This blog post introduces how to write a compelling cover letter for a development role even without practical experience. Focus on collaboration, hands-on experience, and personality strengths.
Growth Process
“Dedicated Parents to Our Family”
My father, who worked at a trading company, left for work early in the morning and returned late at night. Yet, his love and dedication to our family remained unwavering. He always felt sorry for the lack of time spent together amidst his busy schedule, so he cherished even the brief moments we could share as a family. Growing up naturally feeling my father’s warm heart, I was able to grow up with a sense of gratitude rather than regret over his absence.
My mother, who respected my father and always steadfastly protected our family, emphasized to me the importance of sincerity and honesty. Rather than forcing me to do anything, she guided me to make my own judgments and take action, which helped me develop independence and a sense of responsibility. Both my parents led our household from their respective roles, showing mutual consideration and trust. Their example naturally instilled in me the value that ‘family is about filling each other’s gaps and growing together.’ Consequently, I too came to feel it natural to view others with warmth and extend a helping hand to those in need.
Learning tennis from a young age was also a special part of my growth. Tennis was the sport my father enjoyed whenever he found time amidst his busy work schedule, and I naturally joined him during those moments. While we lacked time for many conversations, playing tennis allowed me to connect with my father and feel his love firsthand. The times we held rackets and hit balls back and forth remain vivid in my memory as brief yet profound moments of deep connection with my father.
Growing up within the family circle, learning trust, consideration, responsibility, and self-reliance, has become the solid foundation that shaped who I am today. I believe this experience will also serve as valuable groundwork in my future relationships with others.
Strengths and Weaknesses
“Spirit of Challenge and Thoroughness in Task Completion”
I possess a strong spirit of challenge and the tenacity to see any task I start through to the end. True to the saying, ‘If not success, then experience,’ I value the lessons and experiences gained in the process, regardless of whether the outcome is success or failure, and I never hesitate to take on any challenge. Rather than fearing failure, I firmly believe it is an opportunity for growth. In practice, once I begin a task, I tend to stay focused until completion, often hearing compliments about my diligence from those around me. Approaching tasks with this attitude has frequently led to positive outcomes, and these experiences have solidified my confidence.
I also place great importance on principles and rules, consistently adhering to norms. Throughout my school and military service, I consistently approached my duties with a responsible attitude, striving to set an exemplary standard for others. Particularly during my military service as a squad leader, I meticulously managed the preparation process for every inspection, personally ensuring each junior member was ready. As a result, we successfully completed training without a single member falling behind, and I led a squad that earned the trust and praise of our superiors. In this way, I have consistently demonstrated leadership based on responsibility within communities and faithfully fulfilled my assigned roles.
I have a personality where I cannot rest easy unless I personally verify important matters. This applied not only to personal affairs but also to team assignments during my university years. After each member completed their assigned sections and we combined them to finalize the project, I meticulously reviewed the entire content once more. Through this process, I identified and corrected errors, big and small, thereby enhancing the final product’s quality. This meticulous and precise approach earned me the nickname “Eagle Eyes” among my friends at school.
Thus, I am someone who does not back down from challenges, thoroughly completes assigned tasks, and earns trust within a community based on a strong sense of responsibility. I believe my meticulous and diligent nature extends beyond being a personal strength; it positively influences those I work with. Moving forward, I aim to build on these strengths to grow into someone who can be trusted and relied upon in any environment.
School Life
“Learning Society Through Collaboration”
At university, majoring in Computer Engineering allowed me to build diverse expertise across the entire spectrum of computer applications, starting from the most fundamental computer architecture and extending to application software. Understanding how computers operate and learning software development and application at each academic level gradually solidified my dream of becoming a developer. It was a process of acquiring a balanced understanding of both theory and practical skills, going beyond mere technical proficiency.
One of the most distinctive features of university courses was the frequent emphasis on collaborative team projects over individual assignments. While solo work required only one’s own time and effort, team projects offered a crucial learning experience in coordinating individual ideas and collaborating. Though socializing with friends had always been enjoyable from elementary through high school, university teamwork transcended simple camaraderie. Setting shared goals and creating tangible results together yielded a far greater sense of accomplishment. It was a meaningful joy distinct from mere ‘play’.
Through these experiences, I realized that university life isn’t just about acquiring specialized knowledge; it’s a crucial preparatory phase for developing the group activities and communication skills needed for professional life. While working on team assignments, researching materials, and creating deliverables, I cultivated the ability to listen to others’ opinions and collaborate efficiently. This is an essential process for performing tasks in the workplace later on, and the fact that I could practice it beforehand within the university setting was highly significant.
While preparing the assignment, a situation arose where everyone hesitated to take the lead, and I ended up becoming the team leader. I focused on coordinating the diverse opinions of my teammates and creating an assignment that highlighted each person’s individuality. Gathering friends who preferred solitude in one place wasn’t easy at first, but as we worked together on the assignment, I saw them gradually open up and propose better solutions. This allowed me to truly grasp the meaning of ‘working together’. This process remained a great joy and source of fulfillment for me.
During the break, I applied for an internship to directly experience how the theoretical knowledge I had learned could be applied in a real-world setting. There, I handled essential practical elements like installing and operating Citrix, and configuring external and internal IPs, gaining vivid experience hard to find in books. The virtual server design work, in particular, was immensely helpful for developing practical skills as a developer.
I also participated in the department’s mentoring project, where I received advice from developer mentors working in the field and had time to concretely evaluate my career path. I gained a systematic understanding of the roles developers take on in actual companies, how they design structures, and how they perform programming. This became an opportunity to reassess and refine my capabilities.
Thus, my university experience went beyond simply attending classes and taking exams. It was a valuable time spent learning the importance of collaboration while working together toward shared goals, and gaining practical experience that strengthened my career confidence. I believe I laid the foundation at university to become someone who can collaborate flexibly and work responsibly in any environment.
