composition to a pencil lead. Yet, after hundreds of polishing sessions, it becomes a jewel among jewels, radiating dazzling brilliance. I believe the same applies to people. No matter how favorable one’s birth circumstances may be, without consistent self-polishing, one remains stuck at an ordinary level. Conversely, anyone who dedicates themselves to relentless effort can become a shining presence. I am still merely a freshly mined gemstone, but I will diligently strive to become a talent capable of radiating the brightest light through continuous refinement. If I never lose this attitude and mindset, I believe the future I envision will also shine ever more firmly.
