What should business majors emphasize in their cover letters for administrative support positions?

This blog post introduces how business majors can effectively showcase their major-related knowledge and practical skills in their cover letters when applying for administrative support roles.

Growth Process

During high school, I pursued both music and academics, aiming to enter a music college. I showed particular talent in piano and served as the choir conductor at school, winning the conducting award at the ○○ City Choir Competition. Back then, I was solely focused on music when planning my future.
However, just months before the entrance exams, I broke my right index finger in an accident, shattering all my plans. I could no longer take the piano performance exam, and my family and I, who had dreamed solely of music school, were plunged into a deep sense of loss.
I remained in despair for a while, but my parents’ words, “Now is the time to focus on something new,” helped me begin to gather my resolve. Coincidentally, my older sister was studying abroad in the US, and after deep contemplation, I decided to pursue my studies there as well.
However, my hand injury required more time to fully heal, and pursuing a music degree locally was also unrealistic. That’s when my sister recommended I major in business administration. Business was a field I had never considered, but with no other options at the time, I decided to take on the challenge.
At first, it felt unfamiliar and difficult, but as I studied business, I gradually began to find new interest. I, who had never shown interest in anything besides music, finally realized that there were many other fascinating and valuable fields in the world. Especially the field of ‘marketing,’ which moves consumers’ hearts, was a fresh revelation to me. The process of analyzing human behavior and emotions, and creating value through that, felt like another form of ‘art.’
Having previously focused narrowly on the single path of entering a music college, business studies broadened my horizons and allowed me to discover new possibilities within myself. This journey, which began amidst loss and frustration, became an even greater turning point in my life.
Looking back now, that accident was a fateful crossroads that led me down a different path, and on that path, I encountered another dream. If music nurtured my sensibilities, business administration was a new world of learning that propelled me to grow even further.

Discovering Business Administration and Marketing During School Days

During my school years, I became completely captivated by the appeal of business administration. Among its many facets, I developed a particular fascination with online marketing, which led me to dive straight into practical application. Together with five like-minded friends, I started taking on online marketing-related requests, creating websites or providing simple consulting services. As students, we initially approached it as simple part-time work, but the response was unexpectedly very positive.
We built our own portfolio and proposed marketing strategies tailored to each request. We also analyzed companies’ management styles and structures, suggesting areas for improvement. Word spread, and we started receiving diverse requests from the venture industry. This gave us the opportunity to deeply examine the work methods, management goals, and marketing strategies of various companies.
This experience became a huge asset for me. Analyzing management structures through real-world business cases and applying theory to reality was a more vivid learning experience than any lecture. This experience proved especially valuable when tackling assignments analyzing corporate management structures in university courses.
Above all, applying what I learned to real-world situations and directly observing the outcomes was an incredibly exhilarating experience. This period made me truly appreciate the value of ‘learning on the job’ and personally understand that business administration is not merely knowledge confined to textbooks.
Looking back now, this entire process became a crucial stepping stone in setting the direction for my career. I want to continue consistently connecting learning with real-world practice going forward.

Regarding Strengths and Weaknesses of Personality

I adapt quickly to new environments. I possess the ability to remain calm and handle unfamiliar situations without panicking, and I consider this one of my greatest strengths. Perhaps due to living abroad for an extended period and experiencing diverse situations, when problems arise, I tend to think of concrete solutions first rather than letting my emotions get the better of me.
Especially during my time studying in the US, I often witnessed fellow Korean students struggling to adapt to the unfamiliar environment. Each time, I willingly reached out to help first, naturally taking on the role of a ‘savior’ for my friends. As a result, many friends came to rely on me, and I often heard that being around me made them feel reassured.
Thus, grounded in a positive mindset and an optimistic nature, I maintain an attitude of seeking solutions in any situation. Even in crises, my belief that ‘it can be resolved’ keeps me steady; instead, I calmly grasp the core of the problem and devise practical alternatives. I believe this positive and flexible attitude positively influences those around me, acting as a ‘happy virus’ spreader.
Consequently, I can be described as an ‘optimistic realist’ who views all situations optimistically while establishing realistic countermeasures to solve problems. I believe this personality can be a significant advantage even in trade operations, where unpredictable emergencies frequently occur. This is because I can calmly diagnose problems and find the best solutions even in environments where diverse cultures and values intermingle.
However, I do have a weakness: my hasty nature. My strong desire to drive things forward sometimes leads me to rush, which can cause mistakes. Especially in corporate management or critical decision-making, where even a small error can lead to significant losses, I am constantly striving to improve this aspect of my character.
Recently, I have been practicing meditation to cultivate inner calm. Meditation greatly helps organize complex thoughts and clear my mind. I continue practicing maintaining composure and viewing the broader flow of work, and I am confident this will positively impact my ability to reduce errors and achieve better results when performing duties at your company.
Moving forward, I will further strengthen my strengths, steadily address my weaknesses, and grow into a more mature professional. While personality has an innate component, I firmly believe it can be changed and developed through dedicated effort.

Career History (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)

After graduating from university and returning to Korea, I began working in the Management Support Department at ○○ Company. I felt immense joy and excitement at the prospect of combining my beloved arts with business management. My primary responsibilities involved supporting the smooth execution of performance planning. I gained diverse practical experience through tasks like checking necessary preparations for performances, securing performers, and coordinating the overall schedule.
Stepping out of my student identity into the real workplace for the first time, every day was a continuous learning experience. Solving problems and coordinating plans within a rapidly changing environment allowed me to grow noticeably. I also personally realized that it’s not just about doing the work well; relationships with colleagues significantly impact work performance. The strong network I built with my colleagues was crucial in enhancing communication efficiency and strengthening teamwork.
Through this hands-on experience, I learned the importance of harmonious collaboration within an organization and the ability to adapt flexibly, beyond simply performing tasks. Based on these lessons and experiences, I am eager to fully utilize my capabilities and grow together with your company.

Motivation for Applying and Aspirations

During high school, I experienced a significant setback. This experience taught me more than just failure; it deeply instilled the understanding that life doesn’t always follow a predetermined path. Through that failure, I learned to acknowledge setbacks, find the courage to get back up, and mature significantly in the process.
I also realized how crucial it is to keep multiple possibilities open and explore various directions rather than fixating on a single path. I learned that life is not linear; it is a process of forging my own path amidst open choices.
These experiences and values have become my motivation for seeking employment at your company. I wish to grow alongside your company, which is achieving steady growth in the online and mobile sectors, and achieve another level of maturity. I will give my best effort to every task assigned and strive relentlessly to earn recognition for my abilities in my role.
I will approach my work with a mindset that refuses to settle for the present, always learning and exploring new things to develop myself. Even in a changing environment, I will proactively respond and contribute to your company based on analytical thinking and execution skills for problem-solving.
If given the opportunity, I promise not only to faithfully perform my duties but also to deliver results that exceed expectations. I will do my utmost not just to join, but to become a member who grows together with your company.
