How to persuasively convey a journalist’s sense of mission in a cover letter?

This blog post introduces how to persuasively convey a journalist’s sense of mission in a cover letter, focusing on experience and values.

My Upbringing

Growing up, my uncle was always my ideal role model and the adult I aspired to be like. Whenever a new incident or accident occurred, he was the first to rush to the scene and respond proactively. My mother often scolded him, saying, “How will you ever get married living like that?” with his irregular lifestyle, but I found his life even more admirable. His dedication and passion for what he loved, despite living to a different rhythm than others, struck me as profoundly impressive and appealing, especially coming from someone like me who followed a regular routine. Unlike me, who woke up early for school and ate meals with my family at set times, my uncle slept until evening after finishing deadlines or skipped meals. Physically, his life clearly looked exhausting, but his eyes always sparkled with passion and vitality. I found myself admiring that kind of life.
The desire to become a journalist like my uncle was a dream I held even before I fully understood what the job entailed. Even in my childhood, when I didn’t fully grasp how he worked or what role he played in society, my uncle was simply the embodiment of a cool adult I wanted to emulate. To me, being a journalist meant more than just a job; perhaps it was my uncle’s very presence that gave the title “journalist” its luster. At first, my uncle dismissed my dream as mere childish whimsy, often asking with a playful smile, “You really want to be a journalist?” But as time passed and I never let go of that dream, eventually showing enough passion to major in a related field, he apologized for not recognizing my sincerity sooner. He told me he was proud of me.
Ultimately, my career path began with the desire to follow the life of the adult I most wanted to emulate. The fact that someone’s life could determine a child’s direction was profoundly resonant, and that resonance remains an important compass in my life to this day.

School Days

Even when I was too young to know what a journalist actually did, I would always answer without hesitation, “Journalist!” whenever asked about my future aspirations. It was a dream born from a vague admiration—it seemed cool, and it was a profession where you could speak confidently in front of people. Back then, just saying the word “journalist” earned me praise from adults and comments like “How admirable!” so I took that dream for granted. But as I grew older and gradually grasped the realities of society, I slowly realized that becoming a journalist was a practical goal that couldn’t be achieved by mere admiration alone. I came to understand that becoming a journalist required thorough preparation, consistent study, and above all, a clear vision and strategy.
From that point on, I began formulating concrete plans to transform my dream of becoming a journalist from mere admiration into a realistic career path. Whenever I felt tired or discouraged, I always recalled my uncle’s figure. His quiet dedication to his calling, tackling socially significant issues, always left a deep impression on me. His earnest gaze, responsible demeanor, and the passion for truth evident in his sometimes forceful writing resonated strongly with me. I naturally superimposed my own face onto his image, using it to steady myself. I dreamed of becoming a journalist like him someday, contributing to society through meaningful articles.
At first, my parents dismissed my dream as a mere childhood whim. But as they witnessed my growing determination and effort, their perspective gradually shifted. Eventually, they began supporting my dream even more enthusiastically than I did myself. Knowing better than anyone that the path to becoming a journalist requires more than just passion, my parents generously provided me with all kinds of information and opportunities to help me advance more vigorously toward that dream. Their steadfast support and cooperation became a great strength to me, allowing me to design my career path more concretely and proactively.
During that time, I seriously contemplated which university I should attend to become a journalist, what experiences I needed to gain in which department, and I prepared each day by carefully considering the articles I would write, the achievements I wanted to accomplish, and ultimately, what kind of journalist I wanted to be remembered as. The intense visions I painted of my future back then intersect with my present life in many ways. The fact that those worries and resolutions became the solid foundation shaping who I am today still makes my heart flutter.
Looking back now, I was still an imperfect, unfinished person back then, but at the same time, I was someone dreaming of the future with the most sincere passion. And that passion still lives and breathes within me; I believe it will continue to be a vital driving force moving me forward.

