Writing About Academic Experience and Reflections
During high school, I enrolled in computer classes as an after-school program. While most friends opted for supplementary lessons in core subjects, I prioritized my interests and confidently chose computer classes. The computer lab was always quiet, with only about fifteen students from the entire school gathering to study together. The classes covered diverse topics, from using design software to programming techniques and the JavaScript language. The goal was to gain the skills to create video works or websites by the end of the course.
We primarily worked with design programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint, and also learned editing software. Learning Illustrator especially made me realize it enabled much more intricate and detailed work than what I could achieve with Photoshop. Afterwards, I became engrossed in illustration work, continuing various exercises like creating character images or designing website layouts myself. During this process, I experienced classes that fused art and computers. The instructor showed us famous paintings or artworks and assigned tasks to reinterpret them as illustration images or transform them into pop art styles. I developed my creative expression by simplifying masterpieces like those by Van Gogh and Chagall, then creating parody images with new characters and backgrounds.
In programming class, I challenged myself with video and game software production. During video production, I learned various editing techniques and used editing design software to create scenes myself. I gained experience naturally blending artistic sensibility with computer skills, producing works ranging from short films combining images and narratives to documentary-style videos featuring characters and stories. During game software development, I created a quiz-based product incorporating historical knowledge and figures related to art history or music history. This allowed me to build artistic literacy while also feeling a sense of accomplishment from communicating with others through a medium I created myself.
This interdisciplinary course, merging computers and art, was a valuable experience that went beyond mere technical skill acquisition, fostering creativity and expressive ability. It allowed me to deeply explore my areas of interest, feel a sense of personal accomplishment, and gain firsthand experience in how computer technology, when combined with various artistic fields, can create new value. This experience solidified my resolve to continue cultivating a broader perspective and enhanced capabilities through such interdisciplinary approaches.
Writing about major school activities and reflections
During my second semester of freshman year in high school, I joined the school’s advertising content production club. While most students typically start club activities in their first semester of freshman year, I joined later when an opportunity arose to recruit new members. At the time, our school’s advertising club was large with many members, so each member’s role was very clearly defined. Accordingly, applicants were selected through auditions, and I challenged myself in the advertising editing field. Within the club, there were various roles such as advertising planning, copywriting, video shooting, and editing, and I was assigned to editing.
I applied for the editing field because I was confident in my ability to use computer programs. Specifically, I was proficient in design and editing software, and I wanted to contribute to advertising editing work based on this skill. During the audition, we had to submit an advertising poster we edited ourselves. I created and submitted a public service announcement using illustration to reflect an idea I had planned. This work received a positive response, and I was praised by the senior conducting the audition for my planning skills and ideas. This evaluation gave me great strength and allowed me to engage even more actively in club activities.
What suited me well about our club activities was the direction of the advertising production. We primarily preferred video media advertising, especially formats like television commercials, over print ads. To achieve this, we had members skilled in filming techniques and video technology. The themes for our media ads also frequently featured public service and educational content well-suited for students. I always strived to generate diverse ideas fitting these themes. Particularly for an environmental contest hosted by the school, I actively participated in planning meetings, focusing on discovering creative ideas. Although my primary role was final editing and design, the fact that all members participated from the planning stage and freely proposed their ideas created an atmosphere that made the work even more meaningful.
Our goal was to win the contest and represent our school at external competitions. To achieve this, we employed various brainstorming methods to derive meaningful ideas. To make the environmental ad more creative, I personally researched and studied information on environmental issues and solutions at the library. I shared this knowledge during meetings, helping ideas develop on a solid foundation. After much brainstorming together, we produced an ad video conveying the message ‘Reduce the use of non-biodegradable materials’ by parodying a popular drama. This video received the most votes in a school website poll and was selected as the grand prize winner. It was a result born from the convergence of many people’s opinions on both the theme and content.
Above all, what was particularly meaningful to me was the process of staying up all night editing the video and going through multiple rounds of checks. Since my role in final editing and design determined the project’s quality, it became a precious experience that gave me great personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Through this activity, I developed not only technical skills but also teamwork, planning abilities, and a sense of responsibility, while deepening my interest in environmental issues. Moving forward, I aim to build on this experience to pursue creative endeavors and responsible activities across diverse fields.
Cases of Consideration, Sharing, and Cooperation and Reflections
Planning a Sharing Market for the Class
It was the sweltering summer of my senior year of high school, a time when everyone was busy preparing for college entrance exams. The weather grew increasingly hot, and despite the large number of people gathered in the classroom, the air conditioner wasn’t functioning properly, causing us great difficulty. We raised the air conditioner issue with the school administration multiple times, but it only operated at relatively high temperatures, leaving our class to endure an uncomfortable environment throughout the summer. Ultimately, this problem became a major agenda item at a class meeting, and we discussed how to resolve it together. Among the various suggestions, many proposed that each of us contribute money to install a new air conditioner. However, I suggested a way for us to raise the funds ourselves rather than asking our parents for help.
My proposed method was a ‘sharing market’ activity. The idea was to bring unused items or products in good condition from home and sell them to friends in other classes to generate profit. I suggested holding the flea market on weekends if possible, even outside our school grounds. Since it was a sharing market, we would sell items at low prices and gain a sense of fulfillment through our labor. My idea received more support than expected and was actually put into practice. Despite busy study schedules, many classmates enthusiastically participated in the sales activity, driven by their passion to solve the air conditioner problem. A variety of useful items, like clothing and shoes, gathered at the market.
What we practiced was the ‘sharing economy’. It was an attempt to directly experience the meaning of sharing and circulation, concepts we learned in social studies class, in real life. When the quality of items to sell was lacking, skilled friends repaired or remodeled them themselves to increase their value, and everyone worked together to maximize sales revenue. Thanks to this cooperation, we raised the targeted funds within a month and a half. Though the amount wasn’t huge, we successfully secured enough to install a new air conditioner. This experience not only improved our living environment but also provided valuable social experience through sales activities. Most importantly, seeing my proposed idea become reality greatly boosted my pride in my creativity and execution skills.
Through planning and executing this sharing market, I rediscovered the power of cooperation and the importance of a sharing heart. I truly felt the value of consideration and collaboration in the process of achieving something that would have been difficult alone, but was accomplished by everyone joining forces. Moving forward, I aim to build on this experience to practice a life of growth and sharing with more people. Through this writing, I also want to convey to many how even small acts of sharing and cooperation can create significant change.
