This blog post introduces specific examples on how to effectively express your sports brand planning experience in your resume.
School Life
“Challenging New Fields with Passion for Sports”
I was significantly taller than my peers from a young age. By elementary school, I was already over 170cm (5’7″), and by middle school, I was often mistaken for an adult wherever I went. Thanks to this physical stature, I naturally joined the basketball team at school and consistently took on the role of leading my team to victory in competitions against peers. Upon entering high school, I began considering joining a basketball team that offered more than just a school club experience—one where I could pursue formal athletic training. I ultimately enrolled in a high school renowned for its basketball program, marking the start of my serious athletic career.
My high school basketball team was among the top in the region, boasting numerous awards and high national recognition. This environment fueled my pride and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the sport. I still maintained a height advantage over my peers, and simultaneously, through rigorous physical training and body management, my athletic abilities also improved noticeably. Thanks to this, I was called the ace within the team and played a central role, with sports becoming a major part of my life. However, as time passed, I faced the reality that simply being tall was insufficient to become a professional athlete. Feeling limitations in technical skills and nuanced game management, I naturally began rethinking my career path.
Around that time, I became interested in physical education. Based on my good physical condition and consistent passion for sports, I judged that the path of an educator teaching sports to students would be a good fit. Even after entering university, my love for basketball remained strong. I played actively on the school basketball team and achieved good results in amateur competitions. Beyond sports, I had a strong curiosity about various fields. Following academic trends, I also took courses in business administration and marketing. During this time, the idea emerged to combine sports and marketing.
To realize this vision, I chose marketing as a minor in graduate school and challenged myself in the new field of sports marketing. During this journey, I was selected as an outstanding researcher by the Korea Research Foundation and gained the opportunity to participate in an overseas training project. This allowed me to expand my passion for sports, which began with basketball, into the distinct fields of education and marketing. Even now, I continue to forge new paths based on that passion.
My Own Path, Forged Through Overcoming Setbacks
“Challenging Myself in the New Field of Sports Marketing, Beyond Physical Limitations”
I didn’t always know sports marketing would be my career path. As a physical education major, I originally excelled at ball sports like basketball and volleyball. I played on amateur basketball teams and the university volleyball team, where my athletic skills were recognized. Back then, I was focused on sports, considering paths like physical education teacher or coach. But my childhood back issues worsened significantly during high school, changing everything.
While I didn’t have to quit sports entirely, my body could no longer handle intense physical activity. I faced the reality that pursuing physical education as a lifelong career was no longer feasible. Though initially frustrated, this experience actually became a catalyst for exploring new possibilities within the sports field. Particularly, as lifelong fitness gained increasing importance, the field of sports marketing presented itself as a new opportunity. It was an area where I could channel my passion for sports without necessarily participating in the physical activity myself.
Coincidentally, just as I decided to pursue graduate studies, a new major in Sports Marketing was established within the College of Physical Education. I became part of the inaugural cohort, taking the first step in this field. My anticipation outweighed any fear of this new path. As I deepened my understanding of the field both academically and practically, my conviction grew.
While many stop in the face of failure or setbacks, I have always strived to find new possibilities without faltering. What others might see as major trials, I instead viewed as starting points for opportunities, which allowed me to see a broader world. Moving forward, no matter what obstacles appear, I aim to overcome them unwaveringly in my own way and become someone who takes one more step forward.
Career Experience
“Handled promotion planning duties in the Sports Business Team”
Having studied both sports and marketing in graduate school, I wrote my thesis focusing on the intensive investigation and analysis of sports marketing cases around graduation time. This thesis received positive evaluations in the industry, which led to my joining the sports business team at an advertising planning company. Immediately after joining as a researcher, I became actively involved in establishing marketing strategies for sports brands. Given the sports industry’s rapidly changing trends and intense competition, I focused on developing strategies to discover new brands and strengthen existing brand images.
