This blog post introduces a sample resume I wrote based on my experience and capabilities, addressing the topic: “Why Should Companies Hire Me for an R&D Position in the Food and Beverage Industry?”
Reasons for Applying and Why You Should Hire Me
“I am a challenger.”
There is one reason I should join ○○: I am a person who thrives on taking on challenges.
During my university years, I attended school while simultaneously running a startup. I have always approached new endeavors with enthusiasm, especially when the process, no matter how difficult, allowed me to feel myself growing and developing. Among these challenges, the most memorable was my ‘lunchbox startup’. I drew inspiration from the reality that many university students are interested in dieting but struggle to prepare every meal. It was common for them to skip meals or settle for triangle rice balls or instant foods amidst their busy schedules. I created ‘diet lunchboxes’ with menus considering health, nutrition, and weight management, and promoted them primarily in dormitories.
The response exceeded expectations. Thanks to the convenience and health benefits, word spread quickly, and the profits were substantial. In fact, the results were so good that I earned enough to cover two semesters’ tuition through this one-semester venture. However, balancing studies and work proved practically difficult, and the lack of formal certification made official business registration impossible, forcing me to eventually shut down the business. Yet, this experience taught me how significant a competitive edge can be found by seeking out ‘areas with clear demand’ that others aren’t pursuing.
I am someone who doesn’t just want to live life, but to live it ‘enjoyably’. I don’t view eating as merely filling my stomach; I ponder how to make it more delicious and enjoyable, which naturally led me to explore great restaurants. Sharing these experiences on my blog resonated with many people. My passion is to never do anything half-heartedly, and to make even small things special. This is my driving force.
Thus, I am someone who enjoys challenging myself and grows through those challenges. If you hire me as a new employee at ○○, I will be a talent who breathes vitality into the organization with an unconventional, creative perspective and a spirit of challenge. I will be a member who aligns with your company’s values, someone who doesn’t rest on results but enjoys the process and constantly seeks new paths. I look forward to working with you.
Growth Journey
“The Story of a Curious Girl”
As a child, while my peers played with rubber bands or were engrossed in bubble games, I would hole up in the science lab, absorbed in experiments. I enjoyed running around fields to play, but what fascinated me even more was conducting experiments—burning things with an alcohol lamp and observing the ashes. I eagerly anticipated days with experiments, and when my grade level had no scheduled experiments, I would volunteer to assist other grades—my curiosity was that strong.
When I got to play with the results of my experiments, like the bouncy balls or pull-toys I made myself, alongside my friends, I felt immensely proud and joyful. Though I spent much time in the science lab, I never missed out on running and playing outside either. Observing the strange forms of various creatures in nature and examining unknown grasses and insects up close gave me the thrill of encountering another world. I was always a child whose eyes sparkled with curiosity about the world, preferring hands-on learning over sitting quietly.
However, this inquisitive nature didn’t immediately translate into academic achievement. My grades weren’t particularly good until middle school. But when I entered high school, things changed. I discovered the joy of learning and exploring diverse knowledge, and especially found fascination in science subjects, gradually becoming captivated by the academic world itself. By my senior year, my father’s promise—“If you get into your desired university, I’ll send you on an overseas trip”—became my motivation, driving me to study even more diligently. As a result, my total score soared by a remarkable 120 points, allowing me to proudly enroll in the Food and Nutrition Department at my target university.
My growth extended far beyond academic improvement. The relentless curiosity and spirit of inquiry that fuel my life today were cultivated during this period, as was the attitude of never taking opportunities granted to me lightly. Just as those small experiments in the science lab became pivotal moments that shaped the direction of my life, I intend to continue walking my path steadfastly, driven by my passion for learning and spirit of challenge.
Passionate Experiences
“Through studying abroad and extracurricular activities, I came to feel food.”
The first of my passionate experiences was ‘studying abroad’. Studying abroad in the Netherlands for two years gave me the opportunity to deeply experience food and culture in a unique environment. I chose the Netherlands, not the US or an English-speaking country, for one simple reason: it is the birthplace of cheese. I could taste various types of cheese affordably, observe and experience firsthand the unique system of distribution and sales, and gain many ideas worth introducing or applying in Korea.
