Learning the A to Z of Textile Trade
After graduating from
University, my first job was at a trading company supplying fabrics. Working in the Sales Support Team, I handled a wide range of responsibilities including sales management and support tasks, from securing orders by company to managing production status, and handling unit pricing and cost-related duties. I also learned how to prepare shipping documents like PACKING and INVOICE, building a solid foundation in trade operations. This period allowed me to directly experience the entire trade process, including sales settlement and monthly settlement tasks by supplier. However, when the company headquarters relocated to Busan, I found it difficult to move my residence. Regrettably, I decided to change jobs.
My second workplace was a Japanese apparel exporter. Here, my scope of work expanded significantly, starting with supplying raw materials and components needed for production to our own factory located in China, and extending to settlement and payment management. I processed shipping documents, managed container bookings (FCL – 23 times per week, LCL – 12 times per week), and was responsible for all shipping documentation, including preparing PACKING LISTS and INVOICES, and issuing cotton certificates. Beyond B/L management, I also handled monthly settlements and payments with raw material suppliers and forwarding companies, gaining firsthand experience with every flow in the textile trade field. This period allowed me to grow beyond simple administrative support into a talent equipped with practical skills and an understanding of the entire trade process.
Dedicated to Japan Trade Operations
By my fourth year in the Trade Department, I felt something was missing as I neared the end of my university life. While I seriously considered graduate school, I was more drawn to broadening my practical experience and horizons in a new environment than to deepening my academic research. After much deliberation, I decided to study abroad in Japan. After obtaining JLPT N1 certification, I departed for Japan and spent three months intensively strengthening my language skills locally before enrollment. I then entered the Tokyo School of Business, majoring in Global Business. Judging that a four-year program would be too burdensome in terms of time and cost, I opted for a two-year program.
To elevate my Japanese proficiency to the desired level within a short timeframe while also acquiring broad major knowledge, I lived under a strict schedule from 6 AM to 9 PM daily. Though the schedule was demanding, balancing study, assignments, and local adaptation, the sense of accomplishment was immense. This period became a crucial foundation for my career and attitude.
After returning to Korea, I began my career in the overseas sales team of a chemical manufacturing company. I handled all aspects of trade administration, with primary responsibilities including researching overseas market trends and developing and managing international suppliers. Particularly due to the nature of importing raw materials, it was crucial to continuously monitor the production status of raw material suppliers and analyze basic petrochemical industry trends. As my experience grew, I took charge of overseeing the procurement of Japanese-made foreign capital goods, managing the entire process including negotiations with suppliers, contract management, and logistics coordination. As my first job, every task was new and fascinating, and I enjoyed the process of learning and growing step by step. Particularly with import/export documents, even a single digit error could drastically alter the amount, so I always meticulously reviewed paperwork to prevent minor mistakes. This experience solidified my work habits and sense of responsibility.
The Answer to Growth Found in the Field
I worked for ○ years in a management role at a large retail chain. My primary responsibility was the overall management of tenant onboarding. At first glance, it might seem like simply bringing in brands and managing them, but in reality, it’s an area that cannot be properly executed without a deep understanding of the entire distribution structure, the real estate market, and the brands being onboarded.
Initially, I too focused solely on managing the brands in the stores. However, over time, I came to realize that staying stagnant, like stagnant water, made it difficult to achieve results beyond the target or generate new revenue. From then on, I prioritized spending more time in the stores than in the office, focusing on directly experiencing the flow and changes on the ground.
By frequently visiting the field like this, I was able to vividly hear the ‘real voices’ that could never be heard from behind a desk. Based on these experiences, I began to deeply examine the rationale and context behind my assigned tasks, as well as the root causes of emerging issues. By approaching problems not just by managing outcomes, but by understanding their causes and background, I strengthened bonds with department heads. Consequently, the performance of my assigned area and my internal evaluations improved significantly.
Looking back, the answers I could never have found from desk-bound data were right there on the front lines. The process of directly engaging, observing, and building relationships was the greatest driving force behind my professional growth. I intend to continue developing without losing sight of this perspective.
