What should new graduates and experienced candidates emphasize in their cover letters when applying for overseas branch management positions?

This blog post introduces strategies for tailoring your cover letter to highlight your unique strengths, whether you’re a new graduate or an experienced professional, when applying for overseas branch management roles.

Personal Growth

“Differences create competitive advantage.”
I instinctively understood from a young age that being just like everyone else wouldn’t win in competition. Seeing a friend wearing the same clothes, using the same items as others, or submitting an assignment indistinguishable from my peers made me feel something was lacking. While clothes could be changed and identical items avoided, creating distinction in grades or achievements always required my own unique approach. To find that one distinguishing point, that unique edge, I always thought a little harder and worked a little harder than others, striving for my achievements to be recognized as special. This competitive spirit and effort naturally translated into results, and I believe these accumulated aspects, one by one, shaped who I am today.

School Days

“You can’t change by doing the same things.”
I think I had a strong desire to live differently from others. The thought of trying something different always came first, and I wanted to try something tangible. That’s why I joined the mime club. The idea of expressing my emotions and conveying them to others through my body, rather than words or writing, felt appealing. And as I learned mime and experienced the stage, I think I also learned what it truly means to stand under the spotlight. The process of learning mime was fascinating, and performing on stage gave me new experiences. But above all, I feel like mime gave me another channel to communicate with people. Even now, I think it was an excellent choice. Also, during high school, I served as a student council officer. With my unique passion, I made the school festival and sports day more vibrant than ever before, drawing enthusiastic responses not only from students but also from teachers. These were annual events with set programs, but I put extra thought and effort into them. Though it was more work, I developed new programs and sought outside help. Since these events were happening anyway, I structured them to be more fun and conceptually engaging. This approach yielded great results, and I felt a strong sense of accomplishment from the process.
“The extraordinary act of rethinking my path through backpacking”
Feeling stifled by the pressure to attend university in Korea, I discussed it with my parents and decided to go backpacking during high school. My strong determination was the key factor in making this difficult decision. After a month of preparation, I explained to my parents how I would travel and what outcomes I hoped to achieve. Though initially very worried, they recognized the seriousness of my resolve upon seeing my detailed plan and gave their permission. Through this 40-day backpacking trip during my vacation, I truly realized I was just a frog in a well. It made me want to pursue opportunities not confined to a single country, but aimed at the global market, no matter what happened. Furthermore, traveling alone for the first time and making friends one by one in each country, regardless of age or nationality, became a crucial turning point that broadened and expanded my perspective. After returning from my trip, I decided I wanted to make this experience more tangible, leading me to choose studying abroad. My life as an international student in Canada was actually on a different level from traveling. It marked the start of a new chapter of life, distinct from simply experiencing cultures and meeting people through travel. However, thanks to my natural adaptability and sociability, I was able to make many friends both within the Korean community and in the local community through various volunteer activities. This helped me adapt quickly to life in Canada.

Strengths and Weaknesses

“The Difference Made by Habits of Preparation and Verification”
Because I always feel the need to have something that sets me apart, I tend to be extremely thorough in my preparation, whether it’s for work or meeting people. If I’m unprepared, I feel anxious myself, and I believe I cannot create the ‘difference’ I always emphasize. This tendency is truly helpful in my work and becomes a significant competitive advantage for me, whether in meetings or during important presentations. However, constantly trying to maintain this attitude often leaves me internally conflicted and prone to self-torment. Once I start a task, I focus solely on it until completion, leading others to worry I’m pushing myself too hard. Yet I see this as both my strength and distinguishing feature, believing the resulting challenges are a necessary trade-off to highlight these qualities.

Career Experience (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)

At ○○ Company, I am currently responsible for tasks related to establishing a 20-year branch office, including local government liaison, registering and obtaining various business licenses, leasing the branch office and vehicles, accounting duties, visa issuance, and obtaining CNIA and medical cards. Since these were not routine tasks but challenges specific to new establishment, I gained business knowledge and know-how equivalent to starting a business from scratch. While initially daunting to handle such a broad range of startup processes across diverse fields, the saying “help yourself and you’ll be helped” proved true. Through this experience, I developed expertise and found solutions to many challenges.
At ○○ Company, I handled on-site management tasks including overseas personnel selection (trips to the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam), labor management (payroll, living arrangements, welfare), and material management (customs clearance, local procurement, inventory control). Working primarily through language allowed me to grasp most overall business areas comprehensively. This was my first opportunity to engage in project-based work beyond translation and interpretation, making it a particularly meaningful experience for me.
At ○○ Company, I supported language-related tasks as a newcomer: translation/interpretation, translating various official documents, translating contracts and speech materials, drafting English official documents, interpreting at client meetings, preparing English presentations for construction plans, and interpreting during overseas business trips. While these were mostly fragmented translation/interpretation tasks, they laid the foundation for successfully handling business-related work later.

Motivation and Aspirations

Through years of living abroad, I have developed a quick ability to absorb diverse cultures. Moreover, through a recent branch office establishment project, I gained a precise understanding of how new businesses are created and established in new territories. Furthermore, guided by my belief that being like others leads nowhere, I possess a commitment to excellence and differentiation. This means that even when performing routine tasks, I take the extra step to research, exert effort, and meticulously double-check, ensuring thoroughness and distinction. Furthermore, I believe my language proficiency—fundamental for overseas business—along with various translation, interpretation, and contract work from previous roles, has served as a solid foundation for expanding and broadening my professional capabilities. Based on the competencies I have built thus far, I am confident I can be a significant asset to diverse new ventures and your company’s global business expansion. I will approach my work with a mindset of working harder than anyone else, giving my absolute best to achieve not only personal success but also team and company success, while enhancing job satisfaction.
