This blog post introduces how to effectively incorporate the responsibility and customer service skills cultivated through long-term part-time work experience into a sales position resume.
During my school years
While majoring in environmental engineering in college, I developed a deep interest in waste treatment and resource recycling. I explored this field so deeply that I wrote a thesis on the subject, which allowed me to keenly grasp the value and necessity of environmental engineering. Although it was a relatively underdeveloped major in Korea at the time, I believed its importance would grow significantly as our country advanced toward developed nation status. I learned that environmental issues like air and water pollution, while partly influenced by domestic factors, are actually closely linked to waste generated by businesses.
During the thesis preparation process, while researching materials and collecting environmental dispute cases, I encountered numerous incidents. Organizing these cases made me personally feel the urgency of solving environmental problems. Especially when facing the reality that many companies recklessly consume resources solely for their own profit and neglect regeneration, I set a new goal: to work for an ‘environmentally conscious company’ or a ‘company pursuing sustainable development’. I believed that without considering recycling and resource circulation at a societal level, companies would ultimately degenerate into profit-chasing entities, losing their purpose within society.
From that point, I became convinced that all domestic chemical engineering companies must adhere to mandatory environmental standards. I further concluded that a specialized process for intermediate management was needed to inspect and coordinate corporate activities against these standards. Holding these convictions, I spent my entire university years seeking out and preparing for companies practicing ‘environmental management’. This journey became a crucial time for me, extending beyond mere academic study to concretely shaping my future career path and life direction.
Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality – The Power of Diligence and Perseverance
I am diligent and highly patient, possessing a tendency to consistently see tasks through to completion. Throughout my four years of university, I maintained one part-time job without interruption. While many students frequently switch between various short-term part-time jobs to gain diverse social experience, I steadily continued the administrative work at a goshiwon (a type of low-cost lodging) that I first started in my freshman year until graduation. This job wasn’t directly tied to any special vision or future plan, but it suited my disposition well since I started it to cover tuition, allowing me to sustain it long-term. I believe that what truly fits someone is deeply connected to their personal endurance.
I sometimes see people frequently changing jobs or trying various fields because they feel it doesn’t suit their aptitude. While they undoubtedly have their own life philosophies, I place greater value on quietly working in one place, building experience and trust. Unless there’s a compelling reason to try something new, I believe persevering patiently with the task at hand until the end is more valuable. I believe that true diligence means consistently continuing even seemingly trivial tasks for at least six months, or preferably a year or more. Only after doing so can one truly say they “made an effort.”
While working as the general affairs manager at a goshiwon, I clocked in and out at fixed times every day and meticulously recorded the ledgers. Throughout my entire tenure, I never made a single work-related mistake. When I absolutely had to be absent, I always notified management at least one day in advance. If a replacement was needed, I personally arranged for one beforehand. I believe that maintaining a state of making no mistakes is far more challenging than simply reducing mistakes. However, for me, adhering to these rules was not something special; it was a fundamental habit, a natural part of my daily routine.
Moving forward, I aim to build upon this foundation of diligence and consistency to become a trusted individual who fulfills responsibilities long-term in any role. At your company, I will perform assigned tasks with unwavering dedication, growing into a talent who adds stability and trust to the organization.
What I Learned During My Language Study in the Philippines
After graduating from university, I spent a year studying English in the Philippines. When I first left, my goal was simply to improve my English skills and gain overseas experience. However, upon returning a year later, I discovered a more mature version of myself, beyond mere language proficiency. That growth was the power to recognize and understand differences.
As a child, I struggled to accept people who thought or acted differently from me. I equated ‘difference’ with ‘wrongness,’ which often led to unnecessary friction. The same pattern emerged when I began my language studies in the Philippines. When opinions differed with fellow students or locals, I tended to avoid or feel uncomfortable rather than respond flexibly. However, after about six months, my perspective began to shift. I came to recognize that countless people in the world speak different languages and have lived within different cultures, and that their lives hold their own reasons and values. Through this, I gained the insight that ‘to get along well with others, one must first make an effort to look into and understand their life.’
Of course, such efforts aren’t easy when self-centeredness takes precedence. But a friend I met in the Philippines became the catalyst that changed my perspective. Though a foreigner, he respected my lifestyle habits and thoughtfully made our cohabitation as roommates comfortable. Through him, I learned the ‘value of novelty’ and ‘how to consider others.’ Thanks to that experience, I now firmly believe that the starting point for any communication—be it personal or professional—is a ‘heart that respects and cares for others.’
My language study in the Philippines was more than just an overseas experience; it taught me the most essential fundamentals required of a salesperson. The values of understanding and consideration I learned through encounters with diverse people remain central to my life and work today. Moving forward, I intend to continue building connections between people based on these values.