From Factory to Logistics Center: My Growth Story
I started working while attending university and currently serve as a manager in the logistics industry. I began working in a factory immediately after graduating high school, and it was thanks to the factory owner’s consideration that I could pursue a degree in business administration. This allowed me to balance university life with work, and looking back, I consider it an incredibly valuable experience in my life. Juggling both responsibilities at once was new to me, and it felt overwhelming at times. Yet, I approached each day with the determination to handle both my studies and my job responsibly.
Above all, the greatest advantage was not just learning theory at a desk, but being able to immediately apply what I learned in practical work. I could review and verify theories learned in class by immediately applying them on the job, making the content feel much more vivid. After four intense years, I graduated and was promptly selected as a manager at the factory where I worked. While the core tasks didn’t change drastically after becoming a manager, I took direct responsibility for the factory’s overall operations, managed inventory control, and even handled employee training. Successfully fulfilling these roles and receiving praise for doing an excellent job brought me immense satisfaction.
Of course, there were moments of friction with people while working. However, I learned a great deal from those experiences, and they became opportunities for my own growth. Later, the CEO established a logistics center to handle both wholesale and retail operations alongside the factory, and he entrusted me with setting up its operational framework. Building on the experience and systems I gained at the factory, I established the logistics center’s framework. Beyond managing incoming and outgoing shipments, I personally handled everything from discovering new clients through sales representatives to overseeing deliveries and post-delivery inspections.
Especially during the center’s early days, my biggest challenge was figuring out how to create an efficient system. To fill in gaps, I even took graduate-level classes nearby, developing both my theoretical knowledge and practical skills. After five years of dedicated effort, the center now operates stably, and I feel deep satisfaction with these results. These were years where I made the most of the opportunities given to me, and this experience fuels my ongoing determination to keep moving forward in a better direction.
A talent with practical experience and expertise in distribution marketing
I majored in Business Administration in college, growing into a well-rounded professional with both practical experience and marketing theory. I obtained my Computerized Accounting certification early in my first year, recognizing its strong relevance to my major. As I progressed through my studies, my interest in marketing deepened. I also developed a keen interest in public relations, broadening my academic horizons by taking PR-related courses offered by the Journalism and Broadcasting Department. This process provided invaluable insight, reaffirming not only the overall flow of business management but also the crucial role marketing and PR play in the exchange of goods and services.
During my university years, I completed every marketing-related course offered, including Modern Corporate Management, Principles of Economics, Marketing Research Methodology, Marketing Strategy, Consumer Behavior, Brand Marketing, Marketing Communication, and Global Marketing. My high level of interest translated into strong academic achievement; I never missed out on a scholarship during my eight semesters.
During my studies, I worked part-time at a GS25 convenience store, gaining the opportunity to apply theories learned in school to real-world situations. Balancing school and work was challenging, but through night shifts, I experienced various practical tasks like product display and sales trend analysis. Notably, I implemented a strategy to boost sales by placing trending products in highly visible locations, increasing revenue by over 15%. This achievement earned me the trust and recognition of the store owner, who was satisfied with my accurate and diligent work. This experience taught me that in an organizational setting, fulfilling one’s role and maintaining a respectful attitude towards others is paramount.
After graduation, I briefly considered continuing my studies but decided gaining work experience first was necessary, leading me to join the PR team at a trading company. As the youngest member of the PR team, I handled the promotion for the new walking shoe launched in 2020. While supporting my seniors’ work, I also took on tasks like data research, writing market analysis reports, participating in PR strategy meetings, and taking meeting minutes, gaining hands-on experience with the entire workflow. Overtime and weekend work continued until the product launch, but the learning and sense of accomplishment gained during that process became invaluable assets. Most importantly, through hands-on experience, I clearly identified the field I wanted to study more deeply. Accordingly, in my second year of practical work, I prepared for graduate school admissions and advanced to study Distribution Marketing.
