In this blog post, we explore why communication skills are crucial in the research-focused pharmaceutical industry and how to effectively incorporate them into your resume.
Growth Process
During my youth, I developed a deep passion for sports. Among them, baseball was my absolute favorite, and becoming the next Chan Ho Park was my childhood dream. Fortunately, I gained the opportunity to join a baseball team, which was a tremendous stroke of luck in my life. Not only did it give me the potential to become a baseball player, but it also became a pivotal moment for learning important values for navigating life through team sports. Being part of a team meant more than just playing games together; it was about learning how to cooperate and communicate for the team’s success. This process proved to be invaluable experience that later greatly benefited me in business and organizational life.
However, during high school, I suffered a major injury to my right shoulder while playing American football. This forced me to reluctantly abandon my long-held dream of becoming a professional baseball player. It was the greatest setback of my life and a pivotal moment requiring me to redesign my future path. However, the time spent with the team was too precious to leave entirely, so I decided to stay on as a staff member recording statistics. This role was not merely about logging data; it was an important job that contributed to the team’s strategic direction and provided tangible support for its success. Thanks to this, I could continue to be part of the team while learning about the importance of roles and collaboration within an organization, as well as the power of numbers and data.
Although I gave up the path of an athlete, these experiences became a crucial foundation for who I am today. Above all, I learned firsthand the importance of the power of collaboration over going it alone, and the attitude of persevering and finding alternative ways forward. Those experiences from that time remain a valuable asset that continues to guide the direction of my life.
School Days and Work Experience
I majored in Business Administration at the University of ○○’s Toronto Campus. The curriculum there emphasized hands-on learning, and I chose Business Administration because I had a particular interest in accounting. Unfortunately, I had to cover my own tuition, so I spent four years balancing academics and work. Sometimes, the heavy workload and classes meant my grades didn’t meet expectations, but I focused less on grades and more on learning through diverse practical experiences and relationships with people.
My first job was at a specialty coffee shop. There, I met diverse people and gradually took on the role of a manager leading the team. It was an environment that prioritized customer service above all else, so there were many challenging moments, but it was a valuable time where I learned to think and communicate from the customer’s perspective. Initially, I was very shy and found it difficult to be in front of people, but I gradually adapted over time and eventually grew from a regular barista to a manager.
Later, leveraging my coffee shop experience, I took on sales duties at a hardware store. This role emphasized customer-level service and strategic approaches, requiring me to consider various variables impacting sales targets. To understand and satisfy customer needs, I focused on finding ways to offer appropriate pricing while maintaining high-quality products. This experience deeply instilled in me the importance of customer-centric thinking and market analysis.
After two years, I realized this field was somewhat distant from my desired career path. So, I shifted direction again and began working in the inventory room of a clothing store. There, I managed purchase orders and bills of lading, handling practical inventory management tasks. This experience, closely related to my major, allowed me to understand accounting, logistics, and supply chain flows, making it a particularly meaningful time for me.
Thus, throughout my student years, I didn’t just sit at a desk studying; I actively engaged in hands-on work, accumulating diverse experiences. Practical experience across various industries helped me grow into a more flexible and responsible person, serving as crucial nourishment that shaped who I am today.
Career History and Motivation for Applying
After graduating from
University, I obtained a TESL certificate and moved to Korea. This was because I had the opportunity to teach English. This decision became a valuable chance for me to develop independence and embrace a foreign culture. Korea was very different from Canada in many aspects, including culture and lifestyle. Fortunately, I had relatives and many friends in Korea. While the food was a bit unfamiliar, I adapted relatively smoothly otherwise.
When I first arrived in Korea, I taught English to students at a public school in the ○○ area. This period taught me how to work responsibly, and my parents’ constant encouragement and support were a great source of strength. Thanks to them, I could face new challenges with independence even in an unfamiliar environment.
After my contract with the public school ended, I decided to seriously learn Korean. So, in the fall of 20○○, I enrolled in the Language Education Center at ○○ University and began studying Korean. Having taken nearly a year off from studying, adapting wasn’t easy at first, but through consistent effort over the 30-week program, I completed up to the fourth level of Korean. University life in Seoul brought significant changes not only to my studies but also to my daily lifestyle and spending habits. I developed the ability to manage funds efficiently within a limited budget and to independently organize my life.
During this period, I joined a volunteer organization participating in various projects, such as orphanage visits. Currently, I serve as the Vice President of this organization, leading activities while maintaining ongoing communication with members. I find fulfillment in work that promotes the growth of organizations and people, and I participate consistently. Additionally, during a period without income, I worked as a part-time teacher at a municipal English school in ○○ City while living with relatives. This experience allowed me to maintain practical skills and served as an opportunity to renew my motivation for work. After concluding that role in
○ month, I now aim to build a full-fledged career in the relevant industry. Moving forward, I wish to contribute to the growth of ○○○○ Korea into a successful enterprise by leveraging my capabilities. I can actively apply the practical skills gained from diverse part-time jobs during university, along with my proficiency in software and office programs, to the role. Furthermore, having lived in both Korea and Canada, I am confident that my cultural understanding and diverse perspectives will enable me to contribute to your company’s growth as a well-rounded professional.
Thank you sincerely for reviewing my resume.
