If you’re preparing to enter the teaching profession, how should you structure your academic plan for an education major?

This blog post examines the effective writing strategies for students preparing for teaching careers, specifically focusing on how to structure an academic plan for an education major. It details how to naturally connect your motivation for pursuing the field, your academic goals, and your vision for teaching.

Motivation for Pursuing the Field (Reason for Choosing the Major)

Back in elementary school, I often found myself teaching subjects I was confident in to my friends. Friends who had no interest in learning began to find studying enjoyable through me, and their grades started to improve. Seeing that, I thought teaching was incredibly cool and fun. Especially during presentation classes that friends dreaded, I began to feel confident that teaching suited me by conducting lessons myself through various attempts—like using overhead projectors, incorporating comics I drew myself, or employing discussion-based or quiz-style lessons. That’s why the “future aspirations” section of my school records has always been filled with “educator” by both students and parents.
My goal is unwavering, so I believed that to become a good teacher, I must first receive a quality education myself. Since ○○ University is clearly one of the top schools in the country, I had no hesitation in applying to your institution. I hope to take the first step toward my long-cherished goal of becoming a teacher at your university. I am confident I can grow into an excellent teacher.

Academic Plan and Goals

Since my first year of high school, I have consistently researched materials related to advanced education systems abroad and the realities of our own educational landscape. Frequent changes in education policy, which often lack direction, have led to significant dissatisfaction among students, parents, and teachers alike. Countless students obsess over entrance exams without considering their talents or aptitudes. Previously, I was selected for a scholarship program by the Central Education and Admissions Research Institute, joining an Ivy League university tour group. I visited eight major universities in the US Northeast over seven nights and eight days, including Harvard, Princeton, and MIT, engaging in many conversations with local international students. What impressed me most was seeing Harvard students intensely focused on their studies even in the dining hall. The reason they approached their studies with happiness was that they were pursuing subjects aligned with their aptitudes, which struck me as quite significant.
That experience made me resolve to work towards improving the education system in a way that satisfies teachers, students, and parents alike. My plan and goal is not to be satisfied merely with teaching, but to explore ways to reform our nation’s education system. To achieve this, I believe native-level English proficiency is essential, so I plan to diligently study the language. English is not merely a conversational skill but a tool for accessing vast amounts of information.
Additionally, I want to provide learning opportunities through talent sharing to children from difficult home environments who struggle to access quality education. Teaching children brings me great joy, and such volunteer work will also be valuable experience for me as a prospective teacher.

Post-Graduation Plans

After graduating from university, I plan to become a teacher as soon as possible. Designing diverse lesson formats is almost like a hobby for me. Therefore, I am eager to meet children and observe their reactions through lessons as soon as I can.
Once I become a teacher, I plan to constantly research how to convey knowledge more effectively to children and how to spark their interest. Furthermore, my aspiration is to nurture and encourage each child’s unique aptitudes and witness their growth. I intend to spend as much time as possible with them, listening attentively. Additionally, I will make time to visit outstanding schools in advanced countries. I will constantly explore how their educational environments differ from ours and what we can learn, striving to be an ever-learning teacher.
I believe teachers, more than anyone, must never stand still. To meet children at their level, we must move faster than anyone else and understand their emotions. Furthermore, regarding the issue of improving Korea’s education system, which I have always pondered, I am prepared to pursue graduate studies if necessary. I will be a teacher who constantly researches concrete improvement plans and what is the best approach within Korea’s current reality.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

I believe my dream of becoming a teacher stems from my constant desire to learn and my enjoyment of learning itself. During my school years, I sought to learn about life through various experiences: rural volunteer work, participating in youth open schools, and joining reading trips. I also immersed myself in cultural activities—theater, art, film, reading—regardless of genre, all driven by a desire to see, hear, and learn.
The Analects state, ‘Those who merely know are not as good as those who love, and those who love are not as good as those who enjoy.’ Throughout high school, I studied entirely on my own, never attending cram schools or private tutoring. I believe I consistently maintained top grades while studying alone because I genuinely enjoyed learning itself. This intellectual curiosity instilled in me the habit of listening to and incorporating others’ opinions. I attribute winning the Grand Prize and the top award in the debate category at the ‘National High School Speech and Debate Competition’ for two consecutive years to this deeply ingrained habit of thoughtful consideration.