No matter how outstanding a product is, it cannot lead to sales if consumers are unaware of it. Marketing is a core activity that goes beyond simple promotion, effectively connecting products with consumers to ensure smooth supply and consumption. Sometimes, strategies to stimulate consumer interest are needed; other times, a differentiated premium strategy is required. Through specialized graduate studies in distribution marketing, I developed the ability to formulate marketing strategies that bridge theory and practice, and cultivated the capability to execute these in real-world settings. Moving forward, I will continue to organically combine practical experience and theory within the changing market environment to grow as a professional who delivers successful marketing outcomes.
Expanding the International Stage with Trade Practice and Multilingual Capabilities
I possess practical trade experience. Having long harbored a dream of working internationally, I determined that the trade industry would suit me well and majored in International Trade at university. After graduation, I worked in the trade field, handling various trade documentation and translation tasks. Due to the nature of the work, I frequently interacted not only with English-speaking countries but also with many Asian nations. Through this process, I naturally recognized the need to learn additional languages.
I believed that mastering the languages of China and Japan, countries with which Korea has active exchanges, would significantly enhance my practical skills. Therefore, I consistently studied Chinese and Japanese while balancing my work life. While balancing work and study was certainly challenging, I efficiently managed my time through diligence and dedication. This approach greatly aided my language acquisition, ultimately enabling me to proficiently handle not only English but also the translation and drafting of Chinese and Japanese documents.
This practical experience gained in the trade field and my multilingual capabilities have instilled in me more than just professional competence; they have given me the confidence to communicate and collaborate smoothly across diverse nations and cultures. Moving forward, I aim to leverage these experiences and abilities to operate on a broader international stage and continue growing.
Experience working in various retail stores
I have experience working in various retail stores. While studying business administration at a four-year university, my ambition to contribute across various sectors of society grew stronger. Leveraging my youthful stamina and outgoing personality, I sought to experience different roles and challenges one by one. One such opportunity was working at a women’s apparel management store in a department store, which I applied for during my university years. The women’s apparel store was constantly bustling with customers throughout the day, and the tasks required were quite numerous. During promotional events, I exerted myself moving merchandise and rearranging displays. During sales periods, I stood at the counter conducting promotional activities myself.
When I first took charge of a promotion, I felt unfamiliar and awkward, even shrinking back. Standing alone in the middle of the large store, loudly announcing the sale details, felt embarrassing at first. However, seeing customers drawn by my voice approach one or two at a time to ask about products gradually made me feel a sense of fulfillment. While simply standing at the counter greeting customers who came in was somewhat monotonous, actively promoting and selling items gave me a sense of accomplishment, as if my efforts had succeeded in marketing. After that, wanting to feel this fulfillment more deeply, I became more proactive in promotions and poured my passion into store management as well.
After graduating from university, I gained substantial experience in retail operations working at fashion retailers like UNIQLO. Managing inventory and handling orders gave me a deep understanding of the operational flow. After working as a full-time employee for over six months, I was promoted to assistant store manager. In this role, I efficiently managed inventory through communication with headquarters, earning recognition for my capabilities. Later, I joined a food distribution company within the Shinsegae Group, where I was responsible for managing sales staff and overseeing sales performance. My sales management skills were particularly strengthened by the know-how gained during my university years and previous part-time work, enabling me to adapt quickly.
These diverse retail experiences provided invaluable time to build practical skills across the entire distribution sector—beyond basic sales techniques—including customer service, inventory management, team operations, and marketing. Moving forward, I aim to leverage this experience to demonstrate my expertise on a broader stage and evolve into a continuously growing distribution specialist.
From Developer to Trade Specialist: The Start of a New Challenge
After handling trade operations at a software development company, I naturally transitioned into a software development role post-graduation by preparing my portfolio. However, shortly after joining, I received a new proposal from the HR manager. While I was well-suited for the development field, they suggested that, considering my personality and potential, working in the trade sector based on specialized knowledge might be a better fit. At the time, I had no prior experience in trade, but I decided to embrace this new challenge. From then on, I learned trade operations step by step. During this process, leveraging the knowledge from my university major, I was first assigned to handle communication tasks with clients.
