Three Joys I Experience While Making Furniture in My Workshop
I deeply enjoy creating things with my hands. The moment I see the result taking shape bit by bit under my fingertips, an indescribable sense of pride and excitement washes over me. That’s why I head to my workshop without fail every weekend to make furniture. For me, this work is more than just a hobby; it’s like a ‘daily vitamin’ that gifts me three distinct joys during the process.
The first happiness begins the moment I conceptualize the piece. I enjoy the process of flipping through interior design magazines or foreign books, selecting a design I want to create, and pondering how to add my own unique touch. The anticipation that “this will be my own creation” swells, and the picture in my mind gradually takes shape.
The second happiness comes when selecting the wood. While I still rely heavily on my workshop instructor’s help for this part, I listen carefully to expert advice because the final piece’s atmosphere changes significantly based on the wood’s grain and quality. Still, the excitement and responsibility I feel when deciding for myself, “This wood will suit this piece,” is indescribable. It feels like I’ve become the ‘decision-maker’ choosing the material for my work.
And the third happiness, simultaneously the greatest challenge, comes during the actual production process. Unfolding the blueprint, planing, sanding, and carving the wood to fit together—this time demands patience and dedication. The moment when each touch of my hands gradually transforms rough wood into a ‘work of art’ feels sublime. But this process cannot be rushed. Only by avoiding impatience and pouring my whole heart into each step can I achieve the desired result. That’s why I call this time ‘a time where joy and hardship coexist.’
The sense of accomplishment when I finally gift the finished piece to someone who needs it, or when I place it perfectly in my own space, is unmatched by anything else. To others, it may be just a piece of furniture, but to me, it is a ‘work of art’ containing my time and heart. This work, which gifts me three joys—from conception to creation, and the satisfaction after completion—is the hobby I am most immersed in these days.
A Grand Dream Built with Patience
I love hobbies that demand long-term patience. Like quilting, cross-stitching, or puzzle-solving, I find immense satisfaction in the process of quietly working toward completion over extended periods. Sometimes, to demonstrate the level my patience has reached, I’ve made quilts so large they’d be difficult to display in an exhibition, or tackled puzzles of a size that far exceeds people’s imagination. In truth, my hobbies are often considered ‘boring’. Yet I wanted to prove firsthand that even within this ordinary, slow-paced realm, I could still elicit genuine surprise and admiration. I also deeply desired to show that my patience, honed over years, is anything but ordinary.
When mentioned in my quilting club as the ‘person who submitted the largest quilt,’ I feel a bit embarrassed and it makes me smile. But when I see everyone’s eyes widen in awe before my work, an indescribable thrill washes over me in that moment. That feeling is even deeper because I didn’t just slap something together to make it big; I poured effort into perfecting every single small detail. My current goal is to complete a quilt large enough to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Through this, I want to clearly show myself and others that even within my seemingly ordinary, even mundane daily life, such heart-pounding challenges and excitement can exist.
Time spent with the brush tip, mastering the mind
I have practiced calligraphy consistently for a long time. I first began calligraphy during high school. While preparing for college entrance exams, everyone struggles with worries about their career path, academic advancement, and anxieties about the future. Back then, many friends around me suffered from depression due to excessive stress and deteriorating health. I, too, sought my own hobby to escape the pressure of entrance exams, and that choice was ‘calligraphy’. Calligraphy is an activity that allows you to focus and immerse yourself in a quiet space, making it the best way for me to relieve stress and calm my mind. I joined the calligraphy club at school and began learning calligraphy in earnest.
During high school, having a dedicated club room provided a stable practice space, making it very convenient for calligraphy and offering an environment well-suited to balancing it with studies. However, things changed after entering university. The process of grinding ink and preparing hanji paper became cumbersome, and finding a suitable space for it proved difficult, making it hard to continue calligraphy. Despite this, I didn’t want to give up calligraphy entirely. So, while searching for ways to continue my hobby by carving out time, I discovered a practice studio offering calligraphy courses and immediately began taking classes. Calligraphy was an appealing field, sharing many similarities with traditional calligraphy while also offering the potential to create a unique, personalized style that could even be commercialized.
