Marketing that conveys value: How can marketers effectively convey this in their cover letters?

In this blog post, I’ll share how to effectively convey your marketing philosophy and strategy in your cover letter, based on experiences where I aimed to convey brand value rather than just make sales.

My Growth Process

Growing up, I naturally learned that ‘meals’ are more than just a means of survival—they are fundamental to life. Under the guidance of my mother, who possessed exceptional culinary skills, and my father, who had deep expertise and know-how in traditional cuisine, a philosophy about food was naturally woven into our household. Even amidst the modern environment where exposure to instant or overly stimulating foods is common, my family consistently strived to maintain healthy eating habits, and I grew up in that atmosphere.
From a young age, I learned to savor the distinct flavors of various ingredients and became accustomed to meals that highlighted the natural essence of each component. As a result, my palate naturally became refined, and I took this for granted. However, upon entering kindergarten, I first noticed a difference with the outside world. While our home strictly adhered to a Korean-focused diet, kindergarten meals and my friends’ snacks often featured unfamiliar, stimulating flavors.
That’s not to say my parents strictly forbade or rejected instant foods or outside meals. Instead, they gradually eased those restrictions as I grew, carefully educating my palate to experience diverse flavors. They understood that outright bans can make forbidden things feel more alluring and lead to sneaking them, creating the opposite effect. So, they occasionally arranged family times to taste stimulating foods or commercially available items. Each time, I could personally experience the flavors and emotions those foods evoked and honestly express my reactions.
These experiences prevented me from becoming blindly drawn to or addicted to specific foods. Instead, they taught me to embrace even new tastes as part of my culinary repertoire. Consequently, I developed a balanced approach to eating that allowed me to experience diverse flavors without losing my center. I also came to understand early on that food transcends mere nutrition, significantly impacting quality of life and emotional well-being.
Thus, my formative years were not just about learning ‘how to eat well,’ but about cultivating a sensory perspective on the world through food. All these experiences at the table that shaped who I am today will remain a solid foundation supporting my own sensibilities and values throughout my future life.

School Days

Having a sensitive palate since childhood, I possessed a delicate sensibility that could easily detect even the slightest differences in food. So, during my school days when the cafeteria food wasn’t very satisfying, I naturally started bringing my own lunchbox. But it wasn’t that my mother took on all the work of preparing my lunch. Instead, we would set aside time together the night before to prepare the side dishes and cooked foods I would take to school the next day.
This process was more than just meal prep; it was a meaningful time for both of us. My mother taught me to cook and gave me the chance to learn, while I enjoyed the small privilege of assembling my lunchbox with the side dishes and ingredients I wanted. This way of sharing roles and working together turned out to be a satisfying ‘win-win’ for both of us.
When lunchtime came and my friends headed to the cafeteria, I would quietly stay behind in the classroom and open my lunchbox. Sometimes I wondered, ‘Am I being too sensitive?’ But friends who had tasted my mother’s lovingly prepared lunch once would generously understand, saying, “With a touch like this, what can you do?” Thanks to them, I was able to continue my lunchbox routine with a sense of pride, and that experience remains a very special memory for me.
As I prepared my own lunchbox, I gradually developed an interest in and sense of responsibility for my diet. It wasn’t just about balancing ‘nutrition’ and ‘taste’; over time, I started considering the harmony of colors, the pairing of ingredients, and even the arrangement, striving for more innovative compositions. It was like testing how much creative expression was possible within the limited space of a lunchbox, and I tried something new every time. When the results of that effort earned praise from my mother, a deep sense of satisfaction, hard to put into words, filled my heart.
Looking back now, those lunchboxes from that time were more than just a meal; they were a small canvas where I could express my own tastes and creativity. And those precious moments spent with my mother were invaluable experiences where I naturally learned how to enjoy life through cooking, how to express sincerity and personal taste.

