In this blog post, based on experiences practicing various volunteer activities and responsibility within organizations, I introduce how to effectively convey authenticity and trustworthiness in a construction job application letter.
Background
“After studying abroad, I applied to the Department of Religious Studies.”
My father was a pastor who primarily served in the United States, France, and several other European countries. As a devout member of the Catholic Church, his primary ministry involved evangelism and lectures. Growing up, I naturally absorbed a sacred mindset and reverent attitude by listening closely to his talks. Our family—my mother, brother, and I—were all united as devout Christians, continuing our faith journey together. Actively participating in church activities alongside my father gradually shaped my dream into becoming a ‘theology student’.
My initial plan was to enter the theology department of a state university in the United States. While continuing my high school education overseas, I suddenly returned to Korea at the end of my sophomore year. Upon hearing that my grandparents were critically ill, my father urgently brought the entire family back to Korea. For me, this unexpected return marked a major turning point in my studies and life. I had to wrap up my studies at the foreign school and adapt to a new high school in Korea. I entered the science track, and keeping up with the new curriculum was not easy. My long-held dream of studying theology had to be shelved due to practical circumstances.
This prompted me to rethink my career path. For my college admissions strategy, I decided to focus on early admissions through special admissions programs that leveraged my overseas experience. While maintaining my academic performance, I also took time for self-exploration. Through various interest and aptitude tests during this process, I gained a more objective understanding of myself. This opened my eyes to new possibilities that suited me, and I naturally developed an interest in the fields of architecture and construction.
This shift in focus felt more natural than expected, and I gained a fresh awareness that beyond my original dream of religious studies, diverse paths existed where I could apply my talents. Consequently, I chose to major in Construction Plant Engineering in college. Through subsequent internships and field participation, I gained practical understanding and experience within the real industrial environment. These varied experiences further fueled my interest in my major and ultimately instilled confidence in my career direction.
Looking back, the sudden return home and career change were confusing at the time, but I now see that period as a valuable time for self-discovery and uncovering new possibilities. I now use those moments of change as a foundation for growth, aiming to continue developing into a person with a broader perspective and expertise through diverse experiences.
Study Abroad Experience
“The experience of pursuing music and releasing an album in the U.S.”
During my time studying abroad in the U.S., I attended a high school located in a nature-friendly area near New York City and lived in a dormitory. Having attended school in France through middle school, I spoke French fluently and was also reasonably proficient in English. This allowed me to adapt quickly to school life in the U.S. without facing language barriers or cultural clashes.
My high school was nestled in a quiet environment blending forests and fields. Living there with friends from diverse backgrounds, we naturally shared each other’s cultures. Although I was born and raised in Korea, my appearance was somewhat exotic. My love for and skill in black music also made it easy for me to connect with friends of various ethnicities. My singing ability quickly brought me closer to music-loving friends, and I started a crew with Black friends who rapped.
Through the crew, I naturally learned to rap, and we actively collaborated while practicing together. This led to the valuable experience of producing and releasing an album. During the album production process, I even had opportunities to meet and interact with famous musicians who were actively performing at the time. Those moments remain cherished memories for me to this day. Back then, fueled solely by my passion for music, I threw myself into a new environment and culture. Music was always at the center of my life as an international student.
My friends and I didn’t just share school life; we became a team, performing together on stage and even traveling to Europe during vacations. I traveled to many countries, including Paris, Belgium, Spain, Italy, and the UK, building unforgettable memories. It wasn’t just simple travel; I also experienced performing busking on local streets, communicating directly with audiences, on numerous occasions. Through these performance activities, I naturally learned how to mingle with people, and my personality became much brighter and more proactive.
Thus, during my time abroad, I spent my days constantly challenging myself and enjoying diverse areas like academics, language, music, and travel. By approaching new cultures and people with an open mind, without fear, I gained invaluable experiences that helped me grow significantly. Looking back, I am certain every moment of my study abroad period was a choice I don’t regret, and it became an important foundation that shaped who I am today.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Personality
“Calm, meticulous, and service-oriented.”
