How to incorporate an emotional growth background into a designer’s resume?

This blog post explores how an emotional growth background can become a competitive advantage in a designer’s resume, along with specific ways to express it.

Growth Process

“Finding Stability Through Art.”
From a young age, I was a highly competitive child. Growing up as the middle child of three sisters, I naturally developed a competitive spirit to gain my parents’ attention between my older sister and younger sister. Before my younger sister was born, I was the youngest and received all the attention, but when my sister, three years younger, arrived, I felt like I was losing my parents’ focus. Because of this, I sometimes bullied my younger sister during my childhood. However, as time passed, I gradually realized that my parents’ love was equal for all of us. After that, I grew to cherish my sister more, and our relationship improved.
Wanting to be better than both my sister and my younger sister at everything, I always worked very hard. I tried to emulate everything my older sister did. I pursued various activities, including piano, taekwondo, and art, attending academies for each, in addition to my studies. My sole reason for giving my all to every activity was to earn my parents’ praise. While attending art classes, I received consistent praise from my teacher and frequently won awards in school art competitions, which gradually nurtured my self-esteem. My parents also recognized my drawing talent and generously encouraged and supported me to fully develop my abilities.
Through drawing, I found an area I was good at and truly enjoyed, which gradually brought me emotional stability. My jealousy towards my older sister and younger sister naturally faded, and our sibling relationship improved significantly. When I immersed myself in drawing, I could concentrate so deeply that hours would fly by, and my mind became much calmer. Up until elementary school, I was the most jealous and loudest child in the house, but through drawing, my inner self gradually stabilized and my personality softened. As we passed through adolescence, unnecessary conflicts between sisters decreased. We learned to respect that we each had different interests and strengths, fostering genuine support and affection. My parents were immensely pleased with this transformation.
Additionally, my parents always created opportunities for us sisters to stay close to nature, ensuring we didn’t become emotionally barren. We frequently went on family trips to experience nature, allowing us to feel and learn much in a relaxed atmosphere. Those experiences enriched my sensitivity and became crucial foundations shaping who I am today.
Through drawing, I found a way to express myself and gain stability. This allowed me to understand myself more deeply, and my relationships with those around me naturally improved. Though my journey of growth began with fierce competitiveness, the process taught me to manage my emotions in my own way, shaping me into the warm and resilient person I am today.

Personality Introduction

I possess a cautious and meticulous personality. I have diverse interests and excel at deep concentration when focused on a single task. My concentration peaks especially when painting, and this focus naturally extends to reading and studying. At times, I become so immersed that I completely tune out surrounding sounds. Since I often apply ideas gained from reading to my paintings, I maintain a constant curiosity about new information and knowledge. This concentration translates into my thoroughness and meticulousness; I always strive to do my absolute best to complete any task flawlessly and perfectly.
This carefulness and thoroughness have become another major strength of mine. Even when drawing, if a part turns out differently than expected, I don’t just let it go; I have the ingrained habit of checking each step to understand why that result occurred. Thanks to this habit, in daily life too, I always think things through thoroughly before acting and prepare meticulously to avoid mistakes. The ‘habit of thinking’ that developed naturally through painting has also greatly influenced me to be more cautious in every action.
Of course, this caution doesn’t always work solely as an advantage. Sometimes, even when I need to make an important decision, I end up postponing it because I consider too many factors. Whereas I used to act impulsively as a child, I’ve now become overly cautious, sometimes to the point of being unable to make decisions on my own. However, I strive to prevent this trait from solidifying into a weakness. The moment I sense my thoughts becoming too deep, I seek advice from adults, seniors, or friends around me without hesitation, aiming to find balance. By compensating for my shortcomings in this way, I continue to grow in a better direction.

