How to Leverage Practical Skills Gained from Part-Time Work in Your Finance Resume

This blog post introduces how to effectively incorporate the practical skills and sense of responsibility required for finance roles into your resume, based on part-time experiences like customer service and cash handling.

My Background

Growing up, my family was always financially strained. Even to get school supplies or a workbook, I had to persuade my parents repeatedly and beg earnestly just to scrape together some pocket money. For my family back then, the greatest value was ‘survival’; life was so heavy that anything beyond that felt like a luxury. While my friends naturally enjoyed private tutoring like cram schools or workbooks, I focused solely on getting the most out of my school classes and had no choice but to choose the path of self-study. Thanks to my persistence in never giving up and hanging on until the end, I was able to earn praise as a top student. Yet, when I heard comments like, “It’s really impressive you get such good grades without going to cram school,” I wasn’t entirely happy. Because I hadn’t chosen those disadvantages willingly.
My parents, more than anyone, deeply regretted the reality that they couldn’t provide more for their children. My younger sibling, less mature, often compared our family circumstances with friends and lamented, “Why can’t I even enjoy these things?” But as the older sibling, I fully understood my parents’ worries and pain. Truthfully, our family lived each day in such desperate straits that even lamenting felt like a luxury. Though young, I felt a sense of duty to quickly fulfill my role as a responsible family member, rather than just being a child who only wanted to be protected under my parents’ care. With that mindset, I embraced my immature younger sibling, striving always to live my best as a sister and as my parents’ dependable eldest daughter. Faced with a heavy reality my parents struggled to bear alone, I tried my hardest to fulfill my role, hoping to be even a little help.
Thus, while my childhood was far from affluent, within it I learned an attitude of perseverance, a mindset of doing my best within given circumstances, and a deep sense of responsibility toward my family. Looking back now, I feel that all those experiences were precious foundations that shaped who I am today.

School Life

My school years were a time when I always tried my hardest to respond to the life and circumstances given to me. Even living in a financially strained household, I didn’t want to hear the phrase, “Well, that’s just how it had to be.” So, I studied harder than anyone else, strove to maintain my own sense of dignity, and pushed myself to the limit to preserve my self-respect. Unlike friends who studied for vague reasons like “I have to work hard to get into a good university,” “My parents told me to,” or “Adults say it’s good,” I lived each day with a more solid motivation and enthusiasm. That attitude became a solid foundation that allowed me to consistently maintain excellent grades. I knew better than anyone else. I knew that if I gave up even a little or started to waver, I could spiral out of control and fall.
My strict self-discipline to hide the gloomy home atmosphere and my relentless academic dedication soon forged me into a stronger person. As a result of these efforts, I earned deep trust from the adults and teachers around me, allowing me to pave a more stable path in my life. The more I strove to face the world with an upright posture, the more connections naturally grew with those who recognized my sincerity and effort. My attitude of diligently engaging in every school activity without neglect left a positive impression on those who observed me. This earnest and diligent posture was not a calculated act but my fundamental life stance. Ultimately, my demeanor and attitude themselves became the most effective ‘advertisement’ for who I am.
This strategy-less strategy also shone brightly during my university years. Through relationships with seniors and professors, I gradually wove a robust network of connections that would support my life, enabling me to navigate interpersonal dynamics with greater intelligence and balance. It wasn’t just my grades; my attitude and diligence earned the trust of those around me, becoming a true asset in my life. My school years were not merely a time for studying, but a precious period of growth where I constantly honed myself and expanded my potential.

Personality Introduction

I am someone who adapts quickly to given realities and demonstrates keen awareness in changing situations. Since my student days, through various part-time job experiences, I learned to identify my role and position within a group and to flexibly navigate situations with tact. Rather than rigidly adhering solely to my own principles, I have cultivated an attitude of strategically approaching situations by understanding the tendencies of those around me and the dynamics of relationships, considering what approach would be most effective. Through this process, I was able to communicate smoothly and build relationships even with people I initially felt distant from. Each of these experiences accumulated within me, becoming the foundation that shaped who I am today.
Thus, I experienced faster and deeper growth not by merely understanding and interacting with people in my head, but by directly confronting challenges and learning through experience. Though the part-time jobs I took during college were chosen to balance academics and livelihood, those accumulated hours naturally taught me practical interpersonal skills applicable even after entering society. This adaptability extends beyond professional settings; it has significantly helped me foster smoother interactions in private settings, gradually expanding my influence and sense of belonging.
I am well aware that in a society where people intermingle, forming relationships and building friendships with the majority simply by being one’s unprocessed, authentic self is never easy. Therefore, I believe it is necessary to flexibly adapt my role to diverse situations and people’s needs, revealing my presence like a chameleon in the right place at the right time. This flexibility and practical sense, allowing me to blend in my own way according to the environment, will undoubtedly be a great asset as I continue to build diverse relationships and grow within society.

Life Philosophy

No matter how difficult or exhausting the moment, I want to live a life without giving up. As a child, I often found myself deeply troubled, wondering if I could ever be as happy as others, even if I worked hard, given the reality where simply getting by day to day was a struggle. Unlike others who steadily achieved success in somewhat stable environments, the walls and gaps of reality I had to overcome felt overwhelmingly large.
Yet I held onto the belief that no matter how distant the mountain seemed, if I took one step at a time, silently and steadily, I would eventually reach the summit. Grounded in that belief, I relentlessly worked to build my capabilities through study and diverse part-time experiences, ultimately reaching my current position. I realized what truly matters is not trying to climb in one leap, but focusing on each daily step and advancing with sincerity.
Moving forward, no matter what trials block my path, I will choose a life of perseverance. Just as small achievements accumulate to create great change, I believe the attitude of living each day with diligence will ultimately make me stronger. Even as I write this now, I take one step forward today to become a better version of myself than yesterday.

Reasons for Applying and Future Aspirations

Growing up in somewhat difficult family circumstances as a child, I still had to strive to not lose hope, reflecting on my given reality and innate conditions. When I consider what it would have been like to be born into an environment where I worried about my next meal or where survival itself was threatened, the mere fact that I could begin my life here in South Korea—a place where opportunities are relatively granted in proportion to one’s effort—was itself a source of gratitude and hope for me. I perceived this as ‘fate,’ and it was this hope that allowed me to move forward. In this context, your company’s catchphrase, ‘Providing Opportunities,’ deeply resonated with me, naturally leading to my sincere interest and application.
If given the opportunity to work at your company, I wish to demonstrate through action that I can create broader possibilities through opportunities earned by my own will and effort, rather than relying on innate circumstances. Though there was a time when I set aside my dreams and vision, questioning whether sacrifice for my family might be the only path, I have always wanted to forge my life through challenge, not escape. My work at your company would be an extension of that life philosophy. I am prepared to approach it with even greater sincerity, building upon the opportunity I have so earnestly grasped. I intend to give my utmost to my responsibilities, grow continuously, and treat this not merely as survival but as a process of true self-realization. When given an ‘opportunity,’ I am ready to seize it and repay it with greater responsibility and results.
