How can a biotechnology academic plan demonstrate a sense of responsibility as a researcher?

This blog post explores how to express a researcher’s sense of responsibility in a biotechnology academic plan.

Reasons for Pursuing the Major

I loved futuristic science fiction films, often called SF. Stories of adventures transcending time and space via time machines or tales of future societies with human cloning capabilities always filled me with immense excitement. It was an excitement born from knowing such things could never happen in reality. Then, I learned about the cloned sheep Dolly through the news and was profoundly shocked. The fact that scientific progress had realized the cloning of life, something that had long existed only in humanity’s imagination, felt truly wondrous. That event planted the thought “If you dream it, nothing is impossible” deep within my heart, nurturing my dream of becoming a biotechnology student.
While the reality of lacking research personnel and support compared to developed countries is regrettable, it also allowed me to harbor the grand ambition of making Korea’s biotechnology the best in the world. However, I must admit I felt uncertain about the specific steps needed to realize this grand ambition. While searching for a way to set sail toward my dream, I learned about the College of Biotechnology at your university (○○ University). Without a moment’s hesitation, I applied. The educational curriculum in biotechnology at ○○ University is systematic and progressive, truly befitting its reputation as Korea’s premier institution. Above all, the selection for the BK21 Project demonstrated the national-level research support available, confirming the potential of ○○ University.

Academic Plan and Goals

University life, where I take my first steps toward my dreams, will undoubtedly be a crucial period in my life. Therefore, I believe thorough planning and firm resolve are absolutely essential. To ensure a successful university experience, I have outlined the following academic plan.
First, during my freshman and sophomore years, I will diligently complete the foundational curriculum to ensure I can tackle advanced major courses without difficulty. By earnestly completing these core subjects, I believe I will naturally discover diverse possibilities for my future as a biotechnologist. Furthermore, as biotechnology is an advanced technology growing alongside the world, I consider specialized foreign language skills and a broad mindset essential. I aim to achieve a TOEIC score of ○○ and a TOEFL score of ○○, steadily building my foreign language proficiency. My ideal foreign language ability involves grasping the cultural and societal implications embedded within the language.
I plan to attend a language study program abroad before entering my third year. I believe that directly experiencing the society and culture of another country through this program will help me achieve the foreign language proficiency I desire and greatly contribute to broadening my horizons.
During my junior and senior years, I will pursue in-depth learning in my major field, building upon the theories and experiences I have acquired thus far. If possible, I would like to focus on directly analyzing and understanding published research data through extensive experimentation.

Post-Graduation Plans

After graduating from university, I plan to enroll in the Graduate School of Biotechnology at ○○ University to dedicate myself to the theory and research of more specialized fields. Having nurtured my dream as a biotechnology student after seeing the cloned sheep Dolly, I hold a deep interest in genetic engineering. I will devote myself entirely to research in genetic engineering, striving to produce research achievements that will capture the world’s attention.
My primary goal will be to complete my master’s and doctoral programs with high-level research achievements. Regarding future plans, I intend to keep various possibilities open and carefully consider them. While I have a desire to conduct diverse research with biotechnologists from around the world at foreign universities, I also believe it is extremely meaningful to advance our nation’s technological level, teach outstanding talent, and dedicate myself to nurturing the next generation.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

I firmly believe that scientists capable of transforming human life through cutting-edge technological research must possess a profound sense of responsibility and professional mission. I believe that reckless experimentation or theoretical development based on unverified results can endanger humanity. I believe that outstanding scientists should not be judged solely by their achievements but also distinguished by strict moral standards and mature character. As a biotechnologist, the academic achievements I pursue are ultimately altruistic. I will dedicate myself to scholarship with an unblemished, upright mindset, not for personal satisfaction, but to conduct research that contributes to humanity’s progress.
