How can I connect my childhood love of machines to my motivation for applying to the automotive, shipbuilding, and steel industries?

In this blog post, I’ll share how to naturally convey your genuine passion and job suitability for the automotive, shipbuilding, and steel industries in your application essay, based on my experience growing up with a deep interest in machinery.

My Growth Journey

As a child, I was often consumed by self-doubt, wondering if I would become meaningless if I didn’t become the center of attention. My older brother, who stood out from a young age, was my parents’ pride and joy. Naturally, they expected me to excel academically as well. However, I realized early on that I simply couldn’t meet those expectations. Unlike friends who were welcomed home with open arms just for achieving average grades, I constantly had to scrape by, barely meeting the high standards my brother had already set. When I did manage to meet those expectations, my parents would simply offer a matter-of-fact “Good job.” Feeling the disappointment hidden within that response, I was overwhelmed by a sense of loss, as if all my effort went unrecognized and meaningless.
Back then, I firmly believed that if I couldn’t climb higher than others or stand in the spotlight, my value as a person was just average. Watching my brother, who always shone with his innate talent, I felt pure envy mixed with regret—wondering if I could have earned my parents’ praise had I not been compared to him. In this environment, I gradually found it harder to love myself, and my attitude toward life began drifting toward apathy and resignation. The thought that no matter how hard I tried, my efforts wouldn’t reach my parents made the very reason for striving so hard seem blurred. Sometimes, I even deliberately put myself in difficult situations just to get their attention.
Looking back now, those feelings might seem like the tantrums of an immature child, but back then, I desperately wanted to find meaning in my existence, even through such means. It was a time when I desperately needed the belief that it was okay not to be perfect, the certainty that I could live at my own pace, not by comparison. This experience left me wounded, but simultaneously, it made me realize how crucial it is to determine the direction of my own life, rather than living to meet someone else’s expectations. As I moved past that time, I gradually began to cultivate the thought that ‘I am precious just as I am,’ instead of the rigid belief that ‘I must do well to be loved.’

School Life

Without special talents or outstanding achievements like my brother, I went through a period of frustration with my own life, wandering for a while, wondering ‘What path should I take?’ My parents’ expectations and plans were also based on the assumption that I would achieve academic results similar to my brother’s. Rather than forcing myself to meet that standard, I had to create a life plan that aligned with my own abilities and reality. During my high school years, when I was deeply troubled by life’s uncertainties, a mentor I often consulted shared words that resonated profoundly with me. “Every person is a part within the vast machinery of the world, and what role one will play within that machinery depends entirely on one’s own efforts.” He said it was foolish for parts with inherently different functions to strive to resemble each other, and that it was crucial for us to find the position that suited each of us. Moreover, he emphasized that humans can never become complete solely through their own strength. Therefore, the essential quality is the humility to acknowledge one’s limitations and the willingness to accept others’ help to move forward together. Even those who appear to stand at the center of the world reached that position through the help and support of countless others. Our society has built and developed its civilization thus far through such close solidarity and cooperation. Ultimately, just as even basic necessities like food, clothing, and shelter cannot be secured alone in modern society, the various challenges I will face upon entering society can only be overcome through connection and cooperation with others. This message resonated deeply within me. In my worldview, which had held that ‘unless one possesses special talent from the start, nothing matters,’ a light of hope was lit for the first time that day. That light still burns within me today, guiding me so I never lose my way.

Personality Introduction

I am someone who takes pride in my abilities and achievements, always striving to maintain confidence. In my youth, overshadowed by my brother’s overwhelming talent, I experienced deep frustration, wondering, ‘Am I truly a worthless person?’ However, as time passed, I came to understand that everyone has limitations and weaknesses, and that no one is perfect. Furthermore, after hearing that even those who lead as central figures within an organization ultimately perform their roles through the collaboration and support of many others, I resolved to find a position befitting my abilities and capabilities and to fulfill a meaningful role.
Just as a single part, left isolated and abandoned, possesses no power, but once it finds its place within a machine and fulfills its function, it plays a decisive role in the entire system’s flow, I too wanted to become someone who could quietly fulfill the calling given to me within the organism of society. That mindset remains a crucial foundation of my character to this day, and it has become the strength that keeps me steady even in moments when I find myself comparing myself to others. The belief that ‘we each have our own path to walk, and the place assigned to me is surely prepared separately’ has always lifted me up whenever I fell into despair. Although the weight of each person’s assigned task may differ, I believe everyone’s role is equally important because ultimately, the whole can only function properly when we all contribute our strength towards a single purpose.

View on Life

I believe everyone bears responsibilities and duties befitting their own life. For us to live, diverse conditions and systems must harmonize, and accordingly, the roles we must shoulder are invariably given in varied, non-standardized ways. While seeing others fulfill their roles diligently can be motivating, comparing yourself directly to them and becoming discouraged is not a wise attitude. Just as a screw cannot envy the role of a bolt or nut and take its place, every component has its own function and purpose, and each has the duty to support the whole from its assigned position.
This perspective allowed me to naturally accept that I might live at a slower pace or differently than others. Thanks to this, I could prepare for the future at my own speed and in my own way, with confidence rather than impatience becoming my driving force. Freeing myself from the compulsion that I “must be ahead of others” or “must be more outstanding” actually made life more flexible and gave me the space to calmly shape my own path.
Today, I believe that accepting myself as I am and respecting the unique weight each life carries is the first step toward going further.

Motivation for Application and Aspirations After Joining

Standing at the center, drawing everyone’s attention, and bearing immense responsibility is not the only path to success. The realization that no one can be complete as a solitary, unique being, and that one can only fully unleash their potential by joining forces with others, led me to reflect on life as a ‘part’ that enables me to do my best in my assigned position. This awareness steered me in a more positive direction and made me reconsider how valuable the sense of accomplishment felt within my role and place truly is.
While I once felt regret at being merely an ordinary member of a group, accepting that humans are inherently social beings who live by influencing and being influenced by others sparked a desire to give my utmost to the calling I’ve been given. The belief that individuals can grow through the process of advancing together toward a common goal, even if each person’s position is different, has become the driving force that keeps me striving.
I understand your company possesses a corporate culture that clearly recognizes the roles and responsibilities of each department within the larger organism of the company, while respecting the individuality and position of each ‘part.’ This goes beyond merely acknowledging the individuality of each member; it deeply impressed me that the company spares no effort in providing diverse support so that everyone can feel a sense of accomplishment and grow in their respective roles. I believe this is a company that cares for all members to enjoy the joy of self-development while simultaneously advancing toward the shared goal of corporate growth. Naturally, this sparked my desire to be part of this place.
As a member of your company, I intend to fully utilize my capabilities, fulfill my responsibilities, and pursue continuous growth. I will strive to be someone who remains dedicated to their role while constantly creating new value. I sincerely look forward to the future we will build together and hope to achieve meaningful results within it. Thank you.
