This blog post introduces methods to effectively showcase communication skills and learner-centered teaching abilities in language school application essays, based on practical teaching experience gained through actual conversation classes.
My Growth Journey
As a child, I harbored an endless fascination with the languages of distant, unfamiliar lands. Though I couldn’t afford to freely travel abroad, I experienced their atmosphere indirectly through foreign films and dramas. The fact that people lived using language systems and cultures entirely different from ours, and that I was just one among them, felt incredibly diverse and profound to me. The fact that people exist who traverse diverse cultural spheres to build their lives, and that technological advancement is gradually increasing the number of people benefiting from such opportunities, became the catalyst that drove me to dedicate myself to learning foreign languages with the conviction that I too could become one of them someday.
Given my family’s circumstances, I could only learn slowly by listening to English tapes borrowed from relatives or reading old books in their original languages, rather than receiving formal education. Yet even that felt like a blessing I couldn’t easily take for granted, and I was simply happy. The simple fact that characters with vastly different pronunciations and entirely distinct writing systems exist in foreign countries, yet their meanings often correspond to concepts we use in daily life, simultaneously sparked my interest and familiarity. Although I received consistent foreign language education at school, the ‘exam-prep’ English taught through tedious, rigid grammar drills failed to spark any vitality or interest. Consequently, I remained lackluster and failed to stand out. Instead of a vibrant language used by living people, the textbooks were filled with a system that felt like dried, cut-up fish spread out everywhere.
School Days
While my friends chattered about domestic celebrities or dramas they saw on TV, I was secretly pursuing my own hobby: struggling to watch foreign dramas and movies without subtitles. The unfamiliar worlds of exotic foreign countries, which I’d only encountered through photos or the internet, felt far more captivating to me than domestic dramas filled with the all-too-familiar sights and lifestyles of Korea. Moreover, whenever I sensed that distinct foreignness—where even minor incidents or everyday conversations carried emotions or systems different from ours—I was suddenly struck by how vast the world was, filled with people of such diverse dispositions and cultures. It made me want to step out into that vast world myself and experience it firsthand.
This hobby of mine sometimes led to misunderstandings—that I was holed up in my room, neglecting my studies and watching useless things—but thanks to my rapidly improving English skills, it didn’t cause any major problems. Moreover, my experience of reaching beyond American dramas and movies to explore works from Japan, China, and other countries, indirectly experiencing diverse foreign sensibilities, became the driving force behind my desire to learn the languages of various nations. I believe I probably had some natural talent. However, the far more powerful factor that spurred me on was my situation, where I could only circle within my fixed living radius unless I saved enough money, and my mindset, which hoped ‘to experience diverse worlds someday’ and sought to gradually learn languages as part of that effort. It was pure longing for foreign lands, not coercion or necessity, that allowed me to gradually learn languages.
Personality Strengths and Weaknesses
Once I set a goal, I have a personality that persists with steady perseverance. Even when facing a long-term vision requiring a distant outlook, I never give up or falter carelessly. I advance slowly, holding the mindset that only my unceasing dedication can achieve all results. Like the tortoise who, despite promising a race against a rabbit that was practically impossible to win, responded with an unyielding will that never broke. As a child, I dreamed of becoming someone who could freely travel abroad. Yet my reality seemed infinitely distant from such a future, and it appeared I would simply conform to the life given to me, living an ordinary, repetitive existence like everyone else. However, I held the belief that my own efforts could change my life in any way I desired. It was the result of my consistent preparation since childhood that allowed me to reach my current level.
Occasionally, people would discourage me, saying I was dreaming too big. They argued that one must know how to set goals within their means, and that aiming too high inevitably leads to disappointment. Yet, I held onto the will to pull hope down with my own hands. Through relentless effort, I managed to turn my principles into outstanding results with my own hands.
Life Philosophy
I believe that mastering language is crucial for achieving deep understanding and meaningful exchange with foreign cultures. While translation services and programs have advanced significantly thanks to technological progress, I still think learning each other’s languages and grasping their unique characteristics is paramount to understanding subtle nuances and differences in perspective. Moreover, communication mediated indirectly through interpretation, rather than direct linguistic exchange, inevitably creates a peculiar sense of distance, as if shrouded by an opaque veil. This can hinder genuine human connection.
In other words, to bridge the gap of having lived within different cultural systems and conceptual worlds, we gain the opportunity to understand each other’s differences and compare them to our own ways by learning the language that most deeply embodies those characteristics. This also serves as a foundation, laying the groundwork for communication.
Career History
I began my career as an English instructor at ○○ Academy, teaching advanced intermediate conversation and listening classes for four years. I then worked for two years as a video lecture instructor at ○○ Internet Lecture Company, accumulating relevant experience.
Motivation and Aspirations
Growing up in modest circumstances, I could only experience foreign cultures through dramas, movies, or foreign languages. This background became the foundation for my dedication to learning languages to understand the cultures of those countries. I came to believe that acquiring language first, gaining deeper knowledge, and directly embracing the meaning was far quicker than accumulating superficial knowledge or indirect materials about a country. I feel this perspective on foreign languages aligns closely with your company, which often describes language as the most direct bridge to foreign lands, prompting my application.
If given the opportunity to utilize my language skills at your company, I would prioritize providing an experience that embraces linguistic diversity and allows individuals seeking to respond sensitively to the changes and trends in neighboring countries within this increasingly interconnected globalized era to discover the joy of language. I believe that if language is emphasized solely as a rigid ‘obligation to learn,’ people’s interest wanes easily. This makes it highly likely that foreign languages will be perceived merely as hard data to cram into one’s head, rather than something useful in daily life.
