How Should Trade Company Applicants Showcase Their Language Skills?

This blog post introduces effective methods and specific expression strategies for highlighting English and second foreign language proficiency in trade company cover letters.

Growth Process

My upbringing could have easily led to negative thinking, but by shifting my perspective, I developed a positive outlook on life. As a child, my father’s job required us to move frequently to different regions. Initially, adapting to unfamiliar environments was challenging, but I soon realized these experiences offered opportunities to encounter diverse cultures. Rather than viewing it as “troublesome” or “inconvenient,” I embraced it positively as a chance to meet new people and explore new places. This significantly shaped my personality and mindset.
Moving once or twice a year meant packing only the essentials, naturally cultivating a habit of letting go of unnecessary possessions. This helped me grow into someone adept at organization and taught me a simple, efficient way of life. However, the hardest part of moving was undoubtedly saying goodbye to friends. Each time I bid farewell to friends I’d grown close to over a year of living together, I initially had to soothe my sadness with tears. But as time passed, I came to realize it wasn’t a complete farewell. I learned that even when physically apart, we could maintain our connection as long as our hearts remained linked. From then on, I developed a much calmer attitude toward ‘parting’.
This experience shaped my values regarding human relationships. I cherish every connection I form and strive to sustain those relationships. I’ve learned firsthand that maintaining human bonds requires more than just good intentions; it demands consistent care and effort. Especially with friends I met during my study abroad years, spatial and temporal constraints make frequent meetings difficult. Yet, to preserve these precious connections, I actively maintain contact through emails, phone calls, Facebook, and other means. Through these efforts, I live my life reflecting on the depth and meaning of relationships.
This unique upbringing, marked by frequent moves, taught me organization, adaptability, and insights into relationships. My attitude of seeking positive meaning even in negative environments remains a crucial foundation in my life. Moving forward, I intend to continue finding meaning amidst change and nurturing precious connections.

School Days

I decided to study abroad in China during my first year of high school and began studying both English and Chinese from that point on. Although the Chinese university I attended conducted all classes in English, making Chinese not immediately essential, I believed that lacking the language would cause significant inconvenience in daily life. Therefore, I set off for my studies abroad having mastered at least basic conversational skills. Fortunately, thanks to my uncle, who was already accustomed to life in China, I was able to adapt quickly to the new environment. My uncle ran a study abroad agency in China, helping Korean students there adapt well to local universities. He also provided college admissions consulting for students coming from Korea to study at Chinese universities.
By my sophomore year, my English and Chinese skills had improved significantly enough that I could assist my uncle with his agency work. I particularly helped newly arrived Korean students adapt to university life by teaching them basic Chinese conversation and advising them on important points to note for daily life in China. This experience brought about a major change in my personality. Whereas I used to be somewhat introverted, I became more proactive and open-minded, approaching strangers first to ask about their difficulties and offer help.
Meanwhile, majoring in International Relations at university, I conducted in-depth analyses of diplomatic and cooperative structures between nations. Particularly interested in trade, I organized a small study group within my department and wrote a thesis on international trade, receiving positive evaluations from professors. Driven by a desire to deepen my expertise in my major, I set the goal of “reading 300 major-related books.” By graduation, I had read a total of 313 books and meticulously recorded each one. This experience will serve as a solid foundation for demonstrating expertise in future trade-related work.
Thus, the diverse experiences during my study abroad period and my persistent exploration of my major have fostered multifaceted growth in my capabilities. Moving forward, I will build upon this foundation, adding diligence and responsibility, and strive relentlessly to become a professional who delivers tangible results.