I tend to have a relatively calm and quiet personality. I am not very talkative and prefer to quietly and diligently complete assigned tasks. Even in group settings, I often take on a supporting role, quietly observing the situation rather than leading the atmosphere. When someone else leads or takes charge of a gathering, it feels natural for me to be beside them, organizing the flow, filling in gaps, and keeping pace. Just as someone who speaks well needs someone to listen attentively, and a host needs someone to applaud them, I have always willingly taken on the latter role. Thanks to this personality, I am often trusted in relationships and am seen as a quiet yet stable presence.
This disposition also proves a distinct advantage in handling work. I tend to work calmly, meticulously double-checking to minimize mistakes and avoid carelessness. I strive to responsibly complete assigned tasks and constantly self-monitor to prevent even minor errors from recurring. This approach earned recognition, leading to my role as treasurer during my time with the Management Studies Society. The Business Management Society was a large organization with over 200 active members. Managing their information and collecting membership fees was far from simple or easy. It required both handling numbers and managing people simultaneously, making concentration and meticulousness essential. However, rather than finding this situation burdensome, I saw it as a good fit for me and approached it diligently. As a result, I helped ensure smooth operations and earned the trust and encouragement of fellow members.
Furthermore, I have a strong interest and passion for volunteer work. During my university years, I participated in a missing children search campaign and actively joined World Vision’s events to support children in developing countries. For the missing children campaign, I operated a booth with fellow members right in the heart of Gwanghwamun, raising awareness about missing children and collecting signatures to support the publication of notices across more media outlets. As a campaigner, every warm word exchanged with citizens on the street and every signature of support resonated deeply, reminding me anew that the world still holds warmth. In another activity, a fundraising event for children in developing countries, the amount raised exceeded expectations, bringing immense satisfaction. It was a profound experience, showing me how much greater the impact becomes when the interest and sincerity of people coming together are pooled, beyond mere participation.
Thus, I am someone who quietly but steadfastly fulfills my role, giving my best to the tasks assigned to me, and consistently dedicating myself to sharing and service. Moving forward, I aspire to be someone who positively influences those around me by leveraging my strengths.
Motivation for Application and Aspirations
“Overseas Construction Solutions Division of the Integrated Design Project”
Your company is a major corporation with a solid foothold in the global engineering field, distinguishing itself in both domestic and international markets based on its technological prowess and expertise. While the mere label of ‘major corporation’ is sufficiently appealing as a reason to apply, I am drawn to something more. I focus not just on a company’s outward appearance or image, but on the growth potential, systems, and professional expertise inherent within the organization. I personally prefer larger companies because I believe they possess more systematic work processes and provide environments that maximize the capabilities of each individual member.
I have a deep interest in the construction business and energy plant sectors, and I believe the vision and strategic direction pursued by your company align closely with my career path. I am ○○○, currently applying for the General Division at Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Hyundai Engineering. Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. focuses primarily on the construction industry. Having majored in construction during my university years and thoroughly mastered related theory and practical skills, I was naturally drawn to this division.
At my previous position in a small-to-medium enterprise, I was involved in steel design and manufacturing, primarily focused on the steel industry. During this time, I frequently collaborated with foreign companies, primarily handling meetings and technical communication with overseas clients rather than direct process involvement. I actively utilized the language skills I developed during my studies abroad in the workplace. My work performance was consistently recognized, leading to continued involvement in related tasks.
Of course, overseas experience, including studying abroad, can be a significant asset in performing duties. However, my core professional focus has always been engineering, specifically practical technical work centered on process design and manufacturing management. Accordingly, I am now applying to the integrated design department to revive my original career path and passion. Should I join your company, I anticipate opportunities to collaborate with overseas affiliates and participate in global projects. In this environment, I aim to grow as a professional who not only contributes to the organization based on my past practical experience and language skills but also possesses expertise in the technical field and a passion for new challenges.
Moving forward, I am prepared to continuously learn and grow in step with your company’s development direction, faithfully fulfilling my role as both an engineer and a global communicator. I look forward to my experience and passion creating greater value within your company.