Personality Introduction

I am someone who constantly strives, holding onto a mindset that while I must never lose my respect for an ideal role model, I must also one day surpass that level. Since childhood, I deeply respected my uncle, who was a journalist, and naturally resolved to walk the same path. However, I felt that simply dwelling on the emotion of ‘respect’ was insufficient. I believe true respect is achieved by learning from that person and ultimately striving to surpass them. To me, my uncle is not merely an ideal model; he is a goal I must one day surpass through my own efforts, a proof of my own growth. By doing so, I believe I can show the world the greatest respect I can offer him and prove the worth of the time I have dedicated to my own efforts.
When first treading an unfamiliar path, it is necessary to follow in the footsteps of those who walked it before. However, once you have mastered that path, I believe you can only become a traveler walking your own independent path when you are able to overtake those who went before. This belief has been my internal motivation, driving me to always set clear goals and strive relentlessly to surpass them. My uncle, who guided me onto my current career path, has built a distinguished career as a journalist over many years, eventually rising to the responsible position of editor-in-chief. Compared to him, I am merely a novice just stepping onto the starting line. Yet, I aspire to become someone who can one day be remembered as an ideal role model for others.
Though my beginnings may be humble now, I hold the dream of growing into a journalist who can one day make a greater impact. Just as a newly hatched chick will one day become a proud rooster spreading its wings, I too will diligently learn and grow strong, striving to turn that dream into reality. I believe that forging my own path is the true way to honor those who have been my role models, and it is my own way of following in their footsteps.

Values

I aspire to be someone who conveys a clear will to the world through my own voice. Just as each person has a unique tone of voice, speaking pace, and habitual expressions, I believe writing is another distinct voice that clearly reveals one’s individuality. Writing articles goes beyond merely conveying news; it is a continuous process of choosing and deciding how to raise one’s own voice, from what perspective to address the world. This is not about compromising with reality or passing things off safely; it is about steadily realizing, through writing, the direction one believes to be ideal. In that sense, I believe one only truly becomes a ‘journalist’ when they can clearly reveal their own color.
I, too, once had a tendency to emulate my uncle’s style out of admiration for him. However, as time passed, I came to realize that settling into his approach would never allow me to surpass him; rather, it could hinder my search for my own path. Since then, instead of imitating someone else’s voice, I have strived to contemplate the form of the ideal voice I envision, stimulating and encouraging my own will. The process hasn’t always been easy, but what’s clear is that the journey itself to find my voice has become a crucial foundation for solidifying my identity as a journalist.
Ultimately, finding my own voice means facing the world with my own language, uninfluenced by others’ methods, and writing with clear direction and responsibility within that framework. Moving forward, I want to keep this inner resolve and advance with an even stronger voice.

Reasons for Applying and Aspirations After Joining

Since childhood, I have always admired and looked up to my uncle as a role model. I have cultivated both the desire to follow in his footsteps and the resolve to surpass that path and reach even greater heights. My uncle currently serves as the editor-in-chief at another newspaper, but it was your company where he began his career as a reporter. His experience at your company became the starting point of his life’s journey. This is why I sincerely wish to begin my own journey from the same starting line, and it is with this heartfelt desire that I apply to your company. While following the path my uncle has walked, I am determined to add my own footprints upon it and strive to surpass his achievements.
If I am fortunate enough to begin my career at your company, I will not merely adapt to and become accustomed to the tasks assigned. I will focus on accelerating my growth by driving myself harder, setting my respected uncle as my personal rival in my heart. I am prepared to strive relentlessly and race fiercely to reach the heights he has attained even faster. Of course, I may currently be nothing more than an inexperienced and immature ‘beginner’. However, I firmly believe that how quickly one sheds those youthful shortcomings and leaps into becoming a true professional ultimately depends on individual effort and attitude. Based on this conviction, I aim to learn and grow faster than anyone else, walking my own path with full responsibility and passion as a member of your company.
I sincerely hope that my first step with your company becomes the starting point where I prove the resolve I have long prepared.
