After my math grades dropped significantly once during middle school, I developed a fear of the subject—to the point where I was afraid to even open a math workbook. Since I couldn’t afford to give up on math while preparing for college, I resolved to overcome this fear. First, I reflected on why I was afraid of math and realized that the pressure to perform well was the main cause. So, rather than obsessing over immediate test scores, I prioritized understanding the essence of math and regaining my interest in the subject. Instead of mindlessly solving a large number of problems, I focused on systematically organizing and understanding the principles and theories through a standard math textbook. As I repeatedly reviewed and memorized the basic concepts to build a solid foundation, I no longer felt intimidated by application problems or difficult questions; instead, I was able to approach them with ease. I believe my improved grades were not the result of mere memorization or quantitative study, but rather the result of overcoming my fear of math and adjusting my study methods to address the root cause. This experience taught me that an approach focused on “identifying and filling in gaps” is more effective than an attitude of “just doing it no matter what.” In college, I will continue to identify my own weaknesses, work to improve them, and strive to ensure that I never develop a fear of studying.
Extracurricular Activities: Robotics Club, Research, and Volunteer Work
Throughout high school, I was an active member of the robotics research club, maintaining a 100% attendance rate. In addition to regular meetings, I would gather with friends once a day to plan our research and work on programming and building projects. I was also proactive in participating in events hosted by various organizations to present and promote the club’s research findings. In particular, the cleaning robot I led the development of was the result of research aimed at creating a product that could be practically used in the home. Within the club’s open and collaborative atmosphere, I took the initiative in designing and building the robot, and whenever we encountered obstacles during the process, we would gather with our advisor and fellow club members to analyze the problems and find solutions together. Whenever I encountered difficulties during my research, I refused to give up and maintained a high level of focus until the problem was solved; as a result, my project was able to yield results relatively quickly within the club. Furthermore, the process of creating a fully functional robot by integrating mechanical design, electronic circuits, and programming through club activities was itself a major learning experience and a source of confidence.
Care, Sharing, and Cooperation: Experience in Volunteering My Skills for Local Children
Building on my experience in the robotics club, I also participated in volunteer teaching programs for low-income children in the local community. I explained the principles of robotics and simple construction processes, and spent time conducting hands-on activities with the children. I felt a great sense of fulfillment when I saw the children gradually become interested and focused. As time went on, requests from the children to help with schoolwork in addition to robotics increased, so I expanded my role to include not only robotics lessons but also academic tutoring, homework assistance, and guidance on previewing and reviewing material. When teaching, I made an effort to explain concepts at the children’s level, responded flexibly to their playful antics, and dealt firmly with disrespectful behavior to build trust. Most importantly, this was not simply an activity to earn volunteer credits; I taught with sincerity, continuously researching and refining the educational content so that the children would develop a genuine interest and continue learning on their own. I learned a great deal from the children’s attitude of not being ashamed of their shortcomings and making the most of the resources they had to learn; in fact, I gained even greater insights myself. This experience demonstrated that a relationship based on mutual sharing and learning is possible, and it strengthened my resolve to continue approaching volunteer work not as “giving,” but as “exchange and sharing.”
Motivation for Application and Academic/Career Plans After Enrollment
I aspire to become a professional leader in the 21st-century robotics market by studying at the Department of Robotics at Kwangwoon University, Korea’s first robotics department. Since robotics is a field that integrates mechanical engineering, electronics, communications, and software, I believe that building a solid foundation in basic theory is the top priority. In the undergraduate program, I will study not only mechanical components but also circuits, communications, and programming as a whole; however, I intend to focus particularly on deepening my programming skills to develop the ability to control robots and create application software. At the same time, I will strive to solve problems from a convergent perspective without neglecting the fundamentals of mechanical and electronic engineering. I plan to actively utilize the research platforms and development support provided by the university to participate in projects and competitions starting in my undergraduate years, with the goal of validating my skills through hands-on assignments. In the long term, I aspire to become a specialist who contributes to society by participating in robotics-related research and development or by developing practical and creative robots through related startups. I will continue my studies at the Department of Robotics at Kwangwoon University and do my best to create robots that benefit humanity and society.