I continue to practice writing diligently, building on what I’ve learned from both traditional calligraphy and calligraphy. In this process, it has evolved beyond a simple hobby into a precious time that relieves the day’s fatigue and calms my mind. I intend to continue this hobby for a long time, enjoying both emotional stability and the joy of creation within my life.
My Hobby: Creating Fabric Accessories
My hobby is using a sewing machine to create various fabric accessories. Whenever I have free time, I make items like cushions, quilts, quilted products, and pouches. I give these as gifts to people around me or sometimes sell them separately. People often think it’s ‘unique’ or ‘delicate’ for a man to have this hobby. But I believe it started more from my own manual dexterity than such perceptions. When I discovered I was good at sewing, I naturally began this hobby. When making quilted items, I design the patterns myself, from small accessories to large pieces, and create them based on those designs. I sell not only the finished products but also the patterns themselves.
I started purely for enjoyment, but over time, my patterns and finished pieces gained popularity. This led me to run a personal website as an amateur, and acquaintances often visit to leave comments on my work or inquire about purchases. Sometimes I even receive requests for new patterns. This interest and support are a huge source of strength for me and the driving force that keeps me pursuing this hobby. Above all, it brings me great satisfaction knowing that the fabric products I create find a place in someone’s daily life. Moving forward, I aim to consistently craft warm fabric accessories and household items for children and families, striving to be someone who conveys that homey warmth.
The Joy of Two Designs: Hair and Nails
I studied beauty directly and have experience working as a hair designer. I diagnosed and managed diverse customer hair styles, transforming hair forms and applying designs. With a natural interest and talent for beauty, I consistently research hairstyles and coloring, enjoying documenting various cases. I also have a keen interest in hair coloring products, styling tools, and essential care items, possessing extensive knowledge in these areas. Based on this interest and experience, I’ve developed expertise in comparing and reviewing products, analyzing ingredients and functions. Considering your company specializes in detergents and kitchenware, this strength translates to my ability to thoroughly compare and analyze your products as well.
Recently, I’ve also become deeply fascinated with nail art, pursuing it as a hobby. I believe nail art offers a much broader scope for design application than hair design and is a more flexible field for realizing creative ideas. With a wide variety of nail products available on the market, I find great joy in combining them and researching new designs and patterns. I share this research process with others through my blog and occasionally perform nail art for clients at a nail salon run by an acquaintance.
Thus, I possess both expertise and passion in both hair design and nail art design. This goes beyond a simple hobby; it serves as a foundation for communicating and connecting smoothly with others. Moving forward, I will continue to draw on my passion and experience in both fields, constantly experimenting with new designs and ideas to establish my own unique style.
Finding Inner Peace Through Painting Masterpieces
As I began developing an interest in interior design, my attention naturally turned to masterpieces. Wanting to decorate my home more stylishly, I decided to hang some framed art. When actually shopping for decorative frames, I realized that displaying a masterpiece would look far more sophisticated than a simple photograph. However, the frames themselves weren’t cheap, and masterpieces were often even more expensive, making the idea of spending hundreds of thousands of won on a painting feel somewhat burdensome. Then, it suddenly occurred to me: ‘Instead of buying a painting, what if I tried painting one myself?’ Of course, I knew full well that painting a masterpiece without the touch of an artist was no easy feat, and creating a piece worthy of display would require considerable practice. But the challenge itself felt intriguing, and I even developed the ambition to make the decorative frames myself. So I set two goals: ‘painting masterpieces’ and ‘making frames,’ starting with painting practice first.