Regarding Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality

The greatest strength of my personality is my considerate nature towards others. When interacting with people, I focus on sharing genuine, heartfelt communication based on sincerity. I believe this mindset has positively influenced my relationships with others. I believe my open attitude was particularly key to making friends of diverse nationalities in China. My respect for different cultures and willingness to embrace positive aspects naturally conveyed sincerity to others. This sincerity fostered trust, becoming the driving force behind maintaining long-lasting relationships.
Based on this open mindset, I do not stubbornly insist on my own opinions and willingly accept others’ criticism or advice. When someone points out my mistakes or shortcomings, rather than taking it negatively, I reflect on myself and see it as an opportunity for improvement. By contemplating what aspects of my actions or thinking were lacking and striving not to repeat the same mistakes, I was able to grow further. During my department club activities, I actively listened to diverse opinions, acknowledged mistakes, and led by coordinating efforts. This approach naturally fostered trust and collaboration among members. Building on this strength, I aim to grow into a valuable asset at your company through seamless communication and teamwork within any organization.
However, I also have weaknesses. At times, my overly optimistic mindset led to complacency. I’ve had moments where I interpreted situations too positively without putting in sufficient effort, thinking, ‘It’ll work out.’ This became a moment for self-reflection. After realizing that a positive attitude only holds meaning after giving my absolute best, I developed the mindset to thoroughly prepare and exert effort first, only then accepting the outcome with a positive heart. Keeping in mind that results without effort are impossible, I continuously strive to manage myself effectively so that I can leverage the strengths of my bright and positive personality more efficiently.
Moving forward, I will maximize my strengths and work to improve my weaknesses, building relationships with others through a sincere and genuine attitude. I believe this personality will play a crucial role in building trust and fostering collaboration within an organization, and I will constantly strive to achieve the best results based on this foundation.

Career Experience (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)

While assisting my uncle with his study abroad agency in China, I gained firsthand insight into the increasing mobility of people within the international community. My uncle’s observation that the number of international students was growing rapidly, unlike in the past, further solidified my interest and aspiration in the field of trade. While handling the agency’s overall operations, I focused on helping students adapt to their new environment. Throughout this process, I constantly sought to understand and identify their practical needs. I believe accurately understanding and delivering what customers want is fundamental to any transaction. My experience at the agency naturally instilled a basic mindset for business and economics, teaching me to identify customer needs and develop the mindset to fulfill them.
During brief stays in Korea over vacations, I also assisted with English and Chinese document translation at the request of acquaintances. These documents were mostly practical materials related to import/export contracts, containing numerous specialized terms. While this took more time than simple general translation, it was a highly beneficial experience for me as I directly encountered trade-related terminology and actual document formats. Although the translation work was at a basic level, I believe the process provided an opportunity to develop practical skills and gain a more realistic understanding of the international business environment.
Building on the capabilities I have cultivated through these diverse field experiences and hands-on participation in practical work, I will perform your company’s tasks diligently and responsibly. I will grow into a talent who goes beyond simple task execution to accurately grasp customer needs and deliver tangible value.

Motivation for Application and Aspirations

T. S. Eliot said, “Only those who are willing to risk going too far can discover how far they can go.” I deeply resonate with this statement and believe that risk is always present in life. However, people often live forgetting this risk exists, only to regret it when danger actually strikes. To avoid such regret, I always strive to act while keeping the possibility of risk in mind. In that sense, joining your company this time may also be a kind of ‘risk’ for me. But I believe that if I can turn that risk into an opportunity and grow through it, it can become a stepping stone to even greater stability and development.
Today, globalization is no longer a choice but a necessity, and vibrant international trade is the core driving force behind national economies. I chose to study in China to actively respond to this trend of the times. China is one of the world’s most important trade markets, and its significance will only grow in the future. I judged that gaining a deeper understanding of China was essential, and I am now confident that this choice was correct. It was during this process that I learned about your company, and I was deeply impressed by its vision and role in actively conducting trade activities on the global stage. Particularly given that international diplomacy plays a significant role not only in politics but also in economics, I believe your company’s activities greatly contribute to enhancing our nation’s national power and improving its international image. In this sense, I applied with the aspiration to join your company and participate in this great undertaking.
While majoring in International Relations in China, I took courses in international politics, economics, and trade, solidifying my expertise in these related fields. Now, I aim to apply the theoretical knowledge I’ve acquired academically to practical work, growing into a hands-on professional who harmoniously integrates theory and reality. Moving forward, I will maintain a mindset of continuous learning, always embracing challenges and growth, striving to become a valuable contributor to your company. I sincerely hope that my experience and capabilities can grow alongside your company’s future.
