In this blog post, we’ll examine an exemplary sample academic plan for gaining admission to medical school.
Writing About Academic Experience and Reflections
I believed that academic knowledge was paramount to becoming the doctor I aspired to be. I firmly held that broad and deep knowledge was essential to accurately diagnose a patient’s illness and prescribe appropriate treatment without misdiagnosis. Therefore, when studying, I adopted a self-directed approach: whenever I encountered something I didn’t understand, I would ponder it myself and search for resources to find the solution. However, as time passed, I realized this method alone had its limitations. Trying to solve problems alone narrowed the breadth of information I encountered and limited my opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives and interpretations.
From that point, I began seeking ways to gather varied opinions and information on a single topic. One such method was sharing knowledge by asking questions of my teachers and friends. At first, asking questions felt embarrassing, and explaining what I knew to others was burdensome. So I’d write down questions for my teacher beforehand and prepare answers for parts I thought my friends might struggle with. Yet sometimes, I just couldn’t muster the courage to ask. But once I did gather the courage to ask, my teacher and friends welcomed my questions so warmly that all my previous worries and burdens felt completely unnecessary.
Learning through questions and conversation proved far more efficient than I’d expected. My comprehension speed increased compared to studying alone, and subjects that once felt daunting became interesting. I also gained new knowledge through explanations from friends sharing the same dream, and it noticeably improved my grades. Most importantly, asking and answering questions built bonds between us, allowing me to quickly grasp what others found difficult and where they needed help.
Through this experience, I realized that to achieve good results, it’s crucial to build trust and empathy with others, going beyond simply conveying knowledge. Similarly, a doctor treating a patient must understand the patient’s emotions and form a bond before the patient can trust the doctor and actively engage in treatment. Therefore, I resolved to become a doctor who not only possesses the medical skills necessary to treat patients’ illnesses but also has the ability to deeply understand the hearts of patients and their families. I believe only a doctor possessing both of these qualities can truly care for and heal patients.
Major School Activities and Reflections
During high school, I poured particular passion into two school activities. The first was ‘sign language,’ which I learned in an after-school program. Initially, I started taking sign language classes simply out of interest. In the first class, we learned to express song lyrics word by word using sign language. It felt awkward at first because conveying meaning through hand gestures was unfamiliar, and I often struggled to follow the movements. However, as time passed, my hand movements became more natural, and I could sign an entire verse of a song. That’s when the class began to focus more on sign language than spoken words.
Through this process, I gained a small glimpse into the difficulties faced by people who cannot communicate verbally. I truly felt the frustration of trying to convey one’s thoughts only to be misunderstood, and the stark reality that in an emergency, a lack of communication could put lives at risk. I especially wondered, ‘How do people who use sign language receive treatment from doctors? Do they receive the same medical benefits as everyone else?’ Upon looking into it, I discovered the shocking fact that there are only three medical sign language interpreters in the country. At that moment, I set the goal of becoming a doctor who helps ensure no one is denied necessary treatment due to disability. After that, I focused even more intensely on the after-school program, and that time became an incredibly valuable and meaningful experience for me.
The second was my science club activities. I particularly loved science because I found it fascinating to conduct experiments myself, thereby reconfirming and internalizing theories. Chemistry and biology experiments, especially, felt extra special since they involved using chemicals not easily encountered in daily life. This is why I joined the science club, and it allowed me to fill the void I felt when regular classes only covered textbook experiments. In the club, I could plan experiments I wanted to do myself and challenge new experiments within the bounds of safety rules, making every moment exciting and enjoyable.
When conducting experiments in groups, I actively proposed ideas and led the experiments. In the process, I consistently made efforts to learn more deeply: researching related materials, organizing precautions, and comparing others’ experimental results. As a result, just four months after joining, I took on the role of leading experiments proactively. By my second year, I had even risen to a position of responsibility within the club. This experience didn’t just improve my science grades; it heightened my interest in academics overall, positively impacting my overall performance. Above all, it was a precious time where I discovered the joy of learning and realizing new things.
