How to express your childhood dream of becoming a ‘builder’ in a construction job application letter?

This blog post introduces how to naturally and persuasively convey your childhood aspiration and sincere passion for construction in your application letter.

My Growth Process

As a child, my father, who worked on construction sites, was my idol. While I admired him conversing with clients in the office, it was his presence on-site—wearing a hardhat, directing numerous workers, and taking charge firsthand—that truly captivated me. He exuded a charisma that made my heart race. Though generally serious and gentle, he possessed a fiercely courageous nature when needed, like a tiger. I harbored the hope of one day growing into an adult like him—someone who could command others with a resonant voice. Unlike my relatively petite mother, my father’s physique—tall and imposing with a solid, muscular build—was also perfectly suited to be my role model.
In art class, when asked to draw someone I admired or a ‘hero,’ I invariably drew a tall, muscular man wearing a hard hat, such was the depth of my respect for my father. My father initially preferred I pursue an office job for greater comfort rather than field work like his own. However, once he recognized my immense drive, he began supporting me with tender care, encouraging my ambitions. He always took me along on his regular hikes or workouts, teaching me that maintaining proper posture and healthy habits would accelerate my growth and help me develop a physique as impressive as his. The memories of constantly striving to emulate him while by his side remain cherished memories for me even now. Moreover, these habits, unchanged to this day, continue to influence my present life.

School Life

It was a time when I constantly declared that I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a ‘house builder’. Back then, I didn’t fully understand the precise nature of my father’s work or its official title. But seeing the buildings and apartments he created through collaboration with others, I naturally concluded, ‘My father is a house builder!’ The amazement I felt when a building, which initially showed only piles of bricks, heaps of concrete, or bare steel frames, gradually took shape and acquired the familiar exterior we commonly see—this was something I witnessed often through my father, yet it never failed to make my heart race. It wasn’t like molding clay during craft time, where a huge mass is shaped and finished in a flash. I came to understand the importance of the process of building up from the ground up over many years.
Moreover, through my father’s philosophy, I came to understand that it wasn’t just the person leading the project who was admirable and extraordinary. Every single person on the construction site—carrying and stacking building materials, carefully trimming away the unnecessary parts—played an important and significant role. He taught me that a building, like a structure made of ninety-nine bricks stacked straight, can collapse from a single misplaced brick. Therefore, unless everyone strives steadily toward a common goal with careful attention, cooperation inevitably crumbles. This taught me that in many aspects of life, rather than charging ahead alone like a lone wolf, I must seek others’ help, request mutual cooperation, and work harmoniously to achieve more stable results. It became the foundation for me to avoid acting alone and instead walk in step with everyone.

Personality Introduction

I possess a personality that strives to lead from the forefront, always aiming to guide everyone from the center. Just as my father, when commanding the field, always took the vanguard position as the focal point capable of leading everyone, I too believe that to lead others, one must establish a position as a model and example for others. I understood well that being at the forefront for everyone requires more responsibility than one might think: stepping up courageously even when it’s not my task, sharing the load to help others with their share, and acting with inclusiveness so everyone can focus solely on their work. Just as leading others down an untested path with only a flashlight requires considerable courage, taking the lead to guide others demands an equal measure of responsibility and capability.
Therefore, I always carry a sense of duty: to go beyond my assigned role with an altruistic spirit, not fixating solely on my own tasks, but considering the circumstances of the diverse members within the group, adjusting the spacing of the line appropriately to ensure unity. If the line is tied too loosely and far apart, it becomes difficult to adjust so everyone moves in the same direction. Conversely, if it’s pulled too tightly and densely, movement becomes restricted, inevitably causing people to get tangled. This is precisely why the person leading the way requires such delicate control.

Values

Let us strive to build up even the smallest efforts of today with sincerity, so we can achieve grand goals. People often think that to achieve a grand, lifelong goal, each step must be a giant leap. But just as a sparrow cannot chase a crane, no matter how ambitious the goal, one’s abilities cannot increase overnight.
We must believe in our own potential to reach considerable heights someday, by advancing steadily without conscious effort, so we don’t suffer from excessive impatience that tears our legs apart. Human bodies are born with considerable innate weaknesses and immaturity. Therefore, to acquire the capabilities needed to reach our desired goals, we require sincere effort that allows for steady growth throughout our entire lives.

Reasons for Applying and Career Aspirations

My father, who could gently guide and embrace people with warmth yet unleash a tiger-like, courageous charisma to lead construction sites when needed, was an extraordinary man. From his imposing presence to his character, every aspect of him was an object of my admiration. Influenced by such a father, I naturally dreamed of working in the construction industry. My decision to entrust my future to your company—where my father served long-term until retirement—felt as natural as the flow of water, a desire as inevitable as the laws of the world.
If given the opportunity to join forces with your company, as my father did before me, I intend to approach my work with the resolve to both carry on his legacy and, at the same time, strive to achieve even greater results. My father was the most outstanding role model in my life, but I know I cannot overcome my admiration by merely gazing at his back from afar. I will never cease striving to marvel at the grandeur of the wall he built over his lifetime, observe it meticulously, and devise ways to demonstrate qualities that surpass his own.
