This blog post introduces how to effectively incorporate specialized knowledge and deep insight into your resume when applying for corporate consulting roles.
Growth Process
My father, an English professor, and my mother, a rehabilitation medicine specialist, have always lived their lives with a research-oriented mindset in their respective fields. Our home library was filled with English literature and medical texts. As a child, whenever I had free time, I would naturally head to that library and read. My mother, finding this endearing, set up a dedicated bookshelf for me in one corner of the library. On Sundays, my father, mother, and I would each bring our books to the library, gathering to quietly immerse ourselves in our respective studies. Perhaps I inherited a balanced mix of my father’s humanities inclination and my mother’s science inclination.
When I reached my second year of high school and had to choose between the humanities and science tracks, I found myself in deep contemplation for quite some time. I was interested in both fields, and various aptitude tests showed equally balanced tendencies toward both humanities and science, making the decision difficult. Ultimately, I chose the humanities track because I felt slightly more drawn to social studies subjects. From that point on, my interest in social phenomena deepened significantly. Reading humanities books, I found it fascinating how problems in modern society could be approached and solved by drawing insights from classical texts. This experience cultivated a deeper perspective and insight into how I view objects and phenomena.
Thus, my childhood spent close to books under my parents’ influence, and my school years spent making my own choices and immersing myself at the crossroads of liberal arts and science, greatly shaped my way of thinking and values. The attitude of accepting diverse perspectives with an open mind, and the habit of analyzing problems from multiple angles, remain important assets in my life to this day.
School Days
During my school years, my father always emphasized, “You must become someone who knows how to put knowledge into practice.” His firm belief was that knowledge that isn’t translated into action is dead knowledge, devoid of any value. This teaching took deep root in my life, and I grew up striving to practice the moral values I learned in school within my daily life. I always led by example, and this attitude became a natural habit throughout elementary, middle, and high school, continuing uninterrupted into my university years. Academically, I pursued constant inquiry. While completing my master’s and doctoral degrees, I never allowed academic knowledge to remain mere theory; I continually pondered and sought to implement how it could be applied in the real world.
When I first majored in business administration in college, I broadened my understanding of corporate management as a whole. In that process, I realized one crucial fact: to become an outstanding company, a ‘management philosophy’ grounded in the company’s philosophy and values is essential, even more so than simple management strategies or techniques. This realization led me to conclude that a deeper understanding of applied disciplines like business administration requires more fundamental thinking and reflection. This, in turn, led me to choose philosophy as a minor. Studying philosophy taught me how invaluable it is not merely as an expansion of knowledge, but as a discipline that deepens one’s thinking. This insight ultimately led me to pursue and earn a PhD in philosophy.
What proved particularly valuable in studying philosophy was the insight and reasoning ability I possessed. Connecting the two fields of business and philosophy in my thinking was by no means a simple task. I felt the limitations of relying solely on the individual knowledge accumulated in each field, and it required constant reasoning and reflection to fuse and reconstruct them. While preparing my doctoral dissertation, I cultivated the power of deeper thinking and simultaneously spent time seriously contemplating how philosophical thought could be applied to real-world societal or corporate environments. The question, ‘How can this thinking be connected to reality?’ helped concretize the direction of my research. Ultimately, these accumulated reflections led to the achievement of publishing the best paper in the ○○ academic journal.
Building upon this accumulated academic foundation, I now work as a corporate consultant, striving to create tangible social value. Grounded in the dual pillars of business administration and philosophy, I live by my father’s words: “Be a person who puts knowledge into practice.” I will continue to dedicate myself to ensuring my reflection and action positively contribute to your company’s endeavors.
Regarding Strengths and Weaknesses
My most significant strength is my cautious and calm nature. When starting any task, I tend to deliberate thoroughly, consider various possibilities, and proceed step by step rather than making hasty decisions. This disposition served as a major strength in philosophical research, which involves constant questioning and deep reflection. I believe it provided the foundation enabling me to engage in profound thinking beyond mere curiosity.
This thoughtfulness and calmness have also positively influenced my interpersonal relationships. Among friends, I am regarded as a responsible person, often hearing comments like, “You can leave anything to ○○○ without worry.” My steady, centered demeanor has been crucial in earning trust.
