What kind of career vision should a law school statement of purpose for an aspiring human rights lawyer showcase?

This blog post examines in detail the specific direction an applicant aspiring to be a human rights lawyer should take in their law school statement of purpose to reveal their vision and preparation process.

Motivation for Pursuing Law (Reason for Choosing Major)

I have wanted to become a lawyer since elementary school. While it began as a vague aspiration, I envisioned it as a profession where I could help neighbors in need without facing discrimination simply because I am a woman. Reading “The Biography of Cho Young-rae” particularly helped me concretely envision a life path as a human rights lawyer, and that experience became a pivotal moment in determining my career direction. Now, I have set a new goal: to establish a new benchmark for public interest legal practice in our society. Preparing for graduate school is my first step toward realizing this goal.
While pursuing a career at a top law firm after graduating from the law department of ○○ University is undoubtedly a meaningful and important choice, my desire to engage in work that tangibly contributes to society—even if it doesn’t immediately shine—is stronger than the pursuit of financial reward. For these reasons, I am knocking on the door of your graduate school. After completing my studies at your institution, I aspire to find fulfillment as a lawyer who provides tangible support to the socially vulnerable and many others in need.

Primary Research Interests and Research Plan

I have maintained a consistent interest in the human rights issues faced by people who feel like ‘outsiders’ in our society. Today, the category of ‘outsiders’ in Korean society is extremely broad, encompassing refugees, people of mixed race, migrant workers, international marriage immigrants (migrant women), sexual minorities, people living with HIV/AIDS, and persons with disabilities. I wish to deeply study the human rights issues faced by these minorities and socially vulnerable groups and become a researcher with expertise in this field.
To this end, I plan to engage in more in-depth learning and research on the human rights realities of minorities and the socially vulnerable, diverse human rights issues, and international human rights standards. Through this research, I aim to contribute to expanding the boundaries of human rights in our society. I consider advocating for hope for the marginalized and suffering as my lifelong mission, and in this process, I aspire to achieve both academic contributions and practical action.

Plans After the Doctoral Program

Should I be admitted to your institution, I will first focus on solidifying my fundamental qualifications as a legal professional. I will strive diligently to cultivate a sense of responsibility that prioritizes the community and develop the discernment to wisely judge society’s complex problems. Even as a public interest lawyer, expertise remains an indispensable value. I aspire to grow into a lawyer armed with expertise, capable of fulfilling social responsibilities while actively responding to evolving societal demands.
After completing my doctoral studies, I wish to participate in concrete human rights protection activities centered on the human rights issues of the socially vulnerable and minorities, contributing to the process of improving systemic shortcomings. Through this, my hope is to contribute to expanding the boundaries of human rights in our society one step further. Furthermore, as a public interest lawyer who changes the world, I wish to practice diverse volunteer activities. I plan to pursue public interest projects and activities centered on recognizing minorities and the socially vulnerable in our society as equal subjects and working together with them to solve problems.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

According to a senior lawyer currently practicing, when handling legal work, opportunities to dine with clients or business associates frequently arise. During these occasions, conversations naturally extend beyond work matters to everyday topics. People with rich conversational topics and broad interests tend to inspire trust. These qualities can be crucial in positively maintaining long-term client relationships.
I strive to consistently build up diverse topics I can share with others through books, movies, and various hobbies. I believe this is another concrete competency one must prepare to become an excellent lawyer. Therefore, beyond professional theory, I constantly work to cultivate various abilities in my daily life to develop humanistic qualities and cultural literacy.
As a profession that constantly deals with people, a lawyer must possess the essential ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to persuade others while clearly conveying their own opinions. Furthermore, as a practitioner of law, maintaining an ethical and morally upright spirit is fundamental, as is the responsibility and integrity to see a client’s case through to the end. I continuously strive to embody these virtues, aiming to grow into a legal professional who combines expertise with humanity. I believe this attitude and preparation will form an unwavering foundation for my future academic and practical journey.
