In this blog post, I will summarize and share my high school academic experiences and extracurricular activities, examples of my acts of consideration and generosity, as well as my motivation for applying to the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Kwangwoon University and my future career plans.

Academic Experiences and Reflections

While in high school, I identified problems with the school’s ability-based remedial classes, proposed improvements, and actively participated in implementing them. At the time, these classes—focused on core subjects—were scheduled from the 7th to the 9th periods, with students divided into Classes A, B, and C. However, since students were grouped solely based on their grades, there were significant disparities in progress and understanding even within the same class, rendering the “ability-based” concept meaningless.
I felt that if this situation continued, students would become dissatisfied with public education and turn to private tutoring, so I decided to submit a proposal aimed at enhancing the system’s effectiveness. Specifically, I suggested conducting a survey to identify the specific topics students found difficult—not just the overall level of each subject—and incorporating those findings into the curriculum. For example, in mathematics, the idea was to determine which unit—calculus, functions, or statistics—students found most challenging and allow them to attend classes focused on their specific weaknesses.
Many students and teachers agreed with my proposal, and unit-specific remedial classes were introduced starting the following semester. As a result, students were able to address their weaknesses, and the school was able to increase satisfaction with the classes. I also gained the opportunity to study the units I struggled with in greater depth, which led to a significant improvement in my grades. The experience of identifying a problem and driving systemic improvements helped me develop initiative and practical problem-solving skills.

Major School Activities and Reflections

As class president for the Korean language class, I played a meaningful role in managing class operations and supporting my classmates’ learning. I naturally became class president because I was interested in Korean language classes—including rhetoric, reading, and writing—and I was responsible for preparing materials and facilitating discussion, speech, and interview practice assignments.
Since many of the practical assignments involved video production, I was tasked with filming using a camcorder, editing the footage, and sharing the files on the online bulletin board. Because these assignments directly impacted our grades, I approached the filming and editing with a strong sense of responsibility, thereby contributing to the improvement of the course quality. In debate classes, I selected topics, served as the moderator, and learned how to coordinate and mediate discussions.
To prepare for the public speaking class, I created various materials to help my classmates improve their presentation skills. In particular, to support students who struggled with debates, I edited and screened a segment from ‘The King’s Speech’—which showcases a character overcoming speech anxiety—to inspire their motivation to succeed. Believing that growing together with my peers is more meaningful than simply improving my own grades, I actively shared my skills to support my classmates’ learning.
Furthermore, through my involvement in the broadcasting club, I gained practical experience in media production and broadened the scope of my campus activities. I joined the broadcasting club through an audition; although I originally hoped to become a scriptwriter, I was initially eliminated from the competition and ended up participating as a DJ. Later, thanks to the consideration of a senior member, I was given the opportunity to write scripts, gaining experience in planning and producing various segments.

Examples of Consideration, Sharing, and Collaboration, and My Reflections

The segment I created for the broadcasting club, “Stories of Hope: Helping Neighbors in Need,” involved compiling and sharing stories submitted from both inside and outside the school to rally support. One day, a student sent in a story about a family struggling after a fire. As I read the story, I felt a deep sense of urgency and suggested that we collect donations after the broadcast.
After hearing my broadcast, many students asked how they could help, and the broadcasting club was able to collect and personally deliver the donations. Through this process, I realized firsthand that words and speech can connect people and inspire action, and I became convinced of the role media plays in fostering social solidarity. It was an experience that taught me the importance of empathy and taking action for others.
Throughout my campus activities, I deeply appreciated the value of collaboration. Through experiences such as coordinating opinions and taking responsibility for assigned roles while preparing for debates and presentations, I developed my mediation and communication skills, and I learned that helping my peers grow ultimately leads to shared achievements.

Efforts and Preparation Related to Motivation for Application and Career Plans

My motivation for applying to the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Kwangwoon University is to solidify my career path as a cultural content planner. Through my experience in the broadcasting club and production work, I became fascinated by the role of a lead writer who plans programs and writes scripts, and I concluded that a deep understanding of language and literature is essential for this career.
Through my major in Korean Language and Literature, I plan to build a solid foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and communication, and to accumulate the skills necessary for scriptwriting by extensively reading and analyzing novels, modern literature, and creative works. In particular, I believe that understanding the history of literature and the trends in modern literature will serve as a crucial foundation for planning content that reflects culture and society.
During my undergraduate studies, I will take media-related courses in conjunction with my major and participate in student clubs and practical projects to develop a practical sense of the field. Furthermore, through writing and creative writing exercises, I will hone my ability to transform ideas into scripts, and by analyzing works across various genres, I will accumulate themes and narratives that can be applied to content.
In the long term, I aim to grow into a cultural content planning expert who accurately understands our culture and creatively reimagines it, producing innovative content in the broadcasting and cultural industries. Building on the theoretical knowledge and practical experience I gain during my undergraduate studies, I hope to continue planning content that resonates with and communicates to people, thereby making a meaningful social impact.