My primary responsibilities involved leveraging my knowledge of multimedia equipment, hardware, software development programs, and comprehensive development services to communicate effectively with clients. Many of the existing trade staff members majored in economics or trade, but often struggled in technical discussions due to a lack of specialized technical knowledge. In contrast, my technical understanding allowed me to accurately grasp client requirements and respond effectively, earning me positive evaluations from the company.
Subsequently, I progressed beyond basic communication tasks to handle order processing based on demand forecasting and supply contracts. I also collaborated with existing staff to participate in cost calculations and strategic planning. This enabled me to manage projects from a long-term perspective rather than focusing solely on one-off transactions, contributing to improved company profitability and stable business relationships. This experience deepened my understanding of the importance of cross-departmental collaboration and synergy creation, extending beyond mere task execution.
Looking back, while trade operations initially felt unfamiliar and daunting, the convergence of my expertise in development and the practical experience gained on the ground created greater value. This experience, gained by challenging myself in a new field, will remain a crucial asset in my career. It also taught me firsthand how vital it is to embrace change and learning without fear.
Navigating Challenging Logistics with China Through Trust
Logistics operations with China were never easy. While laws and regulations existed, not everything proceeded smoothly within those frameworks. Sometimes, long-standing practices took precedence over laws and rules, and unexpected variables often dictated the situation. For instance, shipments sent from Korea would sometimes be delayed for no apparent reason. From the company’s perspective, situations where laws and rules didn’t apply were inevitably perplexing.
To resolve this issue, I decided to travel to China myself to meet with the responsible personnel. Although I managed to make contact with difficulty, I discovered the cause of the shipping delays stemmed from a misunderstanding by China’s top executive. Meeting the responsible personnel was challenging, but even more difficult was resolving the misunderstanding. However, I held the belief that ‘sincerity prevails.’ I conveyed the company’s position honestly and calmly, expressing my earnest desire to maintain a long-term relationship with China.
I also met with Koreans working locally in China to verify step by step where the misunderstanding had originated and collaboratively explore ways to resolve the conflict. Through this process, I once again deeply realized the value of ‘trust’. Ultimately, our sincere dialogue and mutual willingness to resolve the issue were conveyed, and we shared the conviction that this incident could actually build even stronger trust. The situation was successfully resolved, and several subsequent transactions followed without any further unnecessary misunderstandings.
Looking back, our company’s consistent prioritization of trust was the greatest strength in resolving this issue. It reaffirmed that sometimes, the trust between people can be a far more powerful solution than rules or contracts. And that trust is precisely the most reliable asset that will sustain all future transactions and relationships.
International Experience, Trade Company Exhibition Management Experience, Accounting Experience
After entering university, I gained valuable international experience studying in the United States through an exchange student program, which was part of the school curriculum. This period had a profound impact on my entire life and significantly broadened my interest in the international community. After completing my time in the US, I naturally began developing an interest in the trade field. During this time, my overseas experience and capabilities were recognized by the exhibition management team of a trading company, leading to an opportunity to work as an intern.
During my internship, I handled the recruitment and management of domestic exhibition-related companies, served as the team’s general affairs and administrative officer, and was responsible for budget management and simple accounting tasks. Though I felt both apprehension and anticipation toward these new responsibilities, I grew by learning step by step. Particularly through accounting and administrative tasks, I mastered systematic and meticulous document organization. As an administrative support, I cultivated inclusiveness and consideration within the team by ensuring members could perform their duties smoothly.
Furthermore, while managing companies and assisting with exhibitions, I honed practical communication skills through frequent interactions with various external organizations. Thanks to these efforts and achievements, I was recognized by my team members as a responsible and trustworthy individual, allowing me to conclude my internship period with great satisfaction. I am confident this experience will not only greatly aid in forming harmonious interpersonal relationships in my future career but will also serve as a crucial foundation for enhancing my work performance capabilities.
