This blog post introduces how major-specific knowledge and practical experience as a business major can be strengths for purchasing roles, accompanied by a sample personal statement.
Growth Process
My parents run a small stationery shop next to a nearby middle school. As a child, I simply held the fort when my parents briefly left the store. However, as I grew older, I became increasingly interested in what items the students frequenting the stationery store preferred. I also began personally comparing and analyzing whether there were price differences with nearby stationery stores.
Upon entering university, I developed this interest more concretely. However, my parents wanted me to focus on my major studies, so initially, they were not entirely supportive of my research. Nevertheless, I persuaded them that this was a valuable opportunity to apply the knowledge I was learning as a business student, and that such analysis and experimentation could help improve store sales and management. Eventually, I gained my parents’ permission and ran the stationery store myself for a year.
During this period, I carefully observed which products customers were most interested in. Based on this, I worked to order the optimal products at the lowest possible cost through catalogs and the website. I particularly adjusted order quantities to match customer preferences, placing orders more strategically than my parents’ previous approach of simply selling whatever suppliers delivered. While the supplier’s owner occasionally expressed reluctance, citing the more demanding ordering process, I always maintained a bright and friendly demeanor to foster a smooth relationship.
I also naturally built rapport with customers, taking advance orders for items they needed and noting their specific preferences, like favorite characters or designs, to incorporate into our product selection. Thanks to these efforts, our stationery shop steadily gained more regular customers. While organizing goods daily, checking quantities, and analyzing customer preferences was a tedious and mentally taxing process, it simultaneously brought me great satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
Running the stationery shop made me realize that ‘preparing needed products at the right time’ aligns well with my aptitude. Though it was just ordering for a small stationery shop, this experience helped me discover my strengths and areas where I excel, becoming a crucial starting point for applying to your company today.
School Days
During my school days, while majoring in Business Administration, I particularly excelled in statistics. From a young age, I possessed a unique blend of both science and humanities inclinations—maintaining a humanistic sensibility while also excelling in analytical and mathematical thinking. Among my studies, statistics courses brought me particular joy. The process of conducting surveys myself, using statistical software to derive results, and then analyzing them was both clear and fascinating. Often praised for my strong analytical skills, I also gained significant part-time experience in related fields. During election seasons, I worked at polling agencies, surveying candidate approval ratings and analyzing data collected from questionnaires. The most critical aspect of this work was meticulous analysis to avoid statistical errors. Uncovering the meaning behind the numbers and identifying essential information within the data flow was the perfect task for someone like me, equipped with both humanities-based intuition and science-based logic. Building on this experience, I broadened my practical capabilities by participating in diverse research and analysis activities. I firmly believe these analytical and interpretive skills, along with a mathematical mindset, are essential qualities for a purchasing manager. Moving forward, I aim to grow as a professional who makes rational, data-driven judgments and strategic decisions based on these strengths.
Personality Strengths and Weaknesses
I possess a clear-cut personality. I believe this decisive nature has actually allowed me to build strong trust with many people. Blindly accepting requests can create difficult situations not only for myself but also for the person making the request. Therefore, I clearly distinguish between what I can and cannot do, and I honestly communicate those boundaries. This approach prevents the anxiety of having to scramble to fulfill promises I made to help. I am confident this clear-cut nature will be a significant advantage for a purchasing manager who must communicate directly with numerous clients and drive projects forward.
Furthermore, I am both meticulous and proactive in execution. Rather than just sitting at my desk pondering solutions, I prefer to get out and find answers myself. I believe the successful operation of my parents’ stationery store was due to thorough data analysis and hands-on market research. However, at times, my excessive modesty prevents me from fully showcasing my capabilities. My parents advise me to avoid excessive humility, saying, “Promoting your abilities to others is also part of your skill set.” Yet, I place greater value on achieving results that satisfy me personally than on working for others’ recognition or praise.
Motivation for Application and Aspirations
I believe that enjoying one’s work is the greatest driving force behind achieving the best results. Throughout my life, I have learned that no matter how urgent the situation, taking a step back to see the bigger picture, setting priorities, and handling tasks systematically is the only way to achieve efficient results. I have also deeply realized how important it is to approach tasks with a positive and proactive attitude and to take responsibility for one’s actions.
Upon joining the company, I will approach all tasks with a proactive learning mindset to deliver the best possible outcomes for assigned projects. I firmly believe that procuring materials essential for operations transcends mere supply chain management; it plays a pivotal role in strengthening the company’s competitiveness. If given the opportunity to handle this critical responsibility, I pledge to leverage my accumulated skills and dedication to achieve outstanding results. Furthermore, I commit to establishing myself as an indispensable asset to the organization, contributing to the company’s growth and advancement.
