This blog post explores how rural experiences and a responsible attitude, included in an office job application letter, can serve as competitive advantages.
Growth Process
‘Where does all this trash people write and throw away go?’ As a child, I only moved to the city in earnest as a middle schooler when my farming parents relocated. During my somewhat challenging adjustment period, I often harbored countless questions. Where do all these people rush off to every morning? Where did all the rice, meat, and vegetables come from to feed the overflowing crowds everywhere I went? Where were the mountains of goods piled high in supermarkets made, shipped, and sold to people? Did they really sell all that? Coming from a small village where life was relatively quiet and peaceful, I had to make a constant effort to become accustomed to this landscape that inevitably led to deep reflection.
The aspect that sparked the most curiosity for me was the question of where all the city’s trash went—trash that I could already witness firsthand on the streets, a testament to just how much people consume and discard. If someone buys and consumes all the goods and food filling the supermarkets, an equivalent amount of waste must inevitably be produced. I wondered where exactly the final destination for all that waste was prepared. Consequently, whenever environmental issues or topics related to waste disposal came up in school classes, I would listen intently, hoping to find knowledge that might satisfy my curiosity. Options like incineration, landfill, and recycling existed, but I doubted whether such processes could truly handle the steady stream of waste produced by an entire city. This was a question that kept surfacing because I was constantly overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the city I first encountered, its grandeur so immense it left me perpetually awestruck.
School Days
Compared to the countryside, which offered a serene and pristine environment but lacked infrastructure, city life built an overwhelmingly vast foundation that made my head spin. Yet, it also meant environmental issues were often pushed aside. As I adapted to this urban existence, I gradually realized how extraordinary and hard-won the environment I’d taken for granted truly was, learning to appreciate it anew. Among the friends I met in the city, there were children who had never properly encountered soil, animals, or insects. They had simply repeated studying since childhood, becoming accustomed to a repetitive, hamster-wheel-like existence. They lived knowing almost nothing about the nature that forms the very foundation of their own lives.
Knowing this gratitude, and being in a position where I could clearly recognize and always distinguish the differences between the place I grew up and the city, I felt I should pay even more attention to environmental issues. Many things I had taken for granted and accepted as normal were, in fact, remnants barely surviving the encroachment of cities and development. Having benefited from them throughout my childhood, I felt a sense of duty to become someone capable of living up to that expectation. My experience sparked a curiosity about urban environmental issues, beginning with the question, “Where does all the trash go?” This curiosity led me to believe I should not only understand and recognize these problems but also take on a role where I could directly contribute to related work. I wanted to go beyond mere intellectual understanding; I wanted to take action and perform duties that would make even a small difference.
Strengths and Weaknesses
I am someone who prioritizes what I must accomplish and my position over what I want to do, striving to contribute meaningfully to the world that has sustained me thus far. I did not come into this world alone. The myriad factors that have nurtured me thus far could only function under the generosity of many and the world’s kindness. My duty, having grown this far with the collective’s help, is to fully fulfill the role entrusted to me as a member of that collective. The grace I have received and grown up with in this world is too great for me to abandon my duties by becoming overly fixated on my own desires or emotions. I have always lived with the constant hope of growing into an adult capable of repaying that debt as soon as possible.
I am always conscious that people cannot grow alone; those raised under the care of many must rightfully take on that duty, becoming helpers who nurture the next generation. Society has been built this way, forming and sustaining civilization for ages. Therefore, I wish to pursue a life where I focus more on my social position and duties than on personal desires, striving to dedicate myself to fulfilling my responsibilities for the community.
Life Creed
Let us cherish the understanding that the world we inhabit is not our possession, but a foundation entrusted to us to pass on to the next generation. People often forget that the environment given to us exists as the property of the many, and that each of us must bear responsibility and manage it carefully, just as our ancestors bequeathed it to us. They think that since they needn’t worry about what happens after they leave this world, they can act purely self-centeredly.
However, just as we must be mindful of others and strive to integrate into the collective to build proper relationships in society, our generation must faithfully fulfill the duty of passing the baton to ensure human life continues unbroken. This is so we do not become obsolete between the past and the future, but instead fulfill our role. Just as we received the baton of life and maintained our present existence, the next generation must also receive it properly. Only then can the world gain the momentum to keep moving forward into the future.