Fortunately, there were various DIY sets for painting masterpieces and practice books available on the market, which I used to begin serious practice. For frame making, I researched related books and even visited a furniture shop to learn the process of crafting handmade furniture. These days, hobby workshops are plentiful, making it easy to find places offering furniture-making experiences, which was a huge help. Through this process, I gradually learned the necessary art supplies and easel for completing paintings, as well as the basic materials and techniques for frame making, like wood and hammers. Eventually, I purchased materials myself to build a frame, placed my finished painting inside, and created my very own piece of art.
When I first started painting masterpieces, I went through more trial and error than I expected, but through that process, I tried various works and gradually improved my skills. As time passed, I was able to complete paintings with quite a bit of artistic merit, and the sense of accomplishment when I hung them in my handmade frames on one wall of the living room was indescribable. What began as a simple painting project soon became my new hobby and a precious time to unwind from the day’s stress. Immersing myself in the calm and focused state of painting brings a deep sense of peace, and each time I look at a finished piece, it sparks a new desire to take on another challenge. I never imagined this small interest sparked by interior design would become so deeply woven into my daily life, but now, this time is truly what makes me happiest.
Designing and tailoring clothes myself
I truly love clothes. I’ve always had a deep interest in them, to the point of considering opening my own shop. As a hobby, I even designed clothes for myself to wear. There are two main reasons I design clothes myself. The first is that I don’t see clothes merely as functional tools to protect the body. Clothes are an important means of self-expression, and I believe they only become ‘my own clothes’ when I design and edit them exactly as I envision. I started by altering or refashioning ready-to-wear clothes sold in stores. This naturally led me to become interested in the elements that make up clothing – fabrics, materials, textures, dyeing processes – and I gradually built up specific knowledge and information. Based on this accumulated knowledge, I developed a desire to select fabrics myself, cut patterns, and create my own clothes. I eventually enrolled in a fashion academy to formally learn garment construction, moving beyond simple alterations to fully realize my own designs.
This journey didn’t start with a specific goal in mind. It wasn’t about entering the fashion industry or making it a career; it began purely out of enjoyment, simply because I loved it. Initially, I mainly made easy-to-create T-shirts, but as my skills grew, I started using leftover fabric to make hats, then tried various items like scarves, pants, socks, dresses, and jackets. The satisfaction I felt wearing these clothes myself was indescribable. This experience gave me a second reason to design clothes: the ability to create garments that perfectly fit my body shape, compensating for physical imperfections. No matter how perfect one’s figure may be, everyone has areas that need improvement. For instance, if someone has short legs or a thick waist, being able to personally devise and create designs that compensate for these features was truly fascinating and appealing. In practice, clothes made this way often fit my body much better than ready-to-wear garments and yielded highly satisfying results.
If I continue studying more deeply, I hope to eventually open an online shop selling clothes I’ve made myself. There would be nothing happier than sharing my own designs with the world while doing what I love, and offering a special experience to those who wear them. My journey with clothes will continue from here.
Interest in DIY Interior Design
I naturally developed an interest in interior design when I started living on my own during college. At the time, I lived in a rooftop room with a low deposit and affordable monthly rent, but the space felt cramped because the room itself wasn’t very large. While physically expanding the space wasn’t possible, I thought there might be ways to make it appear more spacious visually, so I began searching for various resources. Initially, I learned interior design techniques to make the space appear larger through internet searches, and as I gathered information, I decided to take on the DIY interior project myself.
First, I removed all the old, yellowed wallpaper throughout the house and repainted it with a blue-toned paint. I also repainted the window and door frames and replaced the dark-colored flooring with a lighter shade. With both the saturation and brightness of the walls and floors increased, the space became noticeably brighter and definitely appeared more spacious. Next, I removed the heavy, long curtains that made the room feel stuffy and replaced them with lighter, more airy materials. Heavy, imposing furniture was replaced with DIY furniture that could be assembled by hand, and colors were carefully chosen and arranged to harmonize with the walls. This made the room appear much brighter and cleaner.
