Transitioning from Sales Support to Field Sales: How to Address It in Your Cover Letter?

This blog post introduces how an applicant with diverse experience spanning sales support to field sales can persuasively convey practical skills and global awareness in a trade/international sales cover letter.

Growth Process

I grew up in a home filled with positive energy. My parents never lost their ability to find joy and gratitude in even the smallest things, and thanks to them, I too learned to live each day feeling joy and gratitude in everything. When the family gathered, conversation flowed naturally, and our home was always overflowing with warm energy. From a young age, I would follow my mother around every day after school, telling her about my day. Each time, she listened with a kind smile, always considering what lessons I could learn from the day’s events. Thanks to her, I developed the habit of deep reflection and cultivated a considerate heart.
My father was a bit gruff, but I always felt his deep love in his words and actions. No matter how tired or busy his schedule, he would come pick me up if I finished tutoring late, and he would even meet me at the airport when I returned from trips with friends. Outwardly calm but warm-hearted, he always did his utmost for our family. During family gatherings, he was mostly a listener, but once he started talking, he would share stories so amusing they would surprise even Grandma, always bringing laughter.
Watching my father, I learned the responsibility and deep love required of a head of the household. Growing up, I resolved that even when I started my own family, I would become a warm and responsible person like him. My father poured his passion into his company throughout his life, grounded in sincerity and responsibility, and at home, he always prioritized his family above all else. Seeing him like this helped me set the direction for my own life; he became like a compass guiding me through my journey.
Growing up in such a positive and loving home environment allowed me to develop a grateful heart and a considerate nature. The love and guidance my parents gave me will remain vital life principles, no matter what situations I face in the future.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I consider diligence and a strong sense of responsibility my greatest strengths. I always give my utmost effort to any task entrusted to me, valuing the importance of handling it responsibly and conscientiously. This disposition was something I naturally learned while respecting my father. He demonstrated this by always taking responsibility seriously, even for small matters, and approaching them with diligence. I have always strived to follow that value, just like my father, and as a result, the attitude of taking responsibility and seeing any task through to the end has become second nature to me. Performing assigned tasks diligently, regardless of their size, has become a fundamental and important principle for me. Furthermore, the experience and know-how gained in the process have not only helped me complete a single task but also cultivated the ability to utilize and apply them effectively in other tasks.
Another strength of mine naturally emerges in my relationships with others. While I am generally quiet and reserved, once I open up, I am good at telling stories that make people laugh. This sense of humor is something I learned a lot from conversations with my father during my childhood. He always shared stories that made those around him laugh, and thanks to that, I naturally developed the ability to create a pleasant atmosphere for people. People around me often say they enjoy being with me, and that’s why I’ve always had many friends. Thanks to this sociability, I can quickly become close with diverse people and maintain positive relationships.
Ultimately, the strengths of my personality are my sincere and responsible attitude, and my ability to maintain pleasant and enjoyable relationships with others. These two traits play a significant role in my life and have been a great help in various situations.

School Life

During my university years, I passionately pursued self-development as a key goal. Starting in my freshman year, I consistently prepared for certifications, earning qualifications like the Level 1 Word Processor and Level 2 Computerized Accounting. I also developed the habit of starting each day with an hour of English study. This period taught me the importance of self-management and perseverance, extending beyond simply obtaining certifications. Furthermore, after completing my military service and returning to school as a junior, I was elected as the student council president for my department. I believed that building relationships and learning to manage an organization were just as important as academics. Through interacting with many people, I developed leadership and interpersonal skills while understanding and respecting their diverse backgrounds. This taught me how to communicate with and guide various individuals, and most importantly, it made me realize how crucial people-centered leadership is. These experiences allowed me to develop fundamental communication skills in human relationships and learn responsibility and consideration as a leader. All these experiences during my university years propelled me to the next level of growth and became invaluable groundwork for my professional life.

Career History

“Growing through voluntary contributions in the Sales Department.”
After graduating from university, I began my professional career at ○○ Trading Co., Ltd. I started in the Sales Support Department, handling document management and administrative assistant duties. My role encompassed managing all administrative tasks for the team, from drafting planning documents to shredding unnecessary files. Additionally, organizing and managing sales data and related materials for the sales department helped me understand the company’s operational flow. I also handled product orders, inventory management, and tax invoice issuance, gaining experience in core sales department functions. This allowed me to build a solid understanding of how the company’s critical operations functioned.
However, while working in sales support, I naturally came to appreciate the importance of the sales department. I realized that if sales weren’t running smoothly, it affected not only the company’s profits but also the work of every other department. I deeply understood that the sales department is the most crucial department in the company and truly felt how significantly the performance of the sales department impacts the entire company.
Of course, sales support work was also very meaningful and interesting, but my desire to work more proactively grew stronger. Therefore, in my second year, I applied for a department transfer and took on field sales responsibilities. While the desk-bound work was intense, the process of meeting customers directly and closing deals provided an incomparable sense of accomplishment. Within just two years as a salesperson, I achieved the company’s most outstanding results and had the honor of receiving an award from the CEO at year-end. This experience deeply instilled in me the importance of sales and the profound meaning of achieving such valuable results.
Thus, from my start in the sales support department, through my move to the sales division, and culminating in my achievements in field sales, I was able to continuously grow and develop. By giving my all and immersing myself in my work at every moment, I was able to accumulate increasingly valuable experiences and seize opportunities to grow alongside the company.

Study Abroad Experience

“The Independent Life I Dreamed Of”
During my university days, I had dreamed of living alone, but lacking financial means, I only dared to dream without taking the leap. It was an experience that left a lingering regret in the back of my mind. Even after starting my career, five years passed, and the dream of living abroad still remained in my heart. One day, while growing accustomed to routine life and putting that dream aside, I finally made up my mind. I decided to start the truly independent life I had always wanted. So, I boldly handed in my resignation and left for a year of language study in the UK. Thanks to a year of preparation, including attending English classes while working at the company, adapting to life there went more smoothly than I had expected.
Living alone brought both many advantages and disadvantages. Living alone abroad was far more liberating than I had ever imagined, and at times, I truly savored the thrill of standing on my own two feet. Conversely, there was loneliness, and occasionally, I longed for the warm embrace of family and friends back in Korea. Despite this, the experience provided me with profound insights. I came to deeply appreciate the preciousness of family and the immense comfort that comes from having loved ones by your side. Living alone allowed me to seriously reflect on emotions I hadn’t fully recognized before.
Yet, what I gained from this experience was invaluable, beyond comparison. I developed not only language skills but also confidence and independent thinking. Most importantly, I felt a deep sense of pride in myself for making a major decision and seeing it through. This language study program wasn’t just about learning a language; it was a process of redefining the direction I truly wanted my life to take.
Ultimately, this experience of realizing my dream of independent living provided me with many lessons and opportunities for growth. I can confidently say it was a choice I have no regrets about. This year’s experience will serve as important groundwork for the path I take moving forward.
