What experiences should insurance industry applicants focus on?

This blog post introduces the key experiences and expression methods applicants preparing for insurance industry jobs should emphasize in their cover letters.

Growth Process

“Passion and Self-Control”
I spent a lot of time with my younger sibling under working parents. Naturally, I felt the responsibility of being the eldest son and strove to be a good role model for my sibling. This environment greatly influenced me to grow into a responsible person from a young age. In school, I was an active student who enjoyed presenting in front of friends and expressing my thoughts. I always raised my hand to ask questions or share opinions during class, participating actively. My outgoing personality and excellent athletic skills earned me much affection from both friends and teachers.
As a child, I was full of passion. I loved playing pranks with friends and, being taller than most kids my age, carried myself with confidence wherever I went. I had good stamina and a determined personality, especially loving soccer. I even formed a soccer team with friends on our own initiative. Being a strong runner, I represented my class in every sports day event. My exceptional flexibility also led me to start learning ballet in middle school, recommended by my dance teacher. I joined the school’s ballet club for extracurricular activities. With a shortage of male students, I consistently performed in the school arts festival, often taking on central roles. While ballet helped me develop physical control and expressiveness, I regrettably quit when I entered high school to focus on academics.
Meanwhile, my parents were very strict about money management. Growing up watching them live frugally, I naturally learned the value of money from a young age and prioritized saving over spending. When I received New Year’s money or allowance, I saved it diligently rather than spending it on toys or shoes. I kept the money I saved for something truly necessary or deeply desired. On my parents’ birthdays or wedding anniversaries, I would prepare gifts with the money I had saved to express my heartfelt wishes. These savings ultimately proved invaluable when purchasing a laptop after entering university. The meticulousness and self-discipline ingrained in me from a young age proved invaluable during my university years. They became the driving force that allowed me to manage my time strategically and focus intensely on my studies.
Looking back now, my growth journey can be summed up in two words: ‘passion’ and ‘restraint’. It was a time when I would seize opportunities without hesitation when something sparked my interest, while simultaneously disciplining myself to ensure that passion didn’t lead to recklessness. I am confident that this foundation of growth will serve as my unwavering center of gravity, no matter what path I choose in the future.

Strengths and Weaknesses

“Positive energy grounded in responsibility and persuasiveness”
I am a person with logical thinking skills and persuasiveness. During my university years, I was active in a book discussion club. Through this, I encountered diverse books and broadened my perspective by engaging in discussions where we shared differing opinions. Organizing thoughts gained from books and practicing articulating them coherently in discussions naturally cultivated my logical speaking and persuasive expression skills. This became the foundation that further strengthened my character.
My cheerful and straightforward personality is another strength. Since my school days, this trait has enabled me to take initiative in everything I do and maintain a responsible attitude, often leading to me naturally assuming leadership roles. Approaching everything with a positive mindset generated good energy within me, which in turn positively influenced those around me. Consequently, I often give the impression of being a ‘bright and cheerful person’ to those I interact with.
My strong sense of responsibility and meticulous work ethic are another key strength. During my military service, I always took the lead in physically demanding tasks like trench construction. As a squad leader, I attentively addressed each squad member’s concerns and meticulously looked after them. When executing tasks, I have an ingrained habit of thoroughly checking everything until the very end; I’m the type who won’t feel satisfied until a job is fully completed.
However, this meticulousness can sometimes be a drawback. Striving for perfection even in easily manageable tasks has occasionally led to time consumption and delayed work. To overcome this, I always prioritize tasks and set time plans before starting work, striving to handle them efficiently according to those plans. Thanks to this, I am now learning to work in a way that maintains my thoroughness without disrupting the flow of work.
Thus, I am a person who combines responsibility and persuasiveness with logical thinking and positive energy. My meticulous and diligent attitude will remain a strong asset moving forward, and I believe the process of recognizing and improving my weaknesses is also a crucial part of my growth.

School Life

“Preparing Steadily for Employment”
While I didn’t have a particularly clear career path, I chose to major in Economics, which offers diverse career connections. Taking major courses, I realized subjects requiring mathematical and logical thinking aligned well with my interests and became confident they would aid my post-graduation job search. Throughout university, I diligently studied my major while meticulously planning each day to develop the qualities necessary for employment.
I particularly focused on obtaining certifications to build practical skills. I earned Computer Application Proficiency and Word Processor certifications. To demonstrate my English proficiency, I challenged myself with the TOEIC exam and scored 890. Beyond this, I prepared for the Actuary certification, widely recognized as a promising qualification. I passed the first exam and recently completed the second exam, now awaiting the results. Should I obtain the Insurance Actuary certification, I plan to pursue the US Actuary certification as well, aiming for broader opportunities.
After completing my military service and returning to school, I worked in the department office for six months in an administrative role. This experience allowed me to frequently interact with professors I wouldn’t normally have close contact with, gaining practical advice on academics and career paths. In particular, naturally accessing class information and career-related resources enhanced my academic understanding and helped me mature in my approach to university life.
Thus, I have focused not merely on accumulating credits, but on building meaningful time dedicated to preparing for the future. Moving forward, I intend to advance into a broader world with a consistent attitude of learning and challenging myself.

Language Study Abroad

“A Meaningful Time of Challenge and Growth for Me”
I believe living abroad is one of the most valuable challenges one can experience during college. To seize this opportunity, I went on a language study program to Vancouver, Canada. Initially, I wanted to stay for over a year, but considering my practical financial situation, I chose a six-month short-term course. Though it was a short time, I made an effort to focus intensely and work hard.
I often heard from others that since there are many Koreans in Vancouver, many struggle to properly adapt to local life and end up only socializing with other Koreans before returning home. While I understood that concern, I had a clear goal when I left, which allowed me to fully focus on my language studies. In reality, many Korean friends like me, despite not having ample financial means, participated in the language program through their own efforts. Together, we encouraged each other and devoted ourselves to studying. In fact, thanks to those friends, I gained greater motivation and inspiration, allowing me to spend a truly productive time.
Life in an unfamiliar environment wasn’t easy, but my responsible and meticulous nature proved very helpful. Even amidst a new culture and relationships with unfamiliar people, I managed to adapt well by keeping myself motivated. On weekends, I made the most of my time by taking short trips to nearby markets or local travel destinations. My mindset of wanting to experience local life and culture, not just stick to language study, made this experience even richer.
Above all, the greatest achievement was meeting people of diverse nationalities and developing language skills sufficient to communicate effectively with foreigners. Though brief, I built my proficiency through daily small efforts, and this process also strengthened my self-belief. Thus, I remember this language training not merely as an overseas experience, but as a valuable time of growth and challenge.
