Dreaming Beyond My Major, Dreaming of the World

At university, I majored in Public Administration. I chose this major with the goal of becoming a civil servant, one of the most stable careers for women, and I aspired to work in the social welfare field, supporting facilities for the socially vulnerable. I approached my schoolwork diligently, consistently maintaining top grades. However, hearing friends who had studied abroad say they “gained a much broader perspective on the world” sparked my own desire to experience life overseas. After considering ways to minimize the financial burden on my parents, I applied for a German exchange program. The competition was fierce, so I didn’t expect much, but luckily, I was selected and gained the opportunity to live in Germany for a year.
For someone who had never traveled alone outside of family trips, spending a year away from my family was a huge adventure. Yet, my excitement far outweighed any fear of the unfamiliar environment. My German skills were limited to basic conversational level, learned as a second foreign language in high school. So, I poured all my energy into studying German and English before departure. However, once I arrived, the reality of juggling the language barrier and academics simultaneously proved far more challenging than anticipated. Most days, I slept less than five hours, but that year spent carving out time to study and adapt was one I will never regret. There, I interacted with friends from Germany, Egypt, Australia, and countries around the world, experiencing diverse cultures. That experience sparked my goal: ‘I want to work on the global stage.’
After returning home, I enrolled in a flight attendant training academy to pursue this new goal, beginning my preparations in earnest. My major studies in college and that year in Germany gave me more than just a resume entry. They broadened my horizons beyond seeking only stable paths and instilled in me a mindset unafraid of challenge and growth. Even as I write this now, I hold that dream of the world I embraced back then firmly in my heart.

Understanding Society and Humanity

Studying sociology, I learned diverse theories and methodologies capable of explaining everything from macro-level societal shifts to micro-level changes in interpersonal relationships. This equipped me with broad, specialized knowledge spanning the entire social spectrum: future societal outlooks, transformations in the information society, the relationship between science/technology and society, human interactions, the social significance of sports, gender and family, multiculturalism, and popular culture.
Sociology is the discipline of observing social conflicts and diverse phenomena, establishing theories and hypotheses based on these observations, and explaining phenomena using sociological analytical methods and research methodologies. Through this process, I developed not only the ability to interpret analytical results but also broadened my perspective on society, cultivating the power to understand problems from diverse viewpoints.
Last winter break, seeking both academic growth and time for self-reflection, I participated in the ‘Mind Training College Student Camp’. There, I engaged in deep introspection, sorted out troubles weighing on my mind, and developed the ability to regulate myself. It was a valuable time for inner growth, not mere rest, and through it, the understanding of society and humanity I learned academically became more multidimensional.

Building Passion for Video and Photography Through Experience

There was a time when I enjoyed meeting diverse friends interested in photography and film clubs, each seeking to capture a part of the world through their own unique lens. For those who sought to grasp the fleeting moments—time that could neither be cherished nor reversed—and give them permanence, each had their own distinct purpose and goal. At home, I sometimes heard my parents’ worries that “you shouldn’t get too absorbed in such things.” Yet, when I was with club friends who shared similar hobbies and tastes, I could comfortably blend in as an ordinary person—someone whose opinions could be shared and understood—rather than feeling like a special or strange child.
While we were all actively immersed in filming videos and taking photos, the goals and intentions behind them were truly as diverse as a spectrum. Even when shooting similar subjects, the results, imbued with each person’s unique perspective and interpretation, took on completely different hues. Seeing those works fueled my own growing desire to become someone who strongly expressed their own individuality and color. I wanted to create work where the images on the screen naturally revealed the theme, even without explaining intentions or preferences with words, and where the viewer, following that flow, could arrive at a clear destination. So I began the effort to engage in conversation with people who would understand me not through spoken words, but through visual language.
Of course, I was still immature and clumsy back then. Often, my intended meaning didn’t come across well, or communication with others didn’t flow smoothly, leading to frustration. But those days were also filled with excitement, heart-pounding anticipation, and joy. Those experiences gradually accumulated within me, becoming the foundation for my growth. During my adolescence, I was taking those cautious steps one by one, embarking on a long journey to bring the world inside me out into the open. Looking back now, that time became a precious foundation that shaped my perspective and sensibilities in life, going far beyond a simple hobby.