Through these two activities, I deeply felt the ‘value of communication’ and the ‘joy of learning’. Sign language class taught me how crucial understanding and connection between people are, while the science club activity showed me the joy of challenge and exploration. These high school experiences became a solid foundation for deciding my future career and academic direction, remaining a valuable time that helped me grow significantly.
Examples of Care, Sharing, and Cooperation and Reflections
“Cooperation and Care Learned While Helping a Sick Friend”
In my second year of high school, my closest friend was involved in a traffic accident and had to wear a cast on their leg for about a month. Walking was difficult for him. At first, everyone in our class was concerned and helped him, carrying his bag and assisting so he wouldn’t face inconveniences at school. However, as time passed, perhaps because they grew accustomed to the situation, they gradually began to show signs of annoyance. Focused on their own school lives, they paid less attention to him. Consequently, my injured friend’s daily life became increasingly difficult; even going to the bathroom seemed to be a struggle for him.
As his closest friend, I never felt it was a burden or inconvenience. Whenever he asked for help, I did my absolute best to assist him. Through this process, I gradually came to understand aspects of each other’s tastes and values that had previously been hard to grasp. I also learned how to be considerate enough to make requests without hesitation. Of course, actions taken for each other sometimes led to misunderstandings or minor conflicts, but resolving them through conversation actually brought us closer.
The times I helped my friend weren’t grand or special events. But through that experience, I reflected on how I used to get angry and frustrated, feeling my friend didn’t understand me. I thought we ‘knew each other well,’ but I realized that all along, my friend had been the one making more concessions, showing more consideration, and putting more effort into understanding me. When I understood that, a deep sense of gratitude washed over me.
This experience taught me that consideration, sharing, and cooperation don’t have to be grand or extraordinary; they begin with small, everyday actions. I also learned that this goes beyond simply giving and receiving help; it becomes a force that drives each other’s growth. Moving forward, I want to practice small acts of consideration for others and build relationships where we can grow together.
Efforts and Preparation Related to Motivation and Career Plans
I believe the Pre-Medical Department at ○○ University is the program that best aligns with my dream of becoming a doctor who not only acquires specialized medical knowledge but also deeply understands and comforts patients. In particular, the Pre-Medical Department at ○○ University possesses three world-class research institutes and provides an educational environment that fosters students’ international capabilities through diverse global programs both domestically and abroad. I decided to apply because I believe I can achieve both learning and growth within this systematic and professional academic foundation and nurturing environment.
To become a physician who grows alongside ○○ University, I have strived since high school to solidify the fundamental knowledge of biology and the human body essential for a doctor. To this end, I participated in the Life Sciences Club, combining theoretical study with experiments to establish a solid foundational academic base. However, recognizing the limitations of high school education alone, I sought out and read as many accessible medical books as possible to broaden my knowledge. Furthermore, believing that trust between doctor and patient is paramount for accurate diagnosis, I actively participated in various learning activities like asking questions and giving presentations to improve my previously passive personality and cultivate a more proactive attitude.
Furthermore, through volunteer work, I learned to interact with diverse people, listen to their stories, and offer comfort. My experience volunteering at a long-term care hospital was particularly profound. Conversing with elderly patients weary from prolonged hospital stays, I felt their loneliness and longing for times past deeply. This experience taught me the profound importance of viewing patients not merely as subjects for treatment, but as individuals whose lives and emotions deserve understanding. I believe a physician’s disposition is shaped by personal values. However, I also firmly believe that even the warmest-hearted doctor with the most upright values cannot fully fulfill their role as a true physician without professional knowledge and fundamental competence.
Therefore, to become a physician who possesses both excellent medical expertise and strong character, I aim to grow both academically and personally under the guidance of outstanding professors at the ○○ University School of Medicine. As I progress along the path to becoming a doctor, I will continuously learn and practice to become a medical professional equipped with knowledge, the right attitude, and genuine sincerity in treating people.
