“Dreaming of food that can also fill the hunger of the heart”
Since childhood, our family’s greatest monthly event has been choosing a menu together, preparing it as a group, and sharing a meal. The taste of the food varied each time, and occasionally we ended up ordering delivery—a minor setback. Yet it was a precious time: we made up with family members we’d bickered with, and cautiously shared deep thoughts we’d been too shy to voice.
Food holds such diverse memories for each person. For me, family meals are incredibly happy times, but for someone else, they might have been a painful hunger where they couldn’t eat their fill, or a time enduring loneliness alone, or just a bothersome chore to satisfy an instinctive hunger. Hailing from the provinces, I deeply missed family meals while living alone in Seoul during college. Yet, some friends found family gatherings uncomfortable or preferred eating alone because they were too busy building their resumes. Some friends cooked diligently for themselves every day, while others relied so heavily on convenience stores for most meals that they even greeted the part-time staff there.
Observing these vastly different eating habits made me rethink ‘meals’. While I’m grateful to enjoy the happiness of sharing delicious food with loved ones, I often wonder how wonderful it would be if heartfelt meals could also bring healing warmth to those lacking affection.
But realistically, most young people are perpetually short on time and money. That’s why I believe the solution lies not in the occasional proper meal, but in well-made semi-prepared foods that can be eaten frequently and conveniently. After scouring supermarkets, department stores, and online shops to try most of the semi-prepared foods currently on the market, I found CJ’s products to be the most satisfying. This experience nurtured my dream of working within that very industry.
I have a deep affection for food and genuine interest in the people who eat it. I want to create food that feels like it was made with care, like something you’d get at a neighborhood restaurant, not just something thrown together.

“Finding My Calling Through Food Product Planning”
I love food. While enjoying delicious meals is important, I also cherish the excitement of the preparation process and the time spent sharing the finished dish with loved ones. The thrill of selecting quality ingredients, meticulously preparing each one, carefully adjusting seasoning quantities, and finally seeing a dish come together after the waiting time of cooking and baking is incomparable.
Moreover, to truly enjoy food, the connection with those you share it with is vital. Depending on who you eat with, even ordinary food can feel deeply moving, while elaborate dishes might go untouched. Sadly, though, I only love the entire process of creating food and sharing it with loved ones; I have no talent for cooking itself.
I usually rationalized that I didn’t particularly crave being a great cook, preferring to enjoy the process over the taste itself. But when I participated in a club cooking competition at last year’s university festival, I genuinely wanted to make something delicious. It wasn’t something that drew much attention from others, but at that time, my self-esteem was quite low due to anxiety and restlessness about the future, so I desperately wanted to achieve something. And on another level, having decided to dive into the business of turning food into products, I also wanted to acquire basic cooking skills.
So I just went to the restaurant near my school that I frequented, pestered the owner, and learned the basics of Korean cooking bit by bit in exchange for doing the dishes. I followed her around learning for nearly a month. Driven by the desire to add creativity too, I experimented on my own with various menu ideas. By the day of the festival, I barely managed to create two dishes: ‘Lunchboxes to Share During Free Periods’ and ‘Lunchboxes to Sneak and Eat During Class’. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and the unexpected popularity even led to talk among us about making and selling them. While most feedback focused on the novelty of the idea rather than the taste itself, it felt like a step closer to my future dream of product planning. This joy helped me overcome my slump.