Diverse experiences and skills cultivated as a Tourism English major

Enrolling in the Tourism English department at university, I consistently worked to solidify my English and language skills. While I believed I possessed a certain level of English proficiency, I encountered unexpected challenges when actually introducing tourist sites to foreigners. This experience fueled my passion, driving me to dedicate myself even more intensely to studying English. Recognizing China’s significant role in the tourism industry, I also pursued Chinese language studies alongside English.
During this period, I participated in volunteer activities organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This involved introducing and guiding tourists around areas frequently visited by foreigners, providing an excellent opportunity to fully utilize my language skills. Surprisingly, I found immense satisfaction in this work. Introducing Korea to foreigners gave me a sense of pride, as if I were a mini diplomat. I diligently researched relevant materials and studied earnestly, hoping my efforts could contribute to a more positive image of Korea.
During my sophomore year, I also went backpacking with friends, experiencing various overseas tourist resources firsthand. There, I could directly observe how locals introduced tourist spots and what elements they commercialized, which was an invaluable learning experience for me. These experiences and knowledge will remain important assets for me going forward, and if I join your company, I intend to actively utilize them to contribute to its development.

Immersed in Marketing Methodology, Studying Like a Love Affair

While majoring in Business Administration, I first encountered the course ‘Marketing Methodology’. In that moment, it felt like an entirely new world unfolded before me. Marketing theories that seemed to pierce through human psychology instantly captivated my heart, and before I knew it, I had become an ardent fan of the professor in charge. My encounter with the field of marketing felt like embarking on a thrilling romance. Every lecture brought new discoveries, and the joy I felt in that process was indescribable.
But just as romance isn’t always happy, my relationship with the discipline also had its conflicts. I felt frustrated by unanswered questions and sometimes even took it out on books for no good reason. Yet, after mulling things over alone for a while, marketing would quietly hand me the key to the answer. After weathering so many ups and downs together over the years, I found myself earning a doctoral degree. Perhaps marketing and I are destined for a lifelong partnership, a relationship meant to last a hundred years. If my childhood was a romance with ‘perfume,’ then my university years were a courtship with marketing that ultimately led to marriage.
During my doctoral studies, I wrote a dissertation on ‘Cosmetics Marketing.’ I analyzed the consumption patterns and psychology of men and women in their early 30s regarding cosmetics, comparing current marketing methods to those suitable for this demand. Furthermore, I contemplated what new strategies might align with the future market. While preparing my thesis, I briefly assisted at the Advertising and Marketing Research Institute, where my advisor served as director, gaining access to the vivid insights of industry professionals. That experience provided me with practical, real-world connections beyond mere academia.
Looking back, my school days, immersed like a romance, were a time radiant with passion. I sincerely hope that this fiery passion will continue to be cherished and sustained throughout my life and work.

I have consistently developed my computer skills

Having been interested in computers since childhood, I didn’t stop at self-learning but systematically studied and built my skills. As a result, by middle school, I had already become proficient enough to earn several computer-related certifications. My curiosity didn’t stop at merely using programs; I increasingly wondered, ‘How do computers actually work?’ Eventually, unable to resist my curiosity, I disassembled a computer myself. This experience led me to start taking apart household appliances one by one. Each time, I meticulously read the manuals and searched online for related information to learn their structure and operating principles. As I gradually broadened my technical understanding this way, I deeply realized the importance of ‘understanding the principles.’ I personally experienced that knowing the principles enables application, and the deeper the understanding of those principles, the broader the scope of their utilization.
With such a strong interest in machines and technology, I naturally chose to attend a vocational high school. The emphasis on hands-on practice and field-based classes was particularly appealing. Although my teachers and parents, who had consistently seen me maintain top grades throughout middle school, encouraged me to attend a general high school and major in my chosen field at university, I believed, “If I’m going to major in it anyway, learning it sooner is more efficient.” After months of persuasion, I finally gained my parents’ and teachers’ permission. Since this was the first time my parents, who had always supported me, opposed my choice, I felt an even greater sense of responsibility for my decision.
After enrolling in vocational high school, I took specialized classes and realized that what I knew up to that point was only a tiny fraction of the whole. Driven by a deep desire to learn more, I immersed myself in my studies. As a result, I never once lost the top spot in the school rankings until graduation. Even during my field training in my third year, I gave my all. My dedication impressed the CEO, who offered me a job after graduation. I gave my utmost effort to the path I had chosen.
Looking back, it was the curiosity and inquisitiveness of my childhood that led me to this path. What I learned along the way wasn’t just simple skills, but the power to understand principles and apply them. Moving forward, I want to grow step by step based on this learning and demonstrate my capabilities in a wider world.

