In this blog post, I will provide a sample personal statement for submission to the Department of Social Studies Education at Gongju National University of Education, along with answers to each question.
Academic Efforts and Learning Experiences
Growing up under the guidance of my father, a soldier, I have always placed great importance on patriotism toward Korea. Because of my strong sense of patriotism, I believed it was essential to gain a deep understanding of Korean history, which naturally led me to take an interest in the social studies curriculum as a whole and resulted in improved grades. In particular, I sought to understand Korean history not through simple memorization, but by focusing on historical trends and their underlying rationale. I made an effort to grasp the reasons behind policies, the background of wars, and the causes of the unification or division of the Three Kingdoms within the context of the realities and key figures of the time. As a result, I naturally came to feel the flow of history, and the events themselves left a lasting impression on me. Believing that a deep understanding of Korean history helps in comprehending contemporary society and interpreting the trends of our times, I studied with an even greater sense of responsibility.
By studying Korean history with a focus on understanding, I realized that I could achieve better results in other subjects as well by approaching them with passion, rather than relying solely on rote memorization and problem-solving. By grasping the flow of history based on understanding rather than rote memorization and digesting the material, one can better prepare for open-ended and essay-style questions. It was only when I could explain what I had learned in my own words that I truly realized, “This is what real learning is all about,” and I believe it is a teacher’s role to guide my juniors and future students so they, too, can experience the joy of this kind of learning.
Meaningful Extracurricular Activities (Dance Club, Mentoring)
As a member of the school dance club, I have experience performing on various stages. I joined through an audition during my freshman year and performed at festivals and volunteer events, receiving positive feedback from both children and the elderly. Since I’ve loved performing on stage since I was young, my high school dance activities held great significance beyond just academics. Especially when performing K-pop cover dances, receiving a warm response motivated me to work even harder to create better performances in return. Standing on stage requires confidence and passion for the field, as well as sufficient skill and practice. Whenever a performance was scheduled, I carved out time to practice, and when I felt I hadn’t practiced enough, I even cut back on sleep to prepare. Regardless of my grades, it was an activity I enjoyed on my own terms, and I found great fulfillment in the experience of pouring my passion into it and seeing results. I intend to continue these activities during my college years as well, aiming to grow into a positive and passionate person.
I also actively participated in our school’s mentoring program to help underclassmen adjust and succeed academically. Since the advice I received from upperclassmen was a huge help in my own adjustment, I wanted to be that same support for them. In particular, with one underclassman who was struggling to adjust to high school life, rather than simply telling them, “Do it this way,” I chose to listen to their story, show empathy, and encourage them. What that student needed was the trust and courage that comes from knowing someone believed in them, and once I took on that role, they were able to adapt on their own. Through this experience, I learned that helping others requires thoughtfulness and the ability to build trust.
Examples of Consideration, Sharing, Cooperation, and Conflict Management
I tend not to stand idly by when I see injustice; I strive to resolve it. During my time at school, A—who was usually quiet and introverted—was once named a suspect in a class fund embezzlement case. On the surface, their relationship with B, whom they were often seen with, appeared to be one of dominance and submission, and I found it strange that A confessed so readily. I investigated the time when the class funds went missing and the students who were still in the classroom at that time. Thanks to a witness from another class, it was confirmed that B had been entering and leaving the classroom during that time.
I encouraged A to tell the truth, and A eventually confessed that B had been bullying him by holding a family secret over him, and that B was actually the one who had stolen the class funds. I reassured A that we would not turn a blind eye to the situation. I reported the incident to the teacher and, presenting the evidence, helped establish that B was the culprit. I demanded a sincere apology from B, and, encouraged by my support, A also found the courage to demand an apology and restitution. Ultimately, B apologized, and A was able to restore their reputation. Through this experience, I realized that righting wrongs can alleviate the anxiety and pain of many people.
Why Gongju National University of Education Should Select Me
I am someone who strives to address problems wisely with a sense of justice. I have never tolerated injustice and have always worked to set things right; drawing on my humanities background and knowledge, I will continue to develop myself to become an exemplary member of society. This attitude and these goals also reflect my determination to embody the qualities required of an elementary school teacher. I believe it is crucial to go beyond simply imparting knowledge and instead provide an education that justly guides students’ character and civic-mindedness.
Elementary school students experience society for the first time at school and begin to learn how to live together. At this starting point, instilling just values and civic awareness is a vital duty of a teacher. Because I understand the significance of realizing just values, I am confident that I can fully fulfill this calling.
Furthermore, driven by my patriotism, I have studied Korean history in depth and will continue to do so. My passion for Korean history serves as the driving force behind my deep study and provides the foundation for teaching students the fundamentals of social studies and history with diligence and enthusiasm. A deep understanding of society, fostered through patriotism, is an essential foundation for helping students grow into outstanding citizens. Therefore, I will build my academic and teaching competencies at the Department of Social Studies Education at Gongju National University of Education and do my very best as an elementary school social studies teacher.
