What Do HR Managers in the Shipbuilding and Steel Industries Really Look for in Resumes?

This blog post examines the elements HR managers in the shipbuilding and steel industries actually prioritize in resumes, focusing on the common traits of standout candidates.

Background

Growing up, my father, who worked in construction, was always someone I deeply respected. Occasionally, when I visited him at the site with my mother, I witnessed his commanding presence as he directed the work, commanding the trust and respect of everyone around him. My father led with a masculine presence and charisma, demanding strict adherence while never forgetting human consideration and kindness. He possessed a leadership style that skillfully balanced the carrot and the stick, gently guiding many people.
Given his career at that time, he could have secured a relatively comfortable position, but he insisted that his abilities were best utilized on the field, busily crisscrossing various sites. His energetic passion was palpable in that very demeanor. Mother would tease him, saying, “You never know when an accident might happen, yet you’re so carefree,” but to me, even those words carried respect and love. I knew better than anyone that Mother respected and loved Father deeply.
Father told me he would fully support and invest generously in whatever I wanted to do. He often shared stories about his past, how he had many dreams he wished to achieve but had to choose his current path due to circumstances beyond his control. He said he wanted to actively support me so that I could achieve my most cherished dream.
That’s why my role model in life has always been my father, ever since I was a child. Whenever I drew my future aspirations or imagined someone I wanted to emulate, the image of my amazing father working on-site was always there. I even drew myself wearing a hardhat beside him, showing how deeply I yearned for the construction industry he was part of.

School Life

Whenever I participated in career exploration activities or job shadowing at school, I always sought out construction-related roles. My childhood dream was that firmly rooted. At first, my father thought I was just stubbornly insisting on doing the same work because I admired his dependable image. But as time passed and I remained steadfast in that same dream even as I grew older, he often showed signs of being both somewhat surprised and genuinely proud. My passion, which he had initially dismissed as mere fleeting curiosity or simple interest, had persisted earnestly over a long period. The fact that this path aligned with his own must have filled him with immense pride.
Father repeatedly told me that his line of work was extremely demanding and required immense physical strength. Yet, whenever I showed resolve to follow a similar path, he would subtly take pride in me. He would even casually mention me to acquaintances, beaming with satisfaction – the classic doting father. Of course, I heard whispers from others: “Isn’t he just easily following the path his father paved?” But I resolved to work harder than anyone to break through that prejudice. While my dream was clearly influenced by my father, I knew I had to prove it wasn’t mere admiration or a fleeting desire, nor was it selfish ambition to live comfortably relying solely on his help. I believed I could only demonstrate this through my own sincere effort and ability.
I respect my father and aspire to emulate him, but I have dedicated myself to carving out my own future and building it up, not by relying on unconditional help to live comfortably, but by striving to stand beside him one day as a proud, capable worker in my own right. Along the way, there were times when it felt overwhelming, but I kept reminding myself that my choice was never a shallow imitation or simple mimicry. Today, I continue to walk my path silently and steadfastly. I believe that at the end of this path, the day will come when my father and I can stand shoulder to shoulder and smile together.

Strengths and Weaknesses of My Character

I take great pride in what I accomplish through my own self-reliance and always strive to do my very best. Though I followed in my father’s footsteps into a similar career in the construction industry, I was well aware that I could be misunderstood as coasting on the reputation of my father, who already held a solid position in the field. However, I believed I had to shatter such prejudice through my own sweat and effort. Words or excuses alone cannot overcome reality; I trusted that walking on my own two feet, without relying solely on my father’s help, would be the true proof of my worth. This conviction became the driving force that constantly pushed me to challenge myself, overcome difficulties whenever they arose, and grow step by step.
Of course, some people advised me, “Wouldn’t it be better to enjoy the privileges you can have?” Given that everyone has different innate qualities and backgrounds, they argued I should utilize my given family environment as a valuable resource. Some also said there was no shame in accepting help. Yet I wanted to be a child who could stand tall through my own efforts, without bringing shame upon my father’s name. That very conviction has been the greatest force sustaining me until now, and it will remain the standard of life that continues to strengthen me.

View on Life

Ultimately, I believe one must carve out and build their own life. Today, when farming, we utilize various agricultural machinery born from the advancement of farming methods and technology, developed through the wisdom of our ancestors, to cultivate fields more easily. Yet, no matter how good the tools and methods, crops cannot grow properly without one’s own effort and sweat. While it is important to leverage the environment and knowledge laid down by previous generations to forge a smoother path ahead, the core driving force, both then and now, must ultimately come from one’s own sweat and passion.
I intend to move forward relentlessly, propelled by boundless energy and vitality. I aspire to build my own track record that allows me to stand confidently in any position, and through that record and achievements, establish myself as someone who makes meaningful contributions to society. I believe this is the foremost value and virtue I must pursue in my life.

Motivation for Application and Aspirations

The image of my father commanding the construction site with his commanding presence was the scene that resonated most deeply in my life. From childhood, his dignified and responsible demeanor became a solid role model in my heart, naturally leading me to dream of a career in the construction industry. People often remarked that I would “walk an easier path under my father’s shadow.” However, I have always guarded against relying unconditionally on innate circumstances or fortuitous opportunities, as I desired recognition based solely on my own effort and capability, not anyone else’s power or background.
My reason for choosing your company also aligns with this value. Your company possesses a corporate culture that evaluates and manages talent based on clear standards and fair procedures, not connections or favoritism. Within these principles, I am confident I can prove my worth solely through my own effort and abilities. I will never approach my duties complacently; I aspire to become a self-driven individual who takes responsibility and delivers results, just as my father did.
To catch up to my father, who spent his life steadfastly holding his ground on construction sites and leaving a clear mark in his field, I will approach every moment with a mindset of learning and challenging myself. I will do my utmost to become someone recognized for ability, not power or background, and furthermore, to become a member who aligns with your company’s values and vision.
