How can the grit forged in rural life be applied to a general office position?

This blog post explores how to effectively weave the grit and diligence cultivated through rural life and work experience into a general office job application.

My Background

“Dreaming of Seoul from the Countryside”
Born as the youngest daughter to parents who farmed in the countryside, I grew up as a resourceful and diligent child. As the youngest of one brother and two sisters, I was taught to cherish sibling bonds. My parents hoped I would grow into a confident person who never felt ashamed of their occupation. My parents, who ran a citron orchard and sweet potato farm, wanted their children to understand the value of labor and learn life’s fundamentals through hands-on experience. So, until I graduated high school, I often helped my parents by digging sweet potatoes in the fields. This experience remains meaningful to me, far beyond simple farm work.
Of course, my parents didn’t want their children to work long hours. They simply wanted us to see their work firsthand, touch it with our hands, and sweat to learn respect for labor and the preciousness of life. Thanks to this, I learned rural life physically from a young age, to the point where I didn’t need separate rural volunteer activities, and that experience remains the foundation of my life today.
From a young age, I loved reading books and enjoyed writing on the computer. But that was merely a hobby; my dream had always been to ‘attend university in Seoul’. However, my parents firmly opposed my going to Seoul, saying leaving home would mean hardship. Though I had grown up as a ‘good daughter’ who never defied my parents’ wishes, my desire to go to Seoul was something I couldn’t easily let go of. So, in the end, I stood firm against my parents’ opposition and refused to back down from my decision to attend a university in Seoul.
After numerous conversations and attempts at persuasion, my parents and I found a compromise: attending a junior college. My desire to quickly enter society and secure a good job mirrored my parents’ wishes, so I chose a junior college, which allowed me to finish university quickly and start my career. Although my grades were quite good, meaning I didn’t necessarily need to choose a vocational college, I respected the decision and studied even harder. Thanks to this, I received scholarships throughout my entire two-year enrollment period. By diligently completing my studies, I was able to take the first step toward my dream.

Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality

My greatest strength is my strong sense of responsibility. Since my school days, I’ve always given my utmost effort to any task assigned to me, faithfully carrying out roles like class president or secretary with a sense of responsibility. I possess the tenacity to see through anything I set my mind to, often earning praise that I can be trusted with any task. Even in unexpected situations, I handle things calmly, quickly grasp the flow of work, and push tasks forward methodically, consistently earning the trust of those around me.
Another strength is my meticulous nature. Starting my life away from home during college meant I had to manage and take responsibility for my own life more often, and through that process, I naturally developed the habit of keeping records. To manage my budget efficiently, I kept a detailed record of my spending. To ensure I didn’t miss important matters, I always carried a diary and made a habit of taking notes. Thanks to these habits, I could attend to even the smallest details without oversight and maintain a systematic lifestyle.
My responsible and meticulous nature has evolved beyond a simple disposition; it has become my way of life and my professional attitude. In any task, I strive to give my absolute best to achieve personal satisfaction while simultaneously maintaining trust with those around me. Moving forward, I aim to leverage these strengths, faithfully fulfill any role assigned to me, and continue growing.

School Life

“Short and sweet, packed with substance”
Rather than pursuing deep academic studies for a long time, I wanted to enter society quickly and gain practical experience. That’s why I chose to attend a technical college and major in Industrial Management. Since I had to learn in two years what others learn in four, focusing on practical skills, I knew I couldn’t afford to miss anything. I made sure never to skip a class. Simultaneously, I formed study groups with classmates to enhance mutual understanding and create an environment that fostered greater academic focus.
After regular classes ended, I attended special lectures for certification preparation or studied independently to build my skills. This led to obtaining certifications as a Management Consultant, Word Processor, and ITQ Excel Specialist. Although I received a scholarship, I felt guilty about relying on my parents financially even as a university student. During breaks, I made time to work part-time jobs to earn my own spending money.
Even though it was a short period, I actively participated in club activities with the mindset of ‘doing everything I could during my college years.’ Although I was only active during my freshman year, I learned responsibility by fulfilling my assigned role within the organization and adhering to its rules and etiquette. This experience instilled in me a sense of belonging as a community member and the value of cooperation, which remains a crucial foundation in my life today.
Studying alongside mature students of diverse ages, a characteristic of vocational colleges, was also a valuable experience for me. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds allowed me to build broad relationships, which significantly broadened my perspective on the world.
I can confidently say that my two short yet intensely packed years of college were a time for building essential attitudes and practical skills needed before entering society, going beyond mere academic achievement. True to the saying “short, intense, and substantial,” my college life was a valuable journey condensed with determination toward my goals and efforts for growth.

Career History

After graduating from university, my first professional experience began at a savings bank. Initially hired as a one-year contract employee, I was recognized for my diligence and sense of responsibility, leading to conversion to a permanent position where I worked for a total of four years. Early on, I handled customer service in the lobby and managed various customer complaints. Though I was in my early twenties at the time, listening to and resolving issues for elderly customers was an important role entrusted to me. While I sometimes faced difficulties due to emotional responses or unreasonable demands, I reminded myself of my parents, who had always lived diligently in the countryside, and strived to treat customers with even greater kindness and sincerity.
Given the nature of the secondary financial sector, many customers were sensitive to interest rates, making attracting deposits the most crucial core task. Since employee performance was closely tied to results, I also actively engaged with customers and diligently pursued various approaches to attract deposits. I wanted to broaden my knowledge of finance beyond simply repeating routine counter tasks. Accordingly, I consistently participated in financial education alongside my work, building knowledge about various financial products like insurance and stocks.
These efforts positively impacted my communication with customers. By continuing conversations based on more specialized knowledge, I gained customer trust and naturally formed deeper relationships. When customers and I exchanged information and I received compliments like “a kind and smart employee,” I felt a great sense of fulfillment. That experience was a valuable time that allowed me to learn the value of conveying sincerity and building trust within customer relationships, going beyond simple financial tasks.