For example, one sports brand specializing in outdoor apparel, sneakers, and hiking products struggled to gain competitiveness due to its long-standing, fixed image. Consumer feedback frequently cited the brand as ‘untrendy,’ particularly in design. To address this, our team held numerous meetings to redefine the brand positioning direction. We successfully concluded the project by redefining the brand’s core values and establishing a strategy to select a new target audience based on these values.
Our team’s strength lies not merely in producing advertisements or proposing strategies, but in delivering more comprehensive and tangible results. While typical advertising agencies often conclude their work at specific stages, we introduced an expanded process to provide advertisers with a true ‘one-stop service’. For instance, we built an integrated promotion system encompassing the entire process from casting advertising models to directly leading the shoot and producing a series of advertisements. Through this process, we deliver comprehensive services encompassing brand consulting, event planning and execution, media relations, and sponsorship packages. This approach enhances client satisfaction and enables us to produce competitive results.
This experience—participating in planning and execution that drives tangible change based on an understanding of the sports industry—was deeply meaningful to me and has become a valuable asset that shaped who I am today.
Personality Traits
“Emotional personality, passionate individual”
I possess a richly sensitive and emotional personality. While my active hobbies, such as enjoying sports, may be immediately noticeable, I also deeply love music and have a discerning eye for film. This emotional disposition extends beyond mere hobbies, serving as a distinct strength in my professional work. Especially in today’s world where emotion plays a crucial role, as ‘emotional marketing’ emerges as a core competency for marketers, I believe my disposition can positively impact practical work.
If I have my own distinct color as a marketer, it will clearly shine through even within the final product of strategy. I believe that deeply imprinting a brand’s value in consumers’ hearts requires emotional resonance and connection more than simple information delivery. Ultimately, what stays in people’s memories is emotion, and a brand only gains true value when it connects with emotion. To create precisely that point, I constantly ponder how to strategically leverage my emotional inclinations.
Alongside this emotional aspect, I possess a personality that immerses itself in assigned tasks with passion surpassing others. I approach my work not merely to complete assigned tasks, but with a mindset that constantly contemplates the meaning, impact, and potential for improvement of each endeavor. Therefore, I aspire to be a passionate marketer who effectively integrates my personality strength—emotional intelligence—into my work. Emotion and passion will remain the central pillars guiding me in whatever I undertake.
Post-Hire Aspirations
“The third act of my life—sports marketing is my path.”
They say people typically encounter three major opportunities in life. For me, two of those opportunities have already arrived, and I write this as I prepare for the final one yet to come.
The first opportunity came during my university years. Getting accepted into a physical education college allowed me to formally study the field I had long dreamed of, and this was a crucial turning point that solidified my career path. The second opportunity came unexpectedly during a period of physical hardship. While recovering, I stumbled upon a newly established ‘Sports Marketing’ major at graduate school. This opened my eyes to a new field beyond physical education: marketing. Though my body paused temporarily, my life began moving forward once more.
And now, a third opportunity lies before me. As I chose this new path in marketing, the place I first and most earnestly dreamed of was your company. For me, your company is not merely a ‘company I want to join’; it is the center and starting point of my life goal to grow as a sports marketing expert.
Marketing is not merely about promoting products. True marketing deeply permeates various sectors of society, requires understanding each field’s characteristics and trends, and must move consumers’ hearts. While fields like hospital marketing and education marketing exist, I feel the greatest passion for sports marketing and possess the determination to grow as an expert in this field.
My belief is that once a path is chosen, one must give their utmost effort until the end. To make ‘marketing’ my true life’s path, I am constantly striving to become a professional equipped with both practical expertise and strategic acumen, building upon my accumulated understanding of physical education and sports. As an extension of this journey, if I could begin my third act on the premier stage of Cheil Worldwide, nothing would bring me greater joy and gratitude.
If your company extends a warm hand to share in my joy, I will repay that trust with the capability and attitude to meet your expectations. I will do my utmost to convince you that I am the person who can significantly expand your company’s value and potential in the field of sports marketing.