I actually conducted experiments locally. The Netherlands has markets that open periodically, similar to Korea’s five-day markets, selling various foods and fruits. I once visited the Dutch consulate for a week, obtained official permission, completed the paperwork, and then made and sold two dishes at the market: pancakes and Korean-style pancakes (buchimgae) topped with kimchi and cheese. The somewhat unusual combination attracted locals’ attention, drawing quite a crowd. By observing people’s reactions to these two dishes—similar yet distinct in feel—I could compare which nationalities preferred which style. Building on this experience, I entered a thesis competition at the end of my fourth year and won the contest. This experience went beyond mere experimentation; it instilled confidence that proactive action can yield substantial results. Simultaneously, it was a valuable time to directly experience diverse cultural palates and food cultures.
Another passionate experience was ‘external activities’. As a Korean Food Culture Ambassador, I participated in a 7-day camp tasting and experiencing foods from across the country alongside international students. During the camp, experiencing Korea’s traditional food and culinary culture alongside diverse people allowed me to deeply contemplate what traditions must be preserved for Korean food to expand globally, and what aspects require change and development. It remains a cherished time, beyond mere experience, for understanding culture and sentiment.
Through this process, I also built friendships with people of various nationalities. Interacting with them went beyond simple cultural exchange; it greatly helped me learn about and understand their countries’ food cultures. A particularly memorable moment was when an Indian friend invited me to celebrate a festival together at the embassy. The food, the atmosphere, and the people that day were all special. In that space where Korean and Indian food coexisted, I felt once again that food is culture.
Through my study abroad experience and external activities, I was able to directly see, taste, and feel diverse food cultures, broadening my own perspective. I am confident this has become a significant foundation for my future career and life direction. These two experiences deeply taught me that food transcends mere sustenance; it is a medium connecting people and an important means of conveying culture and emotion.
Self-Development
“Developing Language Skills.”
Above all, I am constantly striving to develop my language abilities. Especially since ○○ is a global company expanding beyond Korea, I believe language proficiency is essential to work at your company. Accordingly, I can use English, Japanese, and Spanish as a foundation, and I aim to continuously hone and broaden these language skills.
Through studying diverse languages and applying them in real life, I constantly explore the potential to introduce not only famous products from around the world but also niche regional foods and unique items to the Korean market. Conversely, I continually ponder the strategies and approaches needed to export Korea’s excellent products overseas, never neglecting attempts to find practical methods.
At the core of all these activities lies ‘language ability,’ which I recognize not merely as a means of communication, but as a vital tool for understanding and connecting with the world. I will continue learning diverse languages and cultures without pause, always approaching them with a mindset of constant learning. Language is potential itself, and I will steadily develop myself to unlock that potential.
Professional Ethos
There’s a fable I once heard that goes like this. One day, a mother and daughter visited a udon restaurant and ordered just one bowl of udon. Finding this odd, the owner asked why. The mother and daughter cautiously replied that they didn’t have enough money. The owner, sensing their distress, charged them for one bowl but served them a portion nearly twice as large, prepared with great care. I believe this story holds meaning beyond simple goodwill. Understanding the customer’s situation and feelings, and responding with appropriate consideration and sincerity—I believe this is the very essence of professionalism and the attitude one should have toward the work of food.
If I were to work at ○○ within the ○○ group, I would like to approach food with the same mindset as this udon shop owner, putting the customer first. Some meals can be a healing experience for someone, while others might be the only meal a tired part-timer manages to eat after a long shift. That’s why I won’t take any meal lightly; I will constantly strive and experiment to make food even more delicious. I aspire to be someone who can convey sincerity through thoughtful planning and serving, offering a small comfort to customers’ days.
If I am fortunate enough to join ○○, I will not only thoroughly understand and communicate our existing diverse food offerings but also embrace challenges in developing new dishes. Above all, I will always keep our customers’ tastes and life circumstances in mind, accurately identifying the products and categories they desire to propose and deliver the right food for them. I will strive to create meals that convey genuine care to our customers and to share ○○’s values with more people. Thank you.
