How can airline customer service experience be leveraged when applying for marketing roles?

This blog post explores how to effectively connect your airline customer service experience to marketing job applications and persuasively weave it into your resume.

Growth Journey

“I always took charge of presentations since my school days.”
During high school, I attended an international high school where I experienced various presentation and debate classes. Due to the school’s nature, many classes were conducted in foreign languages, with a significant emphasis on English and essay writing courses. In essay writing classes, we often chose topics in teams for discussions or divided roles for collaborative presentations. This process naturally fostered teamwork and communication skills while also developing the ability to organize and express thoughts in diverse ways.
The most memorable class was a presentation course focusing on refugee issues within the context of international conflicts and civil wars. In this class, each team member researched a subtopic, and the entire team collaborated to complete a single presentation. I was assigned the role of presenter. While it might seem like I simply ‘happened’ to get it, my teammates recommended me for the role, saying I was articulate and well-suited for presenting. This recommendation made me feel a greater sense of responsibility. During preparation, I actively participated in creating presentation materials and conducting research. I wrote the presentation script myself and practiced multiple times to ensure the content was conveyed clearly to the audience.
Though I was very nervous inside at first, the feedback I received after the presentation was surprising. I was told my presentation was easy to follow and sounded completely natural, without any sign of nervousness. That was the first time I thought, ‘Ah, I have a talent for presenting.’ After that, I participated with greater confidence in classes or projects that involved presentations. It was the moment I realized preparing presentations and conveying my opinions in front of people suited me well.
These experiences crystallized the direction of my career path. I naturally became interested in roles like planner or marketer, where presentation and planning play crucial roles. To learn these professionally, I went abroad to study in North America after entering university. There, majoring in International Marketing allowed me to build both practical skills and theoretical knowledge simultaneously. Since graduating, I’ve been steadily progressing as a marketer. Presentation and communication remain core elements of my work today, and I firmly believe those student experiences shaped who I am now.

Career Experience

“Lessons Learned from My Experience in Korean Air’s Boarding Procedures Team”
Before applying to your company, I gained experience working in Korean Air’s Boarding Procedures Team. Korean Air was where I began my first professional role after graduating from university, initially handling simple administrative support tasks. The tasks I handled at the time were relatively straightforward: collecting customer registration information, managing immigration procedures, verifying flight schedules, and creating timetables. However, this experience provided me with a deep understanding of the airline’s overall boarding procedures system.
By diligently performing these administrative support duties, I gained a strong grasp of internal processes. This led to my subsequent transfer to another department, where I took on customer consultation responsibilities. Although I worked as a fixed-term contract employee, I actively sought to demonstrate my capabilities in the process of directly communicating with customers, receiving inquiries, and resolving issues. I focused on mastering various service programs for customer support and clearly explaining details. Particularly for inquiries from international customers, I proactively gathered information through diverse channels to quickly and easily provide desired routes, flight schedules, restaurant information, and more.
When information was insufficient, I assisted customers by personally researching materials to create restaurant maps or neatly organizing schedules for their convenience. I went beyond merely providing standard responses within set parameters, sparing no extra effort to ensure customer satisfaction. Through this process, I personally experienced that ‘there are no boundaries to service for customer satisfaction.’
Thus, my experience at Korean Air held meaning beyond mere job performance; it was a valuable time that cultivated a customer-centric mindset and problem-solving skills. Moving forward, I aim to leverage this experience to demonstrate an even more advanced service mindset.

International Sensibility and Core Competencies

“Sharing cultures while majoring in international marketing.”
I studied International Marketing at ○○ University in North America through an exchange program. Having already studied related subjects domestically, I adapted relatively quickly to the coursework. My language skills, developed before studying abroad, also allowed me to communicate with local students without major difficulties. However, beyond academics, unexpected challenges arose in the broader cultural exchange of daily life. Among the local students, there were communities naturally formed among friends who had grown up in similar cultural backgrounds, and blending into these groups was harder than I had anticipated.
To overcome this situation, I actively sought to experience the local culture and made efforts to socialize with diverse people. By consistently participating in cultural events and frequently attending parties where students of various nationalities gathered, I gradually began making new friends. As time passed, I progressed beyond simply absorbing culture to planning and executing a ‘Cultural Sharing Project’ where I introduced and shared Korean culture. Through this project, I learned not only to understand and respect foreign cultures but also how to communicate with others while introducing our own culture. Students who participated in the events naturally approached me, expressing interest in learning Korean or asking questions about Korean culture, leading to deeper exchanges.
These efforts to directly experience and share diverse cultures did more than simply enrich my study abroad experience; they became a catalyst for my personal growth into a person with a more open mindset and proactive attitude. Furthermore, I developed the ability to proactively build relationships and collaborate within an international environment. I believe this has laid the foundation for me to actively communicate and contribute in future global work settings.

