Model Example of an Academic Plan for a Student Dreaming of Becoming an Architect

This blog post examines the writing method and structure of an academic plan through an actual example written by a student aspiring to become an architect.

Reasons for Pursuing This Major

I have been exceptionally interested in architecture since childhood. Thanks to my father, who works in civil engineering and construction, I naturally grew up close to the field of ‘architecture,’ which felt very familiar and welcoming to me. While my peers enjoyed comic books or teen magazines, I grew up devouring architecture-related books and journals. I wasn’t merely drawn to eye-catching exteriors or the beauty of design; rather, I was captivated by the diversity and originality of buildings, each with their own distinct styles across different countries and cities, and the history and philosophy embedded within them.
As time passed, my interest began to crystallize. I started asking myself questions like: How can a space convey a more majestic impression? What form allows light to permeate most effectively? What characteristics make a space feel comfortable to people? These reflections naturally led to a deep fascination with ‘architectural design’.
I believe architecture is not merely the technology of building structures, but rather the ‘art of space’ that embodies people’s lives and emotions. Therefore, I firmly believe that the curiosity and passion for architecture I’ve nurtured since childhood are the driving force bringing me one step closer to my dream of becoming an architectural designer. Beyond simple interest, I have become convinced that I want to design my future career and entire life alongside the field of architecture.
As the first step toward realizing this dream, I am applying to your university’s Department of Architectural Engineering. I expect that your systematic and professional curriculum, along with diverse hands-on and project-based classes, will cultivate practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. I am confident your university offers the most ideal environment for developing and practically realizing my potential.
Moving forward, I aspire to be an architect who continuously learns and grows along the path of architecture, designing spaces that enrich and beautify people’s lives. I sincerely hope that this journey, born from my passion for architecture, becomes a reality through my academic journey at your university.

Academic Plan and Goals

If I am admitted to your university, I intend to diligently complete the curriculum and build a solid foundation to achieve my dream of becoming an architectural designer. As this marks my first step toward my major, I plan to focus on foundational studies during my freshman year. I believe a solid foundation is essential for subsequent applied learning and independent research. I firmly believe that building strong fundamentals is the most crucial starting point in any field.
During my sophomore and junior years, I will concentrate on developing practical skills to cultivate my expertise. I plan to develop fundamental design capabilities in architecture, acquire various practical certifications required for the field, and hone my technical skills. Specifically, I will obtain essential CAD/CAM certifications, master 2D drafting and 3D modeling using AutoCAD, learn AUTOLISP programming, and develop proficiency in graphic tools like Photoshop. This comprehensive skill set will prepare me to enter diverse fields. I believe these technical competencies are key elements in enhancing my competitiveness as an architectural designer.
The field of architecture values cultural sensibility and an international perspective just as much as technical skill. Around the world, buildings embody long histories and cultures, each reflecting their era, region, and culture, thereby enriching the discipline of architecture. Therefore, I plan to use my vacation time to visit and experience renowned architectural works both domestically and internationally. By seeing and feeling these sites firsthand, I aim to gain vivid insights difficult to obtain through books or lectures alone. I expect this experience will broaden my horizons and provide a richer perspective for my future design work.
In my senior year, I will embark on practical career planning based on the knowledge and experience I have accumulated thus far. To be immediately employable after graduation, I will dedicate myself fully to school projects and practical training, diligently preparing to become a professional. With the specific goal of becoming an architectural designer, I will strive to grow not only academically but also into a talent equipped with practical expertise and skill.

Post-Graduation Plans

After graduating from university, I plan to focus immediately on gaining practical experience. I intend to obtain my Class 2 Architectural Engineer license upon graduation to minimize the time needed for job preparation and thoroughly prepare myself to quickly enter the field.
Since childhood, I have nurtured my dream of becoming an architecture student by imagining and sketching my own spaces in my mind. Now, to turn that dream into reality, I want to experience the construction site firsthand and learn various practical skills. With diligence and a fearless attitude, I will steadily build my own career. Based on this foundation, my ultimate goal is to become a top expert in the field of architectural design.
The architecture field has long emphasized the somewhat rough and physically demanding aspects of site work, naturally leading to its perception as a male-dominated profession. However, I firmly believe that the unique precision and meticulousness inherent to women align perfectly with the exacting standards and intricate details essential to architectural design.
I intend to fully utilize my capabilities and sensibilities to confidently establish my place as a female architectural designer. My aspiration extends beyond merely realizing my own dream; I also wish to become a positive influence for other women who dream of architecture, just as I do.
The path ahead will certainly not be easy, but I will advance step by step with diligence, growing into a professional with my own distinct color within the world of architecture.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

I often reflect on how fortunate it is to have someone worthy of respect by my side as I live my life. Having someone to respect means having someone I aspire to emulate, and that person becomes a reference point that helps me regain my center whenever the direction of my life wavers.
Fortunately, I have such a reference point in my life. That person is my father.
My father always said, “Actions speak louder than words,” and he lived by that principle. He didn’t just emphasize it verbally; he always took proactive action and led by example. That attitude naturally left a deep impression on me. My father’s life itself was a lesson, and thanks to him, I was able to form my own attitude towards life and my values.
The greatest value I learned from my father is the ‘courage to act.’ I, too, developed the tenacity and perseverance to see things through once I set my mind to them. I choose to confront challenges head-on rather than spend time worrying or hesitating. Of course, not every outcome leads to success, but the belief that nothing can be gained without action drives me forward.
This proactive attitude and passion are my greatest assets in life, and I am certain they will remain vital driving forces as I navigate the future. And all these attitudes and values stem from the way of life I learned through my father.
I believe everyone needs at least one guiding compass to steer their life’s course. For me, that compass was my father, and I intend to walk my own path firmly, never forgetting his teachings.