On the Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality

I am someone who does not settle for my current level, always seeking new experiences and knowledge without hesitation. I consistently strive to improve, maintaining a humble attitude and reflecting on myself.
From a young age, I had abundant experiences with taste, and through my parents’ early education, I developed my senses faster than others. Thanks to this, I can confidently say I’ve reached a certain level of knowledge and sensory refinement, yet I also feel I still have a long way to go before reaching the word ‘perfect’.
The world is home to countless cultures and people, and accordingly, experiences of ‘taste’ are diverse. Moreover, since eating habits transcend mere taste to become a fundamental element of life, each person’s beliefs and definitions inevitably differ. Considering the depth of arguments and perspectives this can unfold, it’s difficult to be satisfied with my current level.
Furthermore, when I think of how many outstanding individuals are far ahead of me in this field, I feel a peculiar tension and my heart races. That feeling often becomes the reason and the driving force for me to push further.
However, because of this tendency of mine, I sometimes receive advice from those around me that “I seem to hide myself too much compared to my actual abilities.” While maintaining humility and politeness is certainly important, in this era of so-called ‘self-PR’ where one must appropriately showcase their capabilities to gain recognition, excessive modesty can actually lead to missing opportunities.
Such advice became a turning point for me. Realizing that excessive modesty can sometimes become a shackle that imprisons oneself, I began striving to promote myself based on objective data about my abilities. This led me to find more effective ways to communicate my capabilities.
Ultimately, my strength lies in my constant desire to learn and my humility in self-reflection, while my weakness is that this attitude can sometimes become excessive, preventing me from fully demonstrating my abilities. However, I believe the process of finding balance through this awareness is also part of growth. Moving forward, I aim to be someone who never stops learning, yet can confidently showcase my skills when necessary.

Career History

Growing up under my parents’ rigorous taste education from childhood, I developed a deep fascination with naturalistic food culture that values the inherent flavor of ingredients. This sensibility towards eating transcended mere preference, becoming a core value throughout my life. Upon joining ○○ Company, I gained the opportunity to fully realize this value.
After joining the company, I contemplated a food culture that could offer ‘healing’ to modern people accustomed to overly stimulating, seasoning-dependent flavors. Based on the warm keyword ‘Mother’s Table,’ I participated in improving a dietary project designed to alleviate urban fatigue. This project aimed to go beyond simply promoting our company’s food products; it sought to redefine the concept of dietary life as a whole and shift public perception.
In this project, I took a leading role, contributing not only idea proposals but also shaping the planning direction and executing specific implementation steps. I particularly focused on developing content and messages that resonated emotionally with people, moving beyond conventional marketing frameworks, striving to provide tangible opportunities for dietary improvement.
Through this experience, I not only grew as a member of the company but also found joy in applying my personal beliefs about food culture to practical work. Moreover, I found great fulfillment in guiding consumer perception toward enhancing quality of life rather than merely promoting products. This became a driving force for me to approach my work with an even more proactive and creative attitude.

Motivation for Applying and Aspirations After Joining

Having received meticulous taste education under my parents’ attentive care since childhood, I naturally developed a unique sensibility and insight regarding dietary habits. From a young age, I keenly felt how disconnected the food people encounter daily is from our authentic flavors. This awareness of the issue gradually shaped my own perspective on taste and food culture. My parents’ consistent support and guidance allowed me to deepen these capabilities significantly, ultimately leading me to pursue a career contributing to the public good through food.
Among all companies, yours clearly aligns with the values and goals I aspire to. This is why I applied with the fervent desire to join you through this opportunity. Your philosophy—not merely introducing foods and promoting their functions, but guiding people’s overall dietary habits toward healthier and more proper directions—perfectly matches the direction I pursue.
Within the broader framework of improving food culture, I prioritize strategic approaches that create tangible change and impact, going beyond simple marketing. I have experience contributing to food marketing and improving consumer awareness through various projects, and I aim to fully leverage the expertise and capabilities I’ve accumulated in this field at your company.
Upon joining, I will focus not merely on promotional or advertising activities, but on developing creative ideas and approaches that foster positive shifts in consumer awareness and food culture as a whole. Furthermore, I aspire to contribute to guiding everyone toward healthier, more valuable eating habits by driving a ‘paradigm shift’ that transcends existing stereotypes.
Food transcends being a mere consumer good; it is a crucial element that shapes people’s quality of life. I sincerely wish to join your company on the journey to create a better food culture. I will continuously learn and grow, striving to become a talent who contributes to both the company and society.
