Shipping Industry Self-Introduction Letter: How to Highlight Global Competence and Field Experience?

This blog post introduces methods to effectively incorporate global competence and field experience into your shipping industry self-introduction letter, along with key points to make it stand out.

Growth Process

My parents, who endured many hardships to secure our current home, are icons of honesty and diligence. As a typical hard worker, I believe I was greatly influenced by them. My parents started a small laundry shop, working tirelessly from dawn until late evening to care for their customers’ clothes. It took nearly a year for their meticulousness and thoroughness to become known throughout the neighborhood. By steadily saving money, they now operate a fairly large-scale laundry shop with ten washing machines. Yet, even now, my parents consistently care for their customers’ clothes with the same dedication. I believe this dedication and sincerity are why regular customers keep coming back. Watching our parents like this up close, my sister and I respect them deeply. My sister took on the role of mother, stepping in for our busy parents. Her help was crucial in ensuring I had all my school supplies ready and could focus diligently on my studies. Watching my sister, who never forgot to consider others, helped me cultivate a heart of consideration and respect for others as well.
Being larger than my peers from a young age, I often heard suggestions to take up wrestling. By chance, my middle school had a wrestling club, and after the coach invited me to join, I began wrestling. The wrestling I’d seen on TV during holidays didn’t look that difficult. I thought it was just about being strong, but once I started, I realized that was a huge misconception. Wrestling required many techniques; it wasn’t a sport where just having a good build was an advantage. The more techniques I learned, the more interested I became in wrestling. As a result, my skills grew faster than my friends’. Winning top prizes at events like the National Youth Sports Festival, I became a promising young wrestler. My parents opposed my plan to attend OO High School, renowned for its wrestling program. Hoping I would focus on academics, they wanted me to become someone dedicated to studying rather than wrestling. While it was disappointing to give up wrestling, I believed that focusing on my studies, which I had previously neglected, would also greatly benefit my life. Had I continued wrestling back then, I might never have discovered the joy of learning. Starting my studies late brought me immense pleasure.

School Days

Having neglected my studies during middle school due to my obsession with wrestling, I restarted my education in high school against my parents’ wishes. My lack of a solid foundation meant I received dismal scores on my first high school exams. Through sports, I learned competitive drive and perseverance. Receiving that terrible report card ignited my competitive spirit. I had resolved to quit wrestling and focus on studying, and the thought of getting such a poor score was unbearable. Once I made up my mind, I was determined never to receive such a shameful score again, so I switched into full study mode. I chose to learn from the basics, knowing it would take time. My sister was my greatest help in studying. She consistently ranked first in the entire school and could pinpoint and explain exactly what I didn’t understand. With her help, I gradually became more comfortable with studying. I found great enjoyment in applying memorized concepts to solve problems and getting the correct answers. As I found enjoyment in my studies, my grades naturally improved. After two and a half years of immersing myself in my studies, I achieved the miracle of ranking 23rd in the entire school. Based on these results, I was able to enroll in the Business Administration Department at ○○ University.
Upon entering university, I diligently studied my major subjects as well as English and Chinese. This was because, dreaming of becoming a global business leader, I believed I needed not only business knowledge but also strong language skills. Furthermore, believing that becoming a business leader required extensive social experience, I took on numerous part-time jobs. Among these, my part-time work at the onboard shop of OO Shipping stands out in my memory. I bonded with high school students on their field trip to Jeju Island, chatting with them, and as someone who had entered university before them, I was able to share many helpful insights. Furthermore, by analyzing products popular among passengers, I gained practical experience in business essentials through real-life application.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I possess a competitive drive and tenacity. Additionally, my ability to adapt quickly to new environments is a significant strength. During university, I used money earned from part-time work to travel through Europe. I believe my adaptability was key to navigating this nearly two-month-long trip without major difficulties. I didn’t shy away from unfamiliar surroundings; instead, I quickly familiarized myself with the local environment. This allowed me to receive considerable help from those around me. While traveling, I engaged in conversations with locals and formed friendships with people of diverse nationalities. My ability to adapt swiftly to new environments stemmed from my easygoing nature—I’m not picky about food—and my proficient English skills. I have an open-minded attitude toward food. Even though European cuisine was often rich and heavy, I never once thought the food didn’t suit my taste. Furthermore, my fluent English allowed me to easily find destinations and receive help through communication with people.
I have a neat personality. Being highly organized, I feel satisfied only when everything is in its place. I believe this stems from the habit I developed since childhood of organizing my own belongings. While my meticulous tidiness is an asset—saving time by efficiently locating items—I recognize it can appear obsessive if taken too far. I am not someone who imposes this trait on others. I will strive to minimize any negative aspects so that my strengths can be maximized.

Career Experience (or experience demonstrating work capabilities)

I was responsible for managing business plans and performance metrics at ○○. My primary duties involved drafting the following year’s business plan, sharing target achievements, and analyzing the company’s profit and loss. I believe this was an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills in the shipping industry. My senior advised me, as a new employee, that real-world experience was essential for achieving good results, encouraging me to visit the field frequently. Initially, I questioned whether someone handling office work like me needed to understand field operations. However, understanding the reality through field work enabled me to handle office tasks more practically. Recognized for my abilities, I was promoted to Deputy Manager and worked as part of the ○○ Strategic Planning Team. I handled registration procedures with the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to ensure legal services and also processed import customs clearance for vessels.

Motivation for Application and Aspirations

I believe shipping-related businesses must increase demand through new packages and enhance productivity by improving service quality. As an industry directly tied to customer safety, restoring customer trust in shipping is the top priority in the current social climate. Shipping companies have traditionally not been highly visible to the general public. However, they are both demand-side players in the vessel market and supply-side players in the cargo market. As pivotal intermediaries in the national industry, they are a source of great pride not only domestically but also in the international market. I believe your company is precisely the kind of enterprise that can achieve further growth based on its existing industrial foundation. I applied because I believe I would be happy to apply my capabilities in such an environment.
If given the opportunity to become a member of your company, I will exert my utmost effort to demonstrate my abilities. I am a globally-minded professional proficient in English and Chinese. Furthermore, I possess practical work experience in the shipping business sector. I feel confident in my ability to succeed. I will approach my duties with confidence while maintaining humility, giving my best effort.