The Path of Learning Driven by Passion

Having always enjoyed connecting with people, I majored in Communication Studies in college. This choice opened doors to new academic fields and led me to deeply contemplate relationship-building—not just through direct interaction but also via media. Naturally, I developed an interest in marketing, and I don’t think I’ve ever been as passionately immersed in a subject as I was then. Studying marketing confirmed it was “the perfect fit for someone like me who loves people.” The process of introducing products to consumers and persuasively communicating their benefits proved incredibly compelling. This fascination also translated into academic achievement, resulting in A+ grades in all my business-related courses. My decision to double major in Business Administration while studying Communication ultimately stemmed from this passion for marketing.
Though handling double the workload for two majors was demanding, I never once felt it was too much. Rather, it was possible because I found joy in the academic pursuit and could immerse myself fully. Psychology-related courses were also a field that greatly interested me. Since marketing is deeply connected to psychology, I had no significant difficulty understanding it, and psychology also greatly aided my deeper comprehension of communication studies. This experience made me realize that all disciplines are interconnected. The more diverse fields I studied, the more confident I became that linking them together allowed for deeper understanding. This awareness became the foundation for my interest in and exploration of various academic fields.
The convergence of disciplines equipped me with theoretical knowledge, and this solid theoretical groundwork became the driving force behind my achievements in the real world. In the past, I didn’t believe the saying ‘studying is a hobby’ and questioned, ‘Are there really people who find studying interesting?’ However, having experienced the joy of immersing myself in academic pursuits, I now firmly believe that saying is true. I have personally learned that I achieve my best results when I take on challenges with genuine interest. Moving forward, I will continue to approach all endeavors with curiosity and passion, taking one step at a time with a mindset that enjoys learning.

From Interest to My Own Specialty! The Process of Finding What I Can Do Well

Throughout my school years, diverse interests and talents naturally influenced my career choices. I went through that phase too. At a time when my curiosity about new things was growing, I developed a deep fascination with operating programs through computers. My teacher’s words, “New media technologies like this will transform people’s lives in the future,” resonated deeply with me. In that moment, I set the goal of ‘developing expertise in this field.’
Eager to solidify my path and move forward, I decided to pursue vocational education. There, I earned certifications in computer science and accounting, adding professional credentials to my resume. Thanks to my strong academic record, I smoothly entered the Secretarial Studies Department at ○○ University. After experiencing university life and preparing for two years to broaden my options, I successfully transferred to another university. Following the transfer, I spent a year studying abroad in ○○ through an exchange program – the most special and happiest time of my life.
Leaving my parents’ home for the first time, I had to handle everything independently. Although I studied English diligently during the preparation period, the language barrier I encountered locally was far from easy. However, meeting friends from various countries, sharing our joys and sorrows, and channeling our determination into studying helped me overcome this challenge. My English skills improved daily through this process. Experiencing cultures from around the world—rarely encountered in Korea—and the freedom felt locally made me feel I had grown significantly as a person.
Additionally, during that period, I earned my TESOL IV certification. This achievement demonstrated not only a valuable experience but also my diligent preparation for my career path. That’s why it remains a particularly meaningful and significant result in my memory. Looking back now, I realize that small steps toward my interests led me here, and everything I learned along the way has become a solid foundation for the road ahead.