On the other hand, despite appearing quiet on the surface, I also possess a sense of humor. I enjoy injecting appropriate humor into serious situations to lighten the mood. While outwardly calm, I possess a distinct ‘comedic instinct’ within. I firmly believe laughter is a vital source of energy in life. Especially during tough or exhausting times, I consciously try to think of something funny or laugh out loud to comfort myself. This approach has become a crucial method for my own recovery.
Of course, my personality doesn’t always work to my advantage. I tend to be quite honest, speaking my mind without reservation. Initially, I believed telling the truth was always best, but at some point, I realized that honesty could also hurt others. Now, I strive to be more mindful of the other person’s perspective. I’m learning to convey my genuine feelings without deception, yet express them in a more tactful way that’s easier for the other person to accept.
Moving forward, I aim to harmoniously refine my personality traits—prudence, humor, and honesty—to grow into a better person. Rather than trying to fix my shortcomings, I seek to understand and adjust them while maintaining an attitude of respecting myself as I am. I believe this process will transform me into a deeper and broader person.
Career Experience (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)
While pursuing my doctoral degree, I taught Principles of Economics and Philosophy of Management in the university’s Business School. For the liberal arts course, I endeavored to connect philosophy to real life, striving to convey it to students from a more practical perspective. The aspect I pondered most during these lectures was how to effectively convey the knowledge I possessed so that others could properly understand it. What I realized through this process was that to truly help someone understand something, one must go beyond mere information transfer to build empathy, and this requires a deep understanding of the other person.
What I observed while actually teaching was that many students treated university classes as just ‘classes’ in and of themselves. However, if classes are disconnected from real life, university education loses its fundamental value. Guided by this awareness, I strove to connect lecture content to real-world life as much as possible. Through this, I hoped students would grow into practical intellectuals capable of proactive engagement in society, rather than merely attending classes for credits. Ultimately, I believe teaching should not only convey knowledge but also provide direction in life and broaden the framework of thought.
The diverse practical experience and educational expertise I’ve accumulated through this dual pursuit of research and teaching are my greatest assets. I hope these experiences will be meaningfully applied not only in academic spheres but also in practical work and society. Moving forward, I wish to contribute to your company based on these capabilities. Through practical thinking grounded in expertise and people-centered communication skills, I aim to create opportunities for growth alongside many others.
Motivation and Aspirations
I have long strived to become a ‘practical intellectual’. My goal has been to become someone who not only accumulates knowledge but also connects it to practical action for society. To achieve this, I believed deep understanding of society and a sense of responsibility were essential alongside specialized knowledge. This conviction allowed me to immerse myself in academia and grow, even amidst difficult and challenging circumstances.
My field of research is management philosophy. I believe a company’s identity and direction ultimately depend on its underlying philosophy. Management philosophy is not merely a slogan or catchphrase; it is the core that determines what values a company pursues and how it will grow. Companies with weak or ambiguous management philosophies are prone to wavering in their organizational goal-setting, which can quickly lead to operational chaos and long-term instability. Conversely, companies with a solid and consistent philosophy can unite the capabilities of their members and drive sustainable growth. Guided by this belief, I have built expertise in analyzing management strategies centered on a company’s management philosophy and proposing corresponding direction and solutions.
From this perspective, I believe the management philosophy of the company I join is also crucial. When the values pursued by the company and those aspired to by its members diverge, it becomes difficult to expect synergy across the entire organization, no matter how capable the talent assembled. In that sense, the fact that your company’s management philosophy and goals deeply align with my values gives me great confidence. The value of ‘○○’ that your company pursues is consistent with the direction I have studied and researched thus far, leading me to believe this is an organization where we can grow together, beyond mere employment.
I will dedicate my utmost effort to generate tangible results based on your company’s management philosophy. I wish to pour my expertise and passion into contributing to the realization of your company’s vision. As a practitioner of knowledge, if given the opportunity to become a member who delivers value through action rather than words, I will repay this trust with continuous self-development and a sincere attitude.