School Life and Extracurricular Activities

“Talent Validated Through Competitions”
During college, I started volunteering club activities at the suggestion of a close friend. After spending hours immersed in drawing work, engaging in activities of a completely different nature helped me relieve tension and gain new energy, and club activities served that purpose. Unlike the quiet, focused, and static nature of my work, volunteering naturally brought out my active and sociable personality. Regularly visiting facilities for people with disabilities to assist with physical activities helped me develop my interpersonal skills. This experience led me to learn sign language and participate in producing audiobooks for the hearing impaired.
My major was Visual Design. Alongside hands-on manual work, I completed various projects by also utilizing digital tools like Photoshop and Illustrator. Initially, it took some time to become familiar with digital tools, but as I gradually got the hang of them, I now actively leverage graphic programs. Tasks that were cumbersome and time-consuming when done manually can now be efficiently implemented using tools, improving both my work speed and the quality of my finished pieces.
The most memorable experience during my university years was the valuable achievements gained from two competitions. The first was an advertising video content contest hosted by a telecommunications company. For this, I created and submitted a 2D animation, achieving the great success of winning the Silver Prize. Despite the heavy workload of school classes, practical training, and assignments making it difficult to dedicate sufficient time to the contest preparation, I approached the work with the mindset of ‘once I started, I would see it through to completion.’ The joy and sense of accomplishment I felt when that completed work yielded unexpected results is something I still cannot forget.
The second was a youth animation contest hosted by Gyeonggi Province. This was a project where I teamed up with friends who had worked on my graduation piece to create and submit a ‘Gyeonggi Culture Promotion Animation’. Thanks to our excellent teamwork, the entire process—from the actual work to the preparation—was enjoyable. Of course, selecting the concept and dividing the workload wasn’t easy, and fitting it around final exam periods was tight, but because we approached it with a positive attitude, that spirit naturally infused the final result. As a result, we won the Excellence Award and gained valuable experience.
In this way, I have cultivated my design skills through diverse experiences. Building on teamwork, communication, and a consistent commitment to improving quality, I am growing into a designer with my own distinct style. Moving forward, I intend to give my best effort to every opportunity, enjoy new challenges, and continue developing.

Career Experience

“A time where my creativity and planning skills were recognized”
I took my first steps as a designer in the Design Team of the Product Planning Department at ○○ Co., Ltd. As a company specializing in fancy stationery, the design team held significant influence, and the team atmosphere was strict and systematic. A clear seniority hierarchy existed, and even a single design output required thorough review and evaluation through meetings. The workload assigned to each member was substantial, leading to frequent overtime. However, knowing this was the path our seniors had walked, I embraced it with a mindset of learning and found it rewarding.
Despite being a new hire, I was entrusted with the significant responsibility of leading the calendar design team, gaining practical experience beyond typical entry-level roles. In my second year, I planned a lifestyle product set featuring our proprietary characters, including cushions and mugs. This product line achieved high sales immediately after launch, significantly boosting company revenue. Recognizing this achievement, I was honored to receive the Outstanding Employee Award that year.
The hands-on design skills, planning abilities, and illustration production capabilities I gained in the field became the foundation for realizing my creativity and ideas, going beyond mere technical growth. I am confident these experiences will be assets that bring fresh inspiration and value to Artbox in new environments.

Motivation for Applying and Aspirations After Joining

“I will design a world of fresh imagination!”
While working on stationery and fancy goods design, I constantly draw new ideas from animation. I don’t just borrow characters; I also find inspiration in animation backgrounds and props, reinterpreting them in my own way and developing them into products that have garnered positive responses. I am adept at discovering creative elements even in small daily joys and confident in translating them into concrete designs.
Artbox is a company with a long history and deep expertise in the domestic stationery and fancy goods sector, a brand beloved for its stylish and vibrant items. Artbox’s creative and cheerful brand identity aligns well with my design philosophy, and I believe my ideas and experience will truly shine within it, which is why I am applying here. I believe Artbox is a brand that goes beyond simple design to deliver ‘joy’ and ‘emotion’ to people. I want to grow as a designer who can lead new trends by adding my creativity to these values of Artbox.
I have always craved original ideas and pursued ‘novelty’. This desire has driven me to constantly ponder, never cease experimenting, and ultimately become the driving force behind creating my own design world. At Artbox, with its world of imagination, infinite creative space, and endorphin-filled atmosphere of freedom, I want to create designs that anyone can relate to through fresh creativity. Designs that naturally blend into people’s daily lives while instantly bringing a smile to their faces—that is the designer I aspire to be. As a designer enriching the world of imagination alongside Artbox, I will continue to unfold greater possibilities and creativity.
