This blog post introduces how to effectively showcase practical skills and responsibility in your resume by connecting your environmental club experience to a water quality environmental role.
Growth Process
“Only when ordinary moments are happy can I be happy.” These are the words of Venerable Hyemin. I used to think self-help books were just collections of common knowledge. Reading this made me realize my misconception. I knew this saying of Venerable Hyemin’s too. But I hadn’t made the effort to transform ordinary moments into happiness. I had taken mundane routines for granted, never trying to find or appreciate the newness or joy within them. This made me reflect on myself. After that, I made an effort to live with gratitude for everyday life. I felt grateful to open my eyes in the morning and see a clear sky, and grateful to start the day leisurely without any major issues. Then, today’s sky seemed different from yesterday’s, and today itself felt like a special day distinct from yesterday. A smile slipped out without me realizing it. I came to understand that even though the sky was clearly no different from yesterday’s, and today was no more special than any other day, it could feel special depending on my mindset. In this way, I live my life appreciating the small things in daily life and maintaining an attitude of seeing everything positively.
School Days
I love sports. Growing up in the countryside, I always loved running around, and I think that’s what sparked my love for exploring mountains and fields with my older brother. During college, I joined a mountaineering club and was active in it. There’s nothing more refreshing than breathing in the crisp air while hiking. Through the mountaineering club, I also participated in environmental protection campaigns. While many campaigns focused on protecting mountain trails have made things cleaner compared to the past, the litter scattered everywhere still made me frown. Seeing debris floating near the valleys also broke my heart. I always combined hiking with environmental cleanup activities alongside my mountain club members. Even peers who were initially skeptical eventually joined me in my unique passion for the environment. Club activities allowed me to build physical strength and practice environmental stewardship firsthand, making it a precious experience for me.
I also have experience setting up a booth at the National Science Museum for Science Day and conducting experiments measuring water pollution levels with elementary school students. Believing hands-on experience was crucial for teaching children about the severity of environmental pollution, my friends and I prepared this experiment to convey the gravity of water pollution at a child’s eye level. As expected, many children visited our booth, and through the experiment, we were able to instill in them an awareness of water pollution.
Strengths and Weaknesses
My meticulous nature has been the foundation for becoming a responsible person. I approach assigned tasks with a sense of ownership and a strong sense of responsibility. As the captain of the university-wide environmental club ○○, my thoroughness was invaluable during project execution. My leadership and sense of responsibility played a significant role in ensuring no members dropped out midway through our term. Coordinating schedules among friends from different universities was challenging, and securing venues involved many twists and turns. I meticulously managed each assigned area and carefully assigned roles to every team member to foster a sense of belonging. As a result, our cohort became legendary within the club for our exceptional unity and drive.
If I have a weakness, it’s that my wide range of interests risks causing overload. While experiencing many things can be an advantage, it can easily lead to overreach, so I constantly strive to guard against this. When exposed to multiple tasks, I assess whether I can handle them well and prioritize work to avoid becoming overloaded. Rather than narrowing my interests, I believe focusing on efficiency through concentration and planning will help me deliver results.
Career Experience (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)
While serving as a secretary for a water quality environmental NGO, I monitored whether water quality inspections at public water fountains were being conducted properly. Noticing that hikers often drink water without checking inspection results, I recognized the need to investigate whether testing was accurate. Our organization then developed a plan and initiated inspections. We discovered errors and requested corrective action from the relevant authorities. Working at the NGO gave me pride in using my talents to benefit society. Moreover, the process of requesting corrections from the relevant authorities allowed me to learn how to draft official documents.
Motivation for Application and Aspirations
I have developed expertise in this field to contribute to eco-friendly water quality improvement. I have also gained practical experience through related work. Based on this expertise and practical skills, I will strive to become a core asset to your company. The environment and modern society have become inextricably linked. It is also a global issue. Therefore, I wish to become a member of your company, which leads the way in addressing these environmental challenges, and contribute to solving them. If you grant me the opportunity to join, I will not only demonstrate daily growth but also quickly acquire specialized knowledge to deliver outstanding work performance.
