What experiences should I focus on when writing my academic plan for the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting?

This blog post explores how to explain your motivation for applying to the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting by focusing on relevant experiences, and how to concretely present your academic plans during university and your career goals after graduation. We’ll also look at how to organize activities connected to the broadcasting and media field and your future vision.

Motivation for Pursuing the Major (Reason for Choosing the Major)

Having been glued to the TV since childhood, I have long dreamed of becoming a PD. I loved the feeling of being drawn into new worlds while watching TV, and I wished I could do that kind of work myself. During my first and second years of high school, I was active in the broadcasting club, where I was responsible for directing and filming videos submitted to the broadcasting festival.
During my time in the club, I had the opportunity to interview alumni like MBC PD ○○○, which helped me cultivate my own aspirations. While my peers were still pondering their career paths, I had no hesitation in applying to your university because I had always dreamed of becoming a PD, my childhood idol.
If admitted to your university, I will study diligently to become an expert in my chosen field. Among the programs I enjoy watching is a documentary called ○○○. This program instills the will and hope to pioneer the future through reflection on history. If I walk the path of a PD after graduating from your university, I aspire to direct outstanding documentary programs like this one, which leave a lasting impression.

Academic Plan and Goals

Upon admission to your university, I first wish to study my major in depth. Through this major, I will cultivate the skills necessary to become a PD. Concurrently, I will study by reading books in related fields to build knowledge about various societal issues. I will strive to accumulate knowledge across diverse areas, clip newspapers and news articles, and grasp emerging trends through economic and industry journals.
During my sophomore year, I will go abroad for language training to improve my English skills, learning alongside university students from around the world. In my third year, I will choose psychology as a minor to develop the ability to understand viewer psychology. In my fourth year, I will receive education and training at a broadcasting academy to become a PD. I will build a broad base of general knowledge and current affairs through newspapers and books. Throughout my undergraduate years, I will practice viewing all societal phenomena—including current affairs, culture, and music—through the eyes of a PD.

Plans after the Master’s Program

After graduation, I aspire to join a broadcasting station and become a producer for current affairs documentaries. While entertainment programs offer their own enjoyment, I feel a deeper affection for current affairs documentaries that can capture the world I envision with greater depth. As a station producer, I want to create meaningful programs that portray a world rich in humanity.
Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, rose from being the ‘best tailor’ in his youth to the ‘greatest statesman’ through relentless effort. I believe my current position and where I will stand in the future are not important. Only those who become the best at what they do now will be able to pursue their desired work later and become the best in that field as well. ‘Korea’s top producer’ is the image I always keep in my heart for myself 20 years from now.

Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)

I have applied the proverb ‘words become seeds’ in reverse. While it originally means that speaking ill brings misfortune, I thought that conversely, speaking well and expressing one’s desires could make them come true. I confidently shared my dreams with everyone I met and openly discussed my short-term plans and aspirations with friends and teachers. This led many people to provide me with valuable information, encouragement, and opportunities, becoming stepping stones that brought me closer to my goals. Remarkably, those words are now sprouting and growing.
I’m not the type to dwell excessively on my ‘worries’ or be easily swayed by others’ words. I’m decisive, make my own choices, and once I set my mind to something, I give it my all. Running steadily like this, I suddenly realized I’d made significant progress.