My Path as an English Major

As an English major, I’ve grown through diverse experiences. I often struggled to refuse requests or say “no” to things I felt were wrong, strongly believing that “what’s good is good.” While personal matters might eventually resolve themselves even if they were tiring, work or organizational matters are different. So, I honestly shared this tendency with my team leader. In ambiguous situations, I made an effort to decline requests without causing undue strain by seeking the team’s support, and to avoid taking on tasks I shouldn’t. Through this process, I learned a great deal from watching my team leader decline requests professionally without offending the other party. After several such experiences, I naturally began to organize my work using that approach.
Thanks to my English major, I had access to various foreign language activities since my school days. Starting with editorial work for the school’s English newspaper club sparked my interest not only in literature and everyday conversation but also in English-language journalism. Through this club, I gained opportunities to meet and interview people from diverse fields, broadening my interest in society as a whole. Above all, I came to realize firsthand that the world I had lived in was not the whole world, and that I had been a ‘frog in a well’ all along. My experience with the English newspaper club not only provided the opportunity to produce and publish a newspaper in English, but also allowed me to gain immense energy and inspiration for the future from the people I met through interviews. It became a crucial turning point in my life.
Upon graduation, I joined my first company, where I was assigned to the overseas sales team handling translation work. It was a small but solid mid-sized company, and being part of the overseas sales team initially made everything satisfying. However, due to the team structure, I was assigned to the support part, so I had almost no opportunity to learn practical processes or experience the business field firsthand. Throughout my tenure, my main tasks were translating contracts and writing emails. Of course, the skills I built then—understanding English contracts and writing business emails—remain a significant asset to me today. But I’m someone who values using foreign languages as a tool to achieve something, rather than valuing the languages themselves as an end goal. So, I gradually felt stifled by just doing simple translation work.
After that, at the new company I joined, I was assigned overall overseas sales responsibilities, including sales planning, performance management, customer and business partner management, and new market development. I’ve been working as an overseas sales manager ever since. Now, leveraging my language skills, I enjoy viewing markets with a broader perspective, formulating strategies, and directly creating results. The communication skills, the art of refusal, and the insights gained through encounters with diverse people during this process have deeply permeated both my work and life.

Accumulation of Overseas Experience and Industrial Engineering Skills

From a young age, I wasn’t the type to step forward and actively assert my presence. So, during elementary and middle school, I grew up quietly focusing on my studies, building friendships with classmates, and diligently following my teachers’ guidance. However, after entering high school, once I gained a certain level of trust and respect, I naturally began to attract attention without needing to intentionally seek it out. As I gained recognition from teachers and a good reputation among seniors and juniors, I took on roles as a student council officer and eventually student council president. Through this process, I discovered a side of myself that was dedicated to serving others and fulfilling the responsibilities given to me. From that point on, I learned to give my absolute best to every task I undertook.
Later, when I entered university, I followed in my father’s footsteps and majored in Industrial and Management Engineering. My father was someone who always gave his utmost, both internally and externally, and he served as a good role model for me. Seeing him like that, I too wanted to find a way to contribute to companies and society, and I believed Industrial and Management Engineering could be the answer. Industrial and Management Engineering is a discipline that supports efficient production activities in companies. It encompasses diverse fields such as SCM (Supply Chain Management), which systematically manages information, logistics, and talent; UI (User Interface) and HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), which enhance product usability and convenience; and consulting, which maximizes a company’s management efficiency. Studying these subjects allowed me to gain a broad understanding of the technologies and principles within the industrial management field.
However, I didn’t want to become someone with a ‘narrow perspective’ who views the world solely through the lens of my major. So, outside of my studies, I worked part-time jobs to fund my travels, backpacking not only domestically but also abroad. While my trips were mainly to Asian countries like Southeast Asia, China, and Japan, I gained profound insights by directly experiencing people with distinct cultures, even within similar geographical backgrounds. This process broadened my perspective on the world and allowed me to deeply reflect on myself and the direction I wanted to take.
These experiences and lessons have made me stronger. The ability to quietly do my work, the experience of growing alongside others, and an open mind receptive to new perspectives have taken root within me. I believe these will be important assets on the path ahead.
