What research experience should I emphasize in my physics and chemistry major statement of purpose?

This blog post examines what research experience to focus on when preparing a physics and chemistry major statement of purpose. It provides specific guidance on how to effectively highlight computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, and polymer/new materials research experience.

Reasons for Pursuing This Major (Why I Chose This Field)

I have held a deep interest in physics and science since childhood. I believe this stems from having many natural opportunities to engage with science thanks to my father, who majored in bioengineering, and my mother, who majored in chemistry, as well as my lifelong love of reading, which led me to consistently read beneficial books. Furthermore, during my elementary school years, it seemed almost fated that I often had science teachers as my homeroom teachers. My third-grade homeroom teacher, in particular, encouraged me to develop mathematical thinking by participating in math competitions. My fourth-grade homeroom teacher nurtured my interest in science. Both remain my steadfast supporters and hold high expectations for me to this day.
Upon entering university, I truly began to enjoy my major studies through the course “Understanding Applied Chemistry.” My advisor’s lectures at the time were incredibly impactful, sparking my interest in my field of study. This naturally led me to develop a deep fascination with the field of polymer engineering. During my studies, I achieved meaningful research outcomes, including two patents, one paper, and five academic presentations, including at international conferences. This established my research capabilities at an outstanding level. I believe this proficiency stemmed above all from my consistent interest and passion for polymer engineering.

Academic Plans and Goals

Since my undergraduate years, I have held a strong fascination with functional molecules. I aim to establish quantum chemical theories regarding the intermolecular forces that govern molecular structure and, based on this foundation, conduct research on molecular recognition to design materials with novel functionalities. This field falls within the realm of quantum chemistry, which is difficult to approach solely through experience or intuition; achieving our goals requires the organic collaboration of rigorous theoretical research and meticulous experimental processes. Therefore, to enhance research efficiency and completeness, I intend to continue research where systems theoretically predicted and designed using computational quantum chemical methods are actually synthesized. Alongside this, I wish to challenge myself in programming for nanoelectronic and nanomechanical device research, developing new computational programs, and various research areas based on bioinformatics and chemoinformatics.

Post-Graduation Plans

The field of functional molecules is a core technology currently being strategically developed by countries worldwide. In Korea, it is also recognized as a national priority area, one of the next-generation growth engines following semiconductors. Amidst this era’s momentum, I too have developed a passionate desire to stake my future on this field. After completing my doctoral program at your university, I wish to establish a venture company to pioneer new research frontiers. Predicting molecules with novel functionalities not found in nature and designing new functional molecular assemblies has been my long-held dream. Based on this, I aim to develop ultra-miniature electronic devices capable of ultra-fast, ultra-efficient information processing, thereby establishing the foundation to lead future industries. Furthermore, I aspire to contribute to future industrial development through research that deeply elucidates the unique functions and characteristics of biomolecules.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

Among the figures I admire is Al Gore. Though not a scientist but a politician, he actively championed environmental campaigns and made significant contributions to realizing environmental policies. His efforts to positively transform the world by leveraging his scientific background and exceptional leadership are qualities I aspire to emulate. Science possesses the power to change the world, and I firmly believe scientists must possess sound leadership. This is because guiding people toward the proper direction for utilizing new science and technology, and leading them to put it into practice, is a crucial role for the happiness of all humanity. I will strive with a sense of responsibility to become a scientist with sound leadership, ensuring humanity progresses in a desirable direction.
