Briefly describe your most impactful, self-initiated experience

“A decisive help that may have changed someone’s life”

“Though others may abandon me, I shall never abandon others.”

This is a slight adaptation of a quote by Cao Cao and stands as one of my personal mottos. I can confidently say I have lived a life dedicated to helping many people.
Among these, the most rewarding memory involves assisting a young Japanese man. It was winter, twenty years ago. After studying with a friend at school, we were about to head home around 11 PM when a security guard called out to us. He asked, “There’s a student who looks Japanese. Could you help with translation?” Fortunately, I had always been interested in Japanese culture and felt confident in my Japanese. The young man, studying physics at a Japanese university, had come to Korea to take the GRE exam. He had a room at a hotel near Namsan, but because of the early morning exam, he wanted to sleep at the school or nearby. Seeing how earnest he looked, emphasizing it was an important exam, I suggested to my friend, who lived alone, “Why don’t the three of us go to your place and sleep there?” Fortunately, my friend readily agreed. Though I felt a bit uneasy, everything went smoothly. We woke up together at dawn, had breakfast, and I escorted him to the exam venue. A few days later, he sent an email expressing his deep gratitude. While it wasn’t a difficult thing to do, I believe my decision provided crucial help that could have changed someone’s life.

Describe an experience where you resolved a conflict of opinions to find the optimal collaboration solution

“I was able to transfer departments without conflict with my supervisor.”
I once worked alone with a director at an office separate from headquarters. Since the company was founded based on a patent he had filed, the director held a position equivalent to the president. Consequently, he often looked down on the president and other headquarters executives. When I was summoned to headquarters, he would frequently prevent me from going, demanding, “Who told you to come without my permission?” This left me in awkward situations. However, since he had significantly contributed to founding the company, no one could confront him. I felt anxious that staying there would prevent me from learning properly and might turn me into someone like him. I desperately wanted to transfer departments as soon as possible to build a diverse career. Yet, the thought that crossing someone even the CEO couldn’t easily confront might force me to quit the company held me back from readily asking for a transfer. Nor could I just waste time complaining inwardly. After days of agonizing, I finally requested a meeting with the department head to discuss the matter seriously. Even then, I made sure to clearly convey that I wasn’t trying to transfer because I disliked the director, but because the current work didn’t suit my aptitude. I once read that every supervisor has a psychological desire to be a hero to their subordinates. In response to my earnest request for consultation, the director readily agreed to help me transfer to another department, saying, “Well, I suppose there’s no helping it.”

Please briefly describe your efforts or plans to build expertise

“I want to target the Japanese market with natural cosmetics.”
Ever since I was young, I’ve been deeply interested in everything applied to the skin. This wasn’t about vanity; it stemmed from having severe atopic dermatitis. Dermatologists all agreed that time was the best medicine, but the atopic symptoms covering my face and body persisted into adulthood without improvement. My face was particularly bad. Unable to resist the itching, I would scratch relentlessly, leaving my face constantly red and weeping. I tried every possible treatment for my atopic dermatitis. Yet, as if mocking my efforts, I would often wake up to find my bedsheets stained red from blood, the result of scratching all night.
Then, I stumbled upon natural cosmetics. While the effect wasn’t dramatic, I could definitely feel the itching lessen compared to before. From that point on, I focused on natural cosmetics. I even tried making cosmetics myself that suited my skin. Keeping pace with the era of individual creators, I also produced and uploaded videos. When I kindly explained my own method for making natural cosmetics and the before-and-after results, the view count quickly climbed into the thousands. What surprised me even more was the unexpectedly high response from Japanese viewers. Since Japan places great importance on skincare, they showed significant interest in my natural cosmetics. I plan to expand my marketing efforts globally, not just in Japan, with even better content.

Briefly describe the key competencies and aspirations that will enable you to contribute most significantly to the position you are applying for

“I will strive to make my career synonymous with the company’s success.”
Amid trade conflicts and COVID-19, South Korea’s exports to Japan are steadily declining. However, cosmetics exports are an exception. Even during these challenging times, K-Beauty continues its robust growth trajectory. Even in the latter half of 2019, when Korea-Japan relations hit rock bottom, Korean makeup and fashion trends became hot topics among Japanese middle and high school students. Particularly, the aspect that drew the most interest from the Japanese cosmetics industry was ‘skin diagnosis’. Services using sensors and cameras to check customers’ skin conditions and recommend perfectly tailored cosmetics based on the results were being introduced in stores.
The reason this service succeeded is because there is a strong perception in Japan that Korean women have fair and beautiful skin. Therefore, I believe marketing utilizing SNS and the internet is crucial to target young Japanese people. Most young Japanese people already actively share information online about how to achieve beautiful skin like Korean celebrities. I currently run a personal channel dedicated to methods for achieving clear, translucent skin. I want to analyze the cosmetic preferences of young Japanese people using my expertise and work harder to spark their interest in Korean cosmetics. I will work diligently and do my absolute best so that my career can become the company’s career.
