This blog post examines the core research direction and academic vision a Korean Language graduate school statement of purpose must possess, focusing specifically on the elements applicants should emphasize.
Motivation for Pursuing Graduate Studies (Reason for Choosing the Major)
My career path was naturally determined upon encountering your institution’s curriculum, which fosters educational practice based on human bonds between professors and students while conducting scholarly research in Korean studies that contributes to the advancement of the humanities. Through your graduate program, I aim to deepen my systematic understanding of the Korean language and Korean classical and modern literature, thereby building a more sophisticated academic foundation.
My aspiration to grow into a professional researcher possessing analytical skills and creative thinking in language and literature is closely linked to the ability to critically understand human life forms and cultural symbols. Furthermore, I applied to your university to become a talent capable of contributing to the inheritance and recreation of our national language and traditional culture. Although your university’s Korean Language Department does not have a long history, the very low student-to-faculty ratio enabling high-quality education was also a significant reason for my choice.
Primary Research Interests and Research Plan
During my undergraduate studies, I participated as a researcher in an international academic conference on ‘Korean Language Education and Assessment’. Through this, I explored in detail what issues academia should consider for the advancement of Korean language education and the direction it should take in the future. In the process, I deeply realized that Korean language education is an applied field while simultaneously being an area where interdisciplinary collaboration with various adjacent disciplines is essential. In other words, I came to understand that an attitude of understanding and practicing related subfields and adjacent disciplines “broadly and deeply” is paramount.
In my doctoral studies, I aim to scientifically and systematically research the transformations undergone by the ethnic sentiments and symbolic systems embedded within the Korean language. Furthermore, by analyzing and critiquing literary works that embody the spirit and thought of our people, I wish to contribute to the proper establishment of the consciousness world formed by the Korean language and Korean literature.
Your university’s approach of concurrently pursuing pure and applied scholarship aligns precisely with my research goals. Beyond traditional theory-centered language education, I aspire to grow into a creative and competitive researcher within your institution’s curriculum, which actively explores the practicality of the Korean language and the social advancement opportunities for majors.
Plans after the Master’s Program
I intend to continue my passion for scholarship and pursue a career as a researcher. My goal is to become a creative scholar of Korean language and culture, possessing both intellectual prowess and moral character. I aspire to play a role in establishing and disseminating an intellectual foundation for Korean language and culture suited to the era of globalization and informatization, thereby contributing to enhancing the international impact of Korean language research.
To this end, I will strengthen my ability to practically examine and critically analyze diverse phenomena in language, literature, and culture. Simultaneously, I aim to harmonize traditional academic theories with the latest research methodologies to develop the scientific thinking and systematic methodologies required in Korean language, literature, and cultural studies.
A gemstone only shines when polished. My aspiration to constantly refine myself will, I believe, shine even more brightly at your esteemed institution, which can meticulously hone my capabilities. I intend to faithfully pursue my path as a scholar at your university.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
There is a saying: “I grieve for the mad life.” This phrase, meaning to dedicate one’s entire heart and body to fulfilling one’s given mission, is the motto at the core of my life. I keep this spirit close to my heart, living each day with the resolve to never back down from any task.
During my university years, participating in rural volunteer activities deepened my understanding of the true meaning of service and naturally cultivated an attitude of active engagement in all matters. Furthermore, I have made it a principle of life to stay true to the fundamentals and approach everything with sincerity, keeping in mind the phrase, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” In competitive situations, I never back down easily; instead, I strive to achieve my goals through persistent challenges and strong drive. This attitude is also the way of life I aspire to.
