How did childhood hospital experiences lead to choosing nursing as a major?

This blog post calmly examines how the moments of fear and comfort felt in hospitals during childhood became the foundation for choosing nursing as a major, tracing how that experience flowed into career path and goals.

Reasons for Choosing My Major

As a child, I absolutely hated getting shots. I dreaded going to the hospital, but the nurses would administer the painful injections while tenderly comforting me. Sometimes they’d even praise me for being a good patient and give me candy. In my young mind, it felt both heartbreaking and strangely satisfying and nice. Naturally, I often played hospital games, pretending to be a nurse. When my grandmother, who lived alone in the countryside, came to our house when she wasn’t feeling well, I would take care of her as if I were a nurse. Then, after watching the movie Patch Adams, I was deeply moved and firmly resolved to become a nurse.
While becoming a nurse is my immediate goal, my aspiration is to build knowledge in healthcare and nursing policy based on nursing experience, ultimately participating in administrative policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare. My memory of my grandmother, who lived alone in the countryside and was unwell, fuels my strong interest in healthcare policies for the elderly. Applying to nursing school is the first step toward my long-term dream.

Academic Plan During University and Post-Graduation Career Path

I believe adapting well to school life is the first priority. Since understanding my major subjects is paramount, I will dedicate myself to major studies during my first and second years. Concurrently, I plan to study healthcare and nursing policy, which will form the foundation for my goals. I will research and collect healthcare policies related to real life, seeking areas for improvement and better directions.
Furthermore, I will strive to build a solid foundation of nursing knowledge in preparation for the increased clinical practice starting in my third year. Once I enter my third year, I will gain extensive practical experience based on theoretical knowledge. Since nurses perform medical procedures directly, I believe practical experience is as important as theory. I will practice as much as possible to minimize mistakes when I eventually become a nurse.
Upon graduation, I will write a thesis on a specific topic related to healthcare and nursing policy, building upon the groundwork laid during my undergraduate studies. Although it will be an undergraduate thesis, I believe approaching it seriously will greatly benefit my future career goals.
After graduation, I will first gain experience as a nurse. While working under the Ministry of Health and Welfare to gain experience is my hope, gaining nursing experience is my priority. Once I have accumulated experience, I will pursue graduate studies to professionally research social welfare programs and nursing policy. If my efforts lead to policy development, I will strive to provide practical, beneficial healthcare services to the public. Currently, I believe that establishing a medical service where healthcare professionals are assigned to local community centers to regularly visit and care for vulnerable elderly individuals or young children could significantly contribute to improving public health more than current systems.
Personally, I also plan to volunteer whenever I can find the time. As someone trained in nursing, I believe it is essential to personally practice contributing to my community and society with whatever abilities I possess, no matter how small the act.