In functional spaces like the kitchen and bathroom, practical products were placed to avoid them becoming ‘all show and no substance’. For instance, in the bathroom, we used cypress wood products to ensure smooth water drainage and employed antibacterial items to prevent bacteria and mold growth. We also paid attention to interior accessories, carefully comparing design and functionality at specialty stores to select key accent pieces. By considering color, accessories, and functionality, the room transformed from merely a pretty space into a comfortable and practical living area.
Color, in particular, significantly influences one’s emotional state, so I carefully considered color combinations that would lift my mood without disrupting the overall atmosphere. Handling every step of the process myself from start to finish also built my confidence in interior design. Now, even if I move, I possess the skills and know-how to decorate a home myself, and I’ve discovered the joy of creating spaces infused with my own taste and ideas.
My Interest in Accessory Making
I have such a deep interest in various accessories and jewelry that I could be called an ‘accessory maniac’. I know how to make rings and necklaces myself, and I also have quite extensive knowledge about the gemstones and raw stones used in jewelry. On top of that, I make and use various accessories like bracelets, anklets, earrings, hairbands, and headbands myself. Thanks to a friend who works as a gemologist, I’ve had access to professional gem information. However, in my actual crafting process, I primarily use raw stones because they are easier to handle and allow for more unique expression. Rings, bracelets, and necklaces made with raw stones are beautiful in color and form, and easy to wear, so you can find various products like these in stores. I use these store-bought items as references to get design ideas, and I continue my hobby by trying out new designs tailored to my taste.
For ring making, I melt metal materials to create new forms and engrave letters or patterns onto them. Bracelets are crafted in various styles, from nylon materials to leather, chains, cords, watch-shaped designs, and even using elastic bands. While these pieces aren’t yet at a scale for external sales or official introduction, I gift them to acquaintances or keep them for my own satisfaction. Particularly with bracelets and earrings, I can produce pieces of quality comparable to commercial products using only my own skills. My goal is to further hone my techniques in this field and grow to a level where I can distribute products.
Currently, there are various courses available to learn beadwork or accessory crafting in this field. I too continue my creative work by frequently taking classes and gathering related information. This hobby goes beyond simply satisfying my desire for accessories; it provides the joy of the creative process and the aesthetic satisfaction that comes from producing beautiful results. Moving forward, I plan to create more pieces through this captivating hobby and expand my own design world.
Miniature Prop Creation: My Own Delicate Hobby
My hobby requires extreme meticulousness and attention to detail. It’s ‘miniature prop making,’ and lately, I’ve been creating a variety of items, including tiny houses, model buildings, miniature furniture, and even ceramic pieces finished by hand. While miniature items are usually thought of as palm-sized, the pieces I create are much smaller—‘nail-sized’. From phones and laptops to common household appliances, furniture, and even house models, I meticulously recreate real objects as if they were perfectly scaled down. This instantly captures people’s curiosity. I don’t just roughly shape things; I focus on bringing out the details, meticulously crafting everything from the small curves of window frames to door handles, chimneys, and the smoke rising from them.
Initially, I created pieces purely as a hobby, photographing them and posting them on my blog. Then one day, I received a contact from a company specializing in prop production and sales. Intrigued by the intricacy and charm of my work, they proposed external distribution, which eventually led to a formal contract. As a result, I gained support for materials, production tools, and even a dedicated space for more detailed work. What began as a hobby evolved into a specialty and professional endeavor.
As I began creating pieces and receiving royalties, I found myself increasingly challenged to produce work of higher quality. To create pieces with artistic merit, not just simple miniatures, I devoted more effort to detailed expression, and customer satisfaction rose accordingly. Every time someone holding my work exclaims, “It really looks like the real thing!” I feel the full reward and sense of accomplishment of that moment. In a small space, with small materials, yet holding infinite possibilities, this work is now an important part of my life and another world born from my fingertips.