Achievement Experience

“Participating in the Hi Seoul Festival Marketing as a Student Marketer”
During a brief return home for a break while studying abroad, I happened to see a recruitment notice for student marketers for the ‘Hi Seoul Festival’. Although enrolled at a foreign university, I still held student status, making me fully eligible to apply. Driven by the anticipation of gaining practical experience in event marketing, I applied without hesitation. I applied specifically for the stage planning and program marketing division. My submitted proposal was ultimately approved, allowing me to begin my official activities as a university student marketer.
The event operated with a preparation period of about three months. During this time, I continuously met with my selected team members to hold idea meetings and practical discussions. These meetings went beyond simple opinion exchanges; we collected and analyzed each other’s ideas to build our own database. Through this process, we strived to produce more strategic and effective outcomes.
Our team focused primarily on the stage planning segment of the festival. Building upon the initial proposal we submitted, we re-examined feasibility and detailed structure to concretize the project. Rather than simply staying within the given framework, we proactively suggested bold revisions when necessary and sought out areas for improvement. In this process, I primarily focused on discovering new ideas and evaluating their efficiency from a marketing perspective.
Naturally, given the large scale of the event, we didn’t handle overall operations; our team’s role was limited to specific programs. Nevertheless, witnessing the plans we created together being realized on stage and eliciting audience reactions gave me immense joy and a strong sense of accomplishment as ideas became reality. This experience, where I could fully unleash my creativity and planning skills, was a valuable time that meant more than just participation. It became a catalyst that gave me the confidence and motivation to take on various projects afterward.

Reasons for Applying and Aspirations

“I am applying for the marketing division of Korean Air’s transportation business.”
Immediately after completing my studies in North America, I naturally began preparing to pursue a career with an airline. Having majored in International Marketing and acquired sufficient language skills during my studies abroad, I believed I was qualified to apply for a position in an airline’s marketing team. However, the reality proved challenging, and I ended up starting my career in the Check-in Team, not the marketing division I had hoped for.
In the Check-in Team, I primarily interacted directly with customers at the airport, handling consultations and providing guidance for various inquiries. This process allowed me to develop practical skills essential for customer service and deepen my understanding of field-centric airline operations. I also came to realize that working on the front lines of the airline, facing customers, is more than just handling inquiries; it is a crucial role as the face of the company, directly conveying the brand image.
However, I had a clear career goal from the start: to build a career as a marketer. Specifically, I aspired to be responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies within the Cargo and Passenger Transportation divisions under the Passenger Business Headquarters, among Korean Air’s diverse operational departments. Having gained ample field experience over five years in the boarding procedures department, I am now applying as an experienced hire to the marketing division within Korean Air to advance toward my original goal. Although this is an internal department transfer within the same company, the structure of a large corporation necessitated applying as a new hire. I am preparing myself even more resolutely, as this is not merely a department change but a challenge into a new job domain.
I possess a deep understanding of North American, U.S., and Northern European routes, along with strong knowledge of customer needs and cultural characteristics in these regions. Should I be assigned to marketing tasks focused on these routes, I am confident I can contribute to enhancing your company’s brand competitiveness through strategic planning and execution tailored to each route’s unique characteristics and demand.
Moving forward, I wish to grow as a marketer by viewing customers and markets from a more strategic perspective, building upon the practical experience and customer understanding I gained in the boarding procedures department. Simultaneously, I aim to cultivate expertise in international aviation marketing and contribute to strengthening Korean Air’s global competitiveness. With the mindset of starting anew in a fresh domain, using my existing experience as a foundation, I earnestly hope for the opportunity to grow alongside Korean Air.
